Tues Jan 23

Hello again from Johannesburg in South Africa where yesterday there was a meeting of representatives of several families of prisoners in HK ... attended by a special media friend whose work, please God, will save other families from going through the terrible experience of someone locked up in a far away foreign prison.

On Day 28 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip.

Job 15-17: Eliphaz then said that Job's own words condemned him ince he was in fact challenging God. Job replied that he was sick and tired of listening to his friends' speeches.  He also said he felt death was not far away: "My breath grows weak, I am ridiculed by everyone, every fiber of my heart is broken.  I have no hope."
Lord, help of the helpless, please help people who feel their situation is hopeless

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Acts 20.17-21: Paul's journey took him to Meletus where he met the elders of the church from Ephesus. He said to them "You know what my way of life has been from the first day I arrived among you. I have served the Lord in all humility, facing all the sorrows and trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you. I have preached to you and instructed you, both in public and in your homes, urging everyone to believe in our Lord Jesus".
Jesus, please help me be a bit more like Saint Paul

Listen

Luke 19.1-9: In Jericho there was a wealthy man named Zacchaeus, a senior tax collector. He wanted to see what kind of person Jesus was. But because of his short stature he couldn't see over the crowd. So he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him up the tree and said "Zacchaeus, come down, because I will stay at your house today". Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus warmly. People complained "He's gone to stay at the house of an outcast". Zacchaeus replied "Sir, I am going to give half of my property to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I'll pay them back fourfold". Jesus said to him "Today salvation has come to this house"
Jesus, please help more people to want to know and love you

Job 11-14: Zophar then said that Job must still have some secret sins of which he had not repented. Job sarcastically replied: "No doubt you are the voice of the people and when you die, wisdom will die with you. I am only too aware that God knows everything. How could I hide anything from him? God, why do you hide your face? Why do you look on me as an enemy?"
Dear God, please give us trust and courage in time of trial

My recording of this reading

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Acts 20.7-12: In the city of Troas Paul and his group joined the local believers for the Breaking of Bread one Saturday night. Paul's sermon went on till the middle of the night. As Paul went on and on, a young man who was sitting on the window-sill, went to sleep and fell to the ground three floors below. He was dead when they picked him up. Paul went down to the boy and prayed over him. The boy came back to life. Paul kept on talking till dawn. That same day he left Troas

Luke 18.35-43: As Jesus entered Jericho, there was a blind beggar sitting by the road. People in the crowd told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. So he called out "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me". Some people told him to be quiet, but he just shouted all the louder "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and asked him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Sir, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you". Instantly his sight returned, and he followed Jesus, praising God

Sun Jan 21

Hello from Johannesburg in South Africa where I arrived yesterday afternoon from Zimbabwe. I had only 24 hours in Zimbabwe and it was my first visit to the country ... but a very special 24 hours in which I attended a most important meeting and met family members of prisoners in HK ... and also met my O.M.I. colleague Fr Sholto Douglas who works in Zimbabwe ... and is from Brisbane! Today I'm due to attend a gathering of family members here in Johannesburg.

On Day 26 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip.

c.f. readings for Sunday 3 (Word of God Sunday)

Jonah 2-4: God arranged for a big fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the fish for 3 days. Inside the fish, Jonah prayed to God for help. God heard Jonah's prayer and got the fish to vomit Jonah on the shore. Again God told Jonah to preach repentance in Nineveh. This time Jonah did as God requested. "Forty days and Nineveh will be destroyed" he proclaimed. The people of Nineveh believed God's message. They put on sackcloth and ashes. They fasted and prayed. They repented of their evil behavior. God saw their change of heart and spared Nineveh. Jonah complained to God: "Your change of mind will cause me a big loss of face." God said to Jonah: "Do I not have the right to show compassion to my people?"
Lord, please help me repent of bad behavior
My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

1 Corinthians 7.29-31:  Our time is growing short. Those who have wives should live as though they had none, and those who mourn should live as though they had nothing to mourn for; those who are enjoying life should live as though there were nothing to laugh about; those whose life is buying things should live as though they had nothing of their own; and those who have to deal with the world should not become engrossed in it. I say this because the world as we know it is passing away.

Mark 1.14-20: Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good News from God. "The time has come" he said "and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News." As he was walking along by the sea of Galilee, he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew.  Jesus said to them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".  Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus. Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother John. He called them also to follow him.  They left their nets and boat and followed him.
Jesus, please bless all the people who work full time as "fishers of men"

Hello again from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania where yesterday afternoon there was a new world record (for me) for a  gathering of former prisoners in HK - 21! - quite a number of whom were interviewed by two journalists who joined us from 1pm to 4pm. Please God the gathering will encourage the group to avoid old problems and help some of them find a job through media publicity.

Yesterday I received news from Kenya that six women will soon be released from Langata after I left a donation there last week to pay for their fines ....which they could not afford.

This morning I am due to go to another country .... and on Day 24 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip.

Job 8-10: Bildad then spoke of God's justice and the fate of people who forget God. Job agreed and said how God was sole creator and judge of the world: He and no other stretched out the skies. The Bear, Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South - all were made by him. "Challenging God is unthinkable. Yet I know I am innocent and I'm being punished unjustly. I also know that God knows I'm innocent. So why am I being punished?  This is my question."
Dear God, please save us in time of trial

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Acts 19.23 - 20.1: In Ephesus there was a silversmith who employed many craftsmen making shrines of the local idol, Diana. The silversmith called a meeting of the city's silversmiths and said to them "Not just here in Ephesus, but in many parts of the region, this man Paul has converted many people with his argument that gods made by hand are not gods at all. This is a threat to our trade". A mob was formed and dragged two of Paul's companions to a local theatre. The town clerk eventually calmed the mob and dismissed them. By now Paul had decided to leave Ephesus. He went to Greece and spent three months there

On the third day I will rise from the dead". But the apostles had no idea what his words meant

Job 3-7: Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been born. He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My suffering doesn't let me rest." Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he loves. Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being punished? He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'  During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.'
Neither day nor night offers me any relief from my suffering."

Hello from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania where I arrived early yesterday morning after a 65 minute flight from Nairobi in Kenya. Yesterday afternoon I visited the shoe shop of a local man who spent 9 years in prison in HK ....thanks to HK friends I was able, about six months ago, to help him start his business. In today's economic climate in Africa, employment/income is a huge problem. Today I'm due to meet with a number of former HK prisoners.

Job 2: Satan asked permission from God to test Job even further. God gave permission. Satan struck Job with sores and ulcers from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Job scraped himself with a piece of pot. His wife told him to curse God and die. But Job replied "If we take happiness from God's hand, must we not take
sorrow too?" News of Job's situation reached three of his friends: Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar and they decided to visit Job. When they drew near to Job, they did not recognize him. They wept, tore their clothes and sat on the ground beside Job for 7 days without speaking, stunned and saddened by Job's appearance.

Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Job 1: Job lived in Southern Israel. He had 7 sons and 3 daughters. He owned thousands of animals.  He loved God and was a good man. Satan, one of the fallen angels, challenged God to let Job be put to the test. God gave permission to Satan to test Job. On the same day, all Job's animals were captured by raiders, and all his children died in a storm. Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, bowed to the ground and prayed: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shall return to the womb of the earth. The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back. Blessed be the name of the Lord."
Dear God, please give us courage and faith when life is difficult

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Acts 19.1-7: Paul left Corinth and went to the city of Ephesus where he found a dozen men who had been baptized by John the Baptist. He asked them "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?" They replied "We have not been taught about the Holy Spirit". When Paul explained Jesus to them, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Paul then prayed with them using the laying on of hands, and the Holy Spirit came down on them. They began to speak in tongues and to prophesy
Holy Spirit, please fall afresh on me and increase your influence in my life

Luke 18.9-14: Some people prided themselves on being virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story: Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a religious leader, the other a social outcast. The leader stood there and said "I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people such as this outcast here". The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner". The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled. People who humble themselves will be exalted
Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner

Hello again from Nairobi in Kenya where yesterday morning I joined a Mass at Langata Women's Prison where I had been several times in the past.  From mid-day to early evening I took part in a gathering for former prisoners and families of present prisoners ... we were around 20 people ... a most memorable experience.

Today on Day 20 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip

The Book Blog:
readings + recordings
Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Maccabees 15: In 138 B.C., Antiochus son of Demetrius made war with Trypho. This same Antiochus became hostile to Simon  after the Romans renewed their treaty with Israel. When Antiochus sent an army to attack Israel, Simon defeated that army. A disloyal and ambitious Jew named Ptolemy got Simon and two of his sons drunk at a banquet and killed them. Simon was succeeded by his son John as leader of the Jews.
Dear God,  please protect good leaders from disloyalty

My recording of this reading

Psalm 94: O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul. O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul.
Lord, when cares and troubles increase, please help us to trust in you

Listen

Acts 18.5-11In Corinth, Paul was rejected by the Jews, so he spent his time preaching to non-Jewish people. Many Corinthians became believers and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: "Do not be afraid to speak out, nor allow yourself to be silenced. I am with you". So Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months preaching the word of God
Jesus, give Christians more courage to speak your message

Listen

Luke 18.1-7: Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart: There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death". Even more so God will  see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

Listen

Reflection: God will give us anything that is good for us, but sometimes, like a wise parent, will delay things because the time is not right etc.
