Imitating Pope Francis

Tues Jan 30

Hello again from Sao Paulo in Brazil where yesterday I attended two most important meetings in the morning and early afternoon. Then when having an evening meal at a restaurant near my hotel, a waiter (aged c, 25) said "my foot got better after you prayed for me last year". One year ago I went to that restaurant with a group of families of prisoners in HK ... the man's foot had been really painful for a long time  ...he said he felt like he was walking on broken glass ... but after prayer the pain went away. Thank you Jesus! After the restaurant meal a kind friend helped me buy and deliver drinks and food for 8 homeless people in a park near my hotel .... with one man saying he also remembers me from last year!

On Day 35 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip.

Job 25-31: Bildad then reminded Job that God's power is beyond human understanding.  No one should question God's actions. Job replied: "I swear by God who denies me justice that as long as I have breath, I will live a life of innocence. I remember how I have always lived as a friend of God: how I helped the poor, the orphan, the dying, the widow, the blind, the lame. I remember how I made a pact with my eyes not to linger on any other woman but my wife. I remember how I have never put my trust in riches or fame. I have always trusted only in the Lord. Yet now people laugh at me and make fun of me. They avoid me and even spit on me. When will God answer me?"
Dear God, please help me to imitate Job's way of life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Acts 21.15-40: In Jerusalem Paul gave a report to James and other Christian leaders of all that God had done for non-Jews through his ministry. But Paul was soon seen by Jews from where he had traveled. He was dragged out of the Temple and beaten by a wild crowd. The beating was stopped by a Roman captain who had Paul bound with chains. The crowd was calling out for Paul to be killed. Paul asked for permission to speak to the crowd and the captain agreed. Paul then spoke to the crowd in Hebrew
Jesus, please protect Christians who live in dangerous places

Luke 21.3-38: Jesus said to his disciples that Jerusalem would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout the world. He also spoke of how his followers would be persecuted,  and of the end of the world: "The planets will be shaken, nations will be in agony,  bewildered by the force of the oceans. Then they will see me coming in a cloud with great power and glory. To prepare for your own end of earthly life, stay faithful to prayer and goodness. Don't let your heart be coarsened by debauchery, drunkenness and material cares". In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent the daytime in the Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would gather round him to listen to him. Then he would spend the night on the Mount of Olives
Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer and goodness

Mon Jan 29

Hello again from Sao Paulo in Brazil where yesterday I had some interesting experiences:
* I spent time on a video call with a lawyer in India trying to help a man in prison in HK after being set up on a charge of drug trafficking.
* As I went for a midday walk to the local church I noticed how virtually every shop and business was closed ... No Sunday trading here.... and I thought to myself "thank Goodness the church will be open" ... only to find the church also was closed!
* I went for a swim in the hotel pool and ... in the pool ....met a famous retired journalist who is now going to help with publicity for my anti-drug campaign!

On Day 34 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip.

Yesterday I watched the whole of this talk by the late Fr Donald Cozzens about the future of the Church. Introduction is very long, but when Fr Donald starts speaking you will be surprised by some of the things he says ....married popes .....women deacons ....women cardinals!

Job 22-24: Eliphaz then said that God was punishing Job because justice demanded that Job be punished for his sins. Job replied: "I know that God sees everyone and everything. God sees every step I take. But I cannot contact him. He has filled my life with sadness and fear and yet he doesn't answer my prayer."
Dear God, in times of darkness, with Jesus we pray "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Acts 21.1-14: Our sea voyage took us to the city of Caesarea. A prophet there took Paul's belt and used it to tie up his own feet and hands, as a sign of what would happen to Paul in Jerusalem. Everyone implored Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Paul replied "I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus". And so we packed up and headed for Jerusalem
Jesus, please give me a bit of Paul's courage

Luke 20.45-47: After some  leaders had asked him some trick questions, Jesus said to his disciples "Beware of the religious leaders who like to walk about in special clothes and love to be greeted obsequiously in the market places. They like the front seats in prayer halls and the places of honor at banquets. They like making a show of lengthy prayers. But at the same time they steal the property of widows. They will receive a severe sentence from God at the end of their lives

Hello from Sao Paulo in Brazil where yesterday I caught up on much "office" work that needed doing after recent visits to many African countries ... and also had a long walk in the area near my hotel as I waited for a local shop to take care of my laundry.

Deuteronomy 18:15-20: The Lord said to Moses "I will raise up a prophet like yourself for them from their own brothers; I will put my words into his mouth and he shall tell them all I command him. The man who does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name, shall be held answerable to me for it. But the prophet who presumes to say in my name a thing I have not commanded him to say, that prophet shall die"
Lord, please protect our world from people who preach violence in your name

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God, and we are the people who belong to his pasture. Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Mark 1.21-28: Jesus and the fishermen went to the town of Capernaum. On the Sabbath Jesus began to teach in the local  prayer hall. The listeners were deeply impressed by Jesus' teaching. Unlike the religious leaders, Jesus taught with authority. That very day in the prayer hall there was a man possessed by an evil spirit.  The spirit shouted out "Have you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth?  I know who you are: the Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out of him!" The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out of him. The people in the prayer hall were amazed. They said "Here is a teaching which has authority. Even evil spirits obey him." Jesus' reputation quickly spread throughout the whole district
Jesus, Holy One of God, please protect my family from evil

Job 20-21: Zophar then said it was unreasonable for Job to think that his situation was an exception as regards God's justice. Job replied: "I can't help asking why do wicked people prosper while good people suffer?"
Dear God, please help us to understand the mystery of good and evil

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.
Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Acts 20.28-38: Paul continued "You elders are the leaders of the Church of God. Be on your guard against bad leaders trying to mislead people. Remember my example. I never asked anyone for money or clothes. You know how my work as a tentmaker earned enough to support my companions and me. Remember Jesus' words There is more happiness in giving than in receiving". When he finished speaking, he knelt down with them and prayed. Then they took him to the ship

Luke 19.41-48: As Jesus caught sight of Jerusalem, he shed tears over it and said "How I wish you had accepted my message of peace. You will be totally destroyed, because you rejected God's offer of grace". Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out the sellers. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers' den". Each day Jesus taught in the Temple. The leaders wanted to do away with him, but they didn't know how to, since most of the ordinary  people had great respect for Jesus
Jesus, please don't let me ever reject your friendship

Hello from Sao Paulo in Brazil (the large dark green country on the map) where I arrived yesterday afternoon after a 9 hour 40 min flight from Johannesburg .... on a beautiful Airbus 330-300 (which has a full power plug for each seat ....my computer was happy). And yesterday was a great day to be in Sao Paulo since it was established (by Jesuit priests!) on Jan 25 in 1554 and named in honour of St Paul because Jan 25 is the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul. Sao Paulo is the world's 4th largest city by population (after Tokyo, Delhi and Shanghai).

On the flight I watched this really powerful movie: Just Mercy

(c.f. readings for feast of Timothy and Titus)
2 Timothy 1.1-5
:
From Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, dear child of mine in the faith, wishing you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord. I always remember your sincere faith. It came first to live in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and now in yourself.
Jesus, thank you for parents who pass on the faith to their children

My recording of this reading

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Titus 1.1-9: From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to Titus, true child of mine in the faith we share, wishing you grace and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Saviour. The reason I left you behind in Crete was for you to appoint elders in every town: each of them a man of irreproachable character, married only once, not arrogant or hot-tempered, not a heavy drinker, not out to make money. A man who is hospitable and a friend of all that is good; sensible, devout, with a firm grasp of the Good News, a good teacher, able to refute people who argue against sound doctrine.
Jesus, please help all pastors be good "elders"

Matthew 10.1-16: Many men followed Jesus as "fishers of men", as "disciples". Jesus chose 12 of them and called them "apostles": Peter and his brother Andrew;
Zebedees' sons
James and John
Philip and Bartholomew;
Thomas
 and Matthew;
James son of Alphaeus;
Thaddaeus, Simon and Judas.
Jesus sent them to prepare his way by visiting the places he would go. He gave them power to cast out evil spirits and to heal all kinds of sicknesses. He said to them: Proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near. Cure the sick. Raise the dead. Cleanse lepers. Cast out devils.
Jesus, please help all Christians to be apostles and fishers of people

c.f. readings for Feast of Conversion of St Paul

Isaiah 51-52: Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him.
Jesus, please help me understand how unkindness to others is unkindness to you

Mark 16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved. Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils, they will have the gift of tongues, they will pick up snakes in their hands, they will be unharmed if they drink poison, they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed". And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

Job 18-19: Bildad then said that Job's suffering was caused by his sins. Job repeated that he was innocent of any wrong-doing. He added: "I am sure of three things: my God lives, my God will rescue me, and I will see my God's face.

Acts 20.22-24: Paul continued "Now you see me a prisoner already in spirit. I am on my way to Jerusalem, and have no idea what will happen to me there. The Holy Spirit has made it clear that imprisonment and persecution await me there. But life to me is not a thing to waste words on. What matters is that when I finish my race, I have carried out the mission the Lord Jesus gave me - to bear witness to the Good News of God's grace"
Jesus, please help me live a worthwhile life

Luke 19.28-40:
When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples  spread their clothes on the road, and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord, we praise and love you
