Tues Feb 6 and Wed Feb 7 (HK time)

Hello from Los Angeles where I arrived very late on the night of Sunday Feb 4 local time after a flight from El Salvador preceded by a flight from Bogota. Very late Monday Feb 5 local time I was due to take a flight for HK, arriving HK Feb 7. No Feb 6 because of different international times.

On most of my flights during this 6-week trip I have tried to sit at the very back of the plane, in the very last seat ...where often I have a spare seat beside me and can easily use my computer... with mouse on tray table of spare seat. On the flight from El Salvador when I took my place in the very last seat, a kind air steward offered me "a seat at the front" which I declined. A second time he made an offer, saying the back seat is very noisy being next to where the crew gather and next to the toilet. I said I don't mind the noise ... and near toilet can be convenient for old people. Then a third time he repeated his offer, saying that my back seat could not recline ....not good for rest for a five hour flight. So I then accepted his kind offer and found myself in business class! Also found myself remembering the words of Jesus ..."go and sit in the last place and standby (no pun intended) for an upgrade"!

A number of people, when they heard I was going to LA, said the same thing: "It never rains in LA". Well, over the past few days it has not rained ...it has DELUGED ....a similar situation in China. I guess China and USA must be on the same planet! Google "LA heavy rain" to see what I mean. Even emergencies in many places.

At Mass on the morning of Monday 5 I prayed for the US: that it be a nation of peace, not a nation of war and guns (... Gaza ... mass shootings); that it be a nation where the unborn are safe (... Biden now campaigning on pro-abortion program); that the immense goodness in US society would prevail over the immense evil here; that the US would export peace and compassion and and care ....not bombs and destruction.

Now at the end of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone I have met on the trip

On Sunday afternoon at Bogota airport, while waiting for my flight to El Salvador, I made a first draft of a letter which a kind journalist in Bogota is going to use as part of a report about the anti-drug campaign. The draft is here

Proverbs 3: Let kindness and loyalty never leave you. Tie them around your neck. In everything you do, keep God in mind. He will help you take the right path. Love God and turn your back on evil. This will give good health to your body. Do not refuse a kindness to anyone who asks, if it is in your power to help them.
Lord, please help us to be kind to everyone

My recording of this reading

Psalms 109-110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Acts 24.1-26: When the religious leaders arrived, they put their case to Felix. They summed up their accusations by saying "The plain truth is that we find this man to be a perfect pest. He stirs up trouble among Jews everywhere, and is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect". Paul replied "In regard to the Way, which they malign as a sect, I serve and worship the very same God worshipped by our ancestors. I live in hope that God will raise the dead. If that's my crime, my accusers are just as guilty as I am". Felix postponed a decision. He met with Paul many  times, hoping  Paul would offer him a bribe.
Jesus, please help judges to avoid bribery

Luke 22.47-53: While Jesus was  speaking, a group of men arrived, led by Judas. One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus. Jesus told his apostles not to use their swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him. Jesus said to the men arresting him "This is your hour. This is the reign of darkness"
Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our salvation.

Hello from Bogota airport on Sunday Feb 4 local time as I wait for a flight to Los Angeles, from which tomorrow I am due to fly to HK. CORRECTION! Turns out direct flight from Bogota to LA no longer flies ...and I am booked to go to El Salvador, then take flight to LA. El Salvador - Oscar Romero! Google "Oscar Romero" for link to Wiki article. *** One of my favorite movies!

Proverbs 2: If you turn your ear to wisdom, you will discover the knowledge of God. For God himself is the giver of wisdom. From his mouth come knowledge and discernment. When wisdom comes into your heart, then prudence and discernment will protect you from evil

Psalm 108:
My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations. With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every day

Acts 23.12-22: The next day about 40 Jews held a meeting. They decided not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. They asked the religious leaders to arrange another meeting so that they could attack Paul. But the son of Paul's sister heard of the plot. He got into the barracks and told Paul. Paul got the boy to tell the captain. The captain immediately arranged for a large group of soldiers to take Paul to Caesarea to be tried by Felix the governor. Felix said "I will wait till your accusers come here too, then I will hear your case"
Jesus, please help people who are in danger of being murdered

Luke 22. 39-46: After the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus said to them "Pray for protection in time of trial". Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters away, knelt down and prayed "Father, save me from this time of trial. But let your will, not mine, be done". An angel from heaven appeared to him to give him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood falling to the ground. When he got up and went to the disciples, he found them sleeping - so overcome were they with sorrow
Jesus, please help me to pray "not my will, but yours be done"

Hello again from Bogota in Colombia. Yesterday, my last full day in Bogota, I spent much time at Bogota cathedral saying thank you for the whole trip .... and praying especially for Colombia, praying that the President will be successful in his effort to solve his country's cocaine problem which is worse than ever. Today I am due to go to one last country before heading back to HK

On Day 42 of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone praying for the trip ... and on all I am meeting on the trip.

c.f. readings for Sunday 5

Job 3-7: Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been born. He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My suffering doesn't let me rest." Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he loves. Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being punished?  He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'  During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.' Neither day nor night offers me any relief from my suffering."
Dear Lord, please give courage and peace to people who are suffering great pain or distress

My recording of this reading

Psalm 147: Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.
It is right and fitting to praise and love you, Lord our Creator

1 Corinthians 9.12-27: I put up with anything, rather than obstruct the Good News of Christ in any way. I make myself all things to all people, in order to save some. All the runners at the stadium are trying to win, but only one of them gets the prize. You must run in the same way, meaning to win the gold medal of eternal life. That is how I run, intent on winning. Therefore I try to stay in top condition, avoiding sloppy living.
Jesus, may I run a good race till my last day

Mark 1.29-34: Jesus  went to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus took her by the hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve her visitors. That night all the local sick people were brought to Jesus. He healed many who were suffering from all kinds of diseases. He also cast out many devils.

Proverbs 1: If you listen to these sayings, you will acquire wisdom. These sayings will help you develop virtue, justice and fairness. Be careful of bad people who try to mislead you. A net is spread in vain if the bird is watching. Wisdom calls aloud in the streets. She delivers her message at the city gates: "How much longer will you prefer ignorance to knowledge? The complacency of fools works their own ruin. But whoever listens to me will live in safety. Whoever listens to me will choose good and avoid evil."
Dear God, please give us more wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south.

Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.

Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.

Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat, and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

Acts 22.30 - 23.11: To find out why the Jews were attacking Paul, the captain arranged a meeting of the religious leaders, and allowed Paul to speak to them. Paul realized that the leaders had two groups: Sadducees (who didn't believe in angels or an after-life) and Pharisees (who did believe in angels and an after-life). So Paul called out "I am a Pharisee. It is for our hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial". This caused the Pharisees and Sadducees to begin a violent argument that put Paul's life in danger. The captain ordered Paul to be taken back into the barracks. The next night, the Lord appeared to him and said "Courage! You have born witness for me in Jerusalem. Now you must do the same in Rome"

Jesus replied "Peter, before the rooster crows, you will  deny three times that you know me".

Readings for Feast of Presentation

Malachi 3.1-2: The Lord God says this: Look, I am going to send my messenger to prepare a way before me. And the Lord you are seeking will suddenly enter his Temple.
Jesus presented in the Temple on this day, we praise you Lord
My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the  universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Hebrews 2.14-18: The Son did not become an angel. He became a man, so that he could die for us. By his death he took away the power of the devil. He himself experienced temptation. He is able to help us when we are tempted.
Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong

Recording

Luke 2.22-32: When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying "Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel".
Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you Lord
Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
Simeon in Luke's Gospel and the three wise men in Matthew's Gospel have the same message: the Baby born
in the stable is the Saviour of not just Israel but of the whole world. May all places, all hearts "let him enter" (Psalms 24-26)

Job 40-42: Job said to God " My words have been frivolous. I will not say anything else." God then reminded Job how God was creator of everything, including amazing animals like the hippo and crocodile. Job then said to God "I know you are all-powerful. I have been speaking about things I don't fully understand. I retract all I have said and in dust and ashes I repent." God then praised Job for his fidelity. God restored Job to good health. God restored Job's possessions, more than he had before: 10 more children and thousands of animals. Job lived to be 140 years old and died full of peace.
Dear God, you never really answered Job's questions about the mystery of evil and suffering ....but I know your Son Jesus gave us the answers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Acts 22.24-29: Paul was taken into the soldiers' barracks. The captain ordered Paul to be tortured to find out the truth about his situation. But when they tied him down, Paul said "Is it legal for you to flog a  Roman citizen? The captain said "It cost me a lot of money to acquire Roman citizenship". Paul replied "I was born a Roman citizen". Paul was untied without being flogged

Luke 22.12-20: On the evening of the Passover feast, Jesus and his apostles ate the Passover Lamb in a large upper room furnished with couches. While they were having the meal, Jesus took some bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to his apostles saying: "This is my body. Do this in memory of me". Then he took a cup of wine and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you"

Is it possible that a loving son would celebrate LY Eve meal with only his male friends ... and say to his mother and women friends "Sorry ...men only"? Hello again one last time from Sao Paulo in Brazil ....I am due to leave for another country this morning. Yesterday I attended a press conference and a very important live meeting, then a zoom meeting.  Brazil is a very friendly place but I have been sad here to see hundreds ... thousands?... of drug addicts living on the streets .... begging money from motorists stopped at red lights ...sometimes threatening such motorists ...causing businesses to close because of so many robberies .... a huge problem ...many people trying to help .... like Fr Julio ....

Job 32-39: Job's three friends had no more to say. But a young  man named Elihu, decided to join the conversation. He said to Job "How can you claim to be innocent and yet say that God is persecuting you without cause?" As Elihu continued his speech, suddenly  the voice of God himself was heard. God asked Job "Have you ever given orders to the morning for day to begin? Have you ever arranged the stars in the sky? Was it you who gave all the animals their various powers? Who do you think you are?"
Dear God, when we are confronted by the mystery of suffering and evil, please help us realize that these things do not come from you

Psalm 105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples. O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength. Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.

Acts 22.1-23: Paul said to the crowd "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus. I was brought up here in Jerusalem. I studied under Gamaliel. I fully observed the Law of our ancestors. I even persecuted this Way to the death, and sent many people to prison. But once when I was on my way to Damascus to arrest followers of the Way, Jesus appeared to me and said 'I am Jesus the Nazarene, and you are persecuting me'. Then a believer in Damascus told me I was to be Jesus' witness in many places". Up to now, the crowd had listened quietly to Paul, but when he said that Jesus was sending him to non-Jews in far away places, the crowd shouted "Rid the earth of this man! He's not fit to live!"
Jesus, please help Jewish people accept you as the Anointed One

Luke 22.1-6: Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover which was only a few days away. The religious  leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them from killing Jesus. But then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot who was one of the 12 apostles. Judas went to the leaders to plan how to capture Jesus.  The leaders agreed to give Judas some money for his help. Judas then began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around
