Tues Feb 6 and Wed Feb 7 (HK time)
Hello
from Los Angeles where I arrived very late on the night of Sunday Feb 4 local
time after a flight from El Salvador preceded by a flight from Bogota. Very late
Monday Feb 5 local time I was due to take a flight for HK, arriving HK Feb 7. No
Feb 6 because of different international times.
On most of my flights during this 6-week trip I have tried to sit at the very back of the plane, in the very last seat ...where often I have a spare seat beside me and can easily use my computer... with mouse on tray table of spare seat. On the flight from El Salvador when I took my place in the very last seat, a kind air steward offered me "a seat at the front" which I declined. A second time he made an offer, saying the back seat is very noisy being next to where the crew gather and next to the toilet. I said I don't mind the noise ... and near toilet can be convenient for old people. Then a third time he repeated his offer, saying that my back seat could not recline ....not good for rest for a five hour flight. So I then accepted his kind offer and found myself in business class! Also found myself remembering the words of Jesus ..."go and sit in the last place and standby (no pun intended) for an upgrade"!
A number of people, when they heard I was going to LA, said the same thing: "It never rains in LA". Well, over the past few days it has not rained ...it has DELUGED ....a similar situation in China. I guess China and USA must be on the same planet! Google "LA heavy rain" to see what I mean. Even emergencies in many places.
At Mass on the morning of Monday 5 I prayed for the US: that it be a nation of peace, not a nation of war and guns (... Gaza ... mass shootings); that it be a nation where the unborn are safe (... Biden now campaigning on pro-abortion program); that the immense goodness in US society would prevail over the immense evil here; that the US would export peace and compassion and and care ....not bombs and destruction.
Now at the end of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone I have met on the trip
On
Sunday afternoon at Bogota airport, while waiting for my flight to El Salvador,
I made a first draft of a letter which a kind journalist in Bogota is going to
use as part of a report about the anti-drug campaign. The draft is here

Proverbs
3: Let kindness and loyalty never leave you.
Tie them around your neck. In everything you do, keep God in mind.
He will help you take the right path. Love God and turn your back on evil.
This will give good health to your body. Do not refuse a kindness to anyone who asks,
if it is in your power to help them.
Lord, please help us to be kind
to everyone

recording of this reading

Psalms
109-110: O God whom I praise,
do not be silent,
for people are bombarding me with words of hate. They speak to me with
lying tongues
and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for
good.
While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object
of scorn.
Help me, Lord my God.
Lord,
when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Acts
24.1-26: When the religious leaders arrived,
they put their case to Felix.
They summed up their accusations by saying "The plain truth is that
we find this man to be a perfect pest.
He stirs up trouble among Jews everywhere, and is a ringleader of the
Nazarene sect". Paul replied "In regard to the
Way, which they malign as a sect,
I serve and worship the very same God worshipped by our ancestors. I live
in hope that God will raise the dead. If that's my crime, my accusers are
just as guilty as I am". Felix postponed a decision. He met
with Paul many times, hoping Paul would offer him a
bribe.
Jesus, please help judges to avoid
bribery

Luke
22.47-53: While Jesus was speaking, a group of
men arrived, led by Judas.
One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut
off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus. Jesus told his apostles not to use their
swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him.
Jesus said to the men arresting him "This
is your hour. This is the reign of darkness"
Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our
salvation.

Proverbs
2: If you turn your ear to wisdom,
you will discover the knowledge of God. For God himself is the giver of wisdom.
From his mouth come knowledge and discernment. When wisdom comes into your heart,
then prudence and discernment will protect you from evil.

Psalm 108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing
your praise.
Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,
praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens
and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today.
Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations.
With your help we shall be brave.

Acts
23.12-22: The next day about 40 Jews held a meeting. They decided not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. They
asked the religious leaders to arrange another meeting so that they could
attack Paul. But the son of Paul's sister heard of the
plot. He got into the barracks and told Paul. Paul got the boy to tell the
captain. The captain immediately arranged for a large group of soldiers to
take Paul to Caesarea to be tried by Felix the governor. Felix said "I will wait till your
accusers come here too, then I will hear your case"

Luke
22. 39-46: After the Passover meal, Jesus and his
disciples went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus said to them
"Pray for protection in time of trial". Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters
away, knelt down and prayed "Father, save me from this time of
trial. But let your will, not mine, be done". An angel from heaven appeared to him to give
him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood
falling to the ground. When he got up and went to the disciples, he
found them sleeping - so overcome were they with sorrow
Jesus, please help me to pray "not my

is worse than ever. Today I am due to go to one last
country before heading back to HK

Job
3-7: Job
broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been born. He added
"For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My suffering doesn't let me
rest." Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he
loves. Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being
punished? He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'
During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.' Neither
day nor night offers me any relief from my suffering."
Dear Lord, please give courage and peace to
people who are suffering great pain or distress
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
147: Praise the Lord for he
is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord
builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He
heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises
the lowly and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls
each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be
measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth,
making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His
delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord
delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.
It is right and fitting to praise and love you,
Lord our Creator

That night all the local sick people were brought to Jesus. He healed many who

Proverbs
1: If you listen to these sayings, you
will acquire wisdom.
These sayings will help you develop virtue, justice and fairness. Be careful of bad people who try to
mislead you.
A net is spread in vain if the bird is watching. Wisdom calls aloud in the streets.
She delivers her message at the city gates: "How much longer will you prefer
ignorance to knowledge?
The complacency of fools works their own ruin. But whoever listens to me will live
in safety.
Whoever listens to me will choose good and avoid evil."

My

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south.
Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.
Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.
Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat, and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.
Some people sailed to the sea in ships
and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need
and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love,
for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these
things
and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank
you Lord, for your rescuing love

22.30 - 23.11: To find out why the Jews were attacking Paul,
the captain arranged a meeting of the religious leaders, and allowed Paul

Sadducees (who didn't believe in angels or an after-life) and Pharisees
(who did believe in angels and an after-life). So Paul called out "I am a Pharisee. It
is for our hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial".
This caused the Pharisees and Sadducees to begin a violent argument that
put Paul's life in danger. The captain ordered Paul to be taken back into

Hello again one last time from Sao Paulo in Brazil ....I am due

conference and a very important live meeting, then a zoom meeting. Brazil
is a very friendly place but I have been sad here to see hundreds ...

motorists stopped at red lights ...sometimes threatening such motorists
...causing businesses to close because of so many robberies .... a huge problem
...many people trying to help .... like Fr

Job 32-39: Job's three friends had no more to say.
But a young man named Elihu, decided to join the conversation. He said to Job "How can you claim to be
innocent and yet say that God is persecuting you without cause?" As Elihu continued his speech, suddenly the voice of God himself was
heard. God asked Job "Have you ever given orders
to the morning for day to begin? Have you ever arranged the stars in the sky?
Was it you who gave all the animals their
various powers?
Who do you think you are?"

22.1-23: Paul said to the crowd "I am a Jew, born

fully observed the Law of our ancestors. I even persecuted this Way to the
death, and sent many people to prison.
But once when I was on my way to Damascus to arrest followers of the Way,
Jesus appeared to me and said 'I am Jesus the Nazarene, and you are persecuting
me'. Then a believer in Damascus told me I was to be Jesus'
witness in many places".
Up to now, the crowd had listened quietly to Paul, but when he said that
