Proverbs 9: Wisdom has built herself a house, she has erected 7 pillars. She has sent out her maidservants to proclaim from the city's heights: "Come and eat my bread, drink the wine I have prepared. Leave your foolishness and you will live. Come and walk in the way of wisdom."
Lord, please help us accept your invitation to grow in wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalms 114-115: When Israel came out of Egypt, Jacob's descendents from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple, Israel became his kingdom. Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. To you may the Lord grant increase, to you and all your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth
Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings

Listen

Acts 27.21-37: Paul then spoke to everyone: Don't despair. There will be no loss of life. Last night an angel of God said to me: "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to go to Rome. Therefore God grants you the safety of all who are sailing with you". On the 14th day, Paul took some bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it and  gave it to everyone to eat. This gave them courage. There were 276 of them on the ship
Jesus, thank you for the courage that Communion gives us

Listen

Luke 23.13-25: Pilate said to the religious leaders and to the people "You brought this man before me as a political agitator. Neither Herod nor I have found a case against the man. He has done nothing deserving death. I shall have him flogged and then let him go". But the leaders and people screamed out "Away with him. Crucify him!" Pilate asked "Why? What harm has he done?" They kept shouting "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate then gave in to them and handed Jesus over for crucifixion
Jesus, how great your mental suffering must have been as the crowd shouted for your death

Proverbs 7-8: To Wisdom say "My sister".  Call Perception your dearest friend. Wisdom says:
"The Lord created me before time began. I was by his side, delighting him day after day. Happy those who keep my ways. Happy those who listen to me. Whoever finds me finds life. I am more precious than silver or gold."

Dear Lord, please help me to be a friend of Wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Listen

Acts 27.9-20: Navigation at that time of the year was dangerous, since winter was starting. But the ship's captain set sail hoping to reach Phoenix, a harbor in Crete. Suddenly a fierce storm began and the ship could not be turned head-on to the wind. We had to let ourselves be driven by the wind. The ship was badly damaged by the storm. On the second day, the cargo was dumped overboard. For several days both sun stars were invisible as the storm raged.  We lost all hope of surviving
Jesus, help sailors who are in danger at sea today

Listen

Luke 22-23: At daybreak there was a meeting of the religious leaders. Jesus was brought before them. They asked him "Are you the Son of God?". He replied "Yes". They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the Roman governor, Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said "I find no case against him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent him back to Pilate
Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before Herod and before Pilate, please help all prisoners who are on trial today

c.f. readings for Sunday 6

Leviticus 13-15: Instructions for hygiene: People with skin diseases, suspected leprosy, boils and burns should be carefully examined and isolated if necessary. The clothing and homes of people with leprosy should be put out of use. During and after seminal or illness discharges and menstruation, people should show extra concern for hygiene.
Dear God, please help me take good care of my health

My recording of this reading

Psalm 32: Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven. For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness, and my body paid the penalty. But then I said "Lord, forgive me" and my spirit and body revived.
Lord, when I do wrong, please give me the grace to say sorry and ask forgiveness

 Listen

1 Corinthians 10.16 - 11.1: The cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. Avoid anything to do with idol worship.  It doesn't make sense to share in the table of the Lord and in the table of demons. Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone. Try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for your own advantage, but for the advantage of others, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ.
Jesus, please help me imitate you in my daily life

 Listen

Mark 1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees pleaded "If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!" The leprosy left him at that moment and he was healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had happened (in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use him politically).  But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town (for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who are lepers

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings:  The leper broke the law - he wasn't supposed to go near people. Jesus broke the law - he wasn't supposed to touch a leper. Sometimes ... it's ok to break some laws! And see this beautiful reflection for World Day of the Sick by Pope Francis

God bless all dear readers with good health in the Lunar New Year!

MercyHK"s canteen in Temple Street is closed for the LNY break. It will re-open on Wed Feb 14. Yesterday the MercyHK staff had a happy LNY meal, also celebrating the birthday of canteen manager Lucia Leung

Yesterday I started processing some of the 60 or so letters from prisoners which arrived while I was away on my recent anti-drug trafficking trip. The prisoners will be happy today ... it's one of the three days in the year when they receive a chicken leg in their main meal ... instead of the usual chicken wings. The two other days being Christmas Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

c.f. readings for Lunar New Year

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

 Listen

Ephesians 1.9-13: God the Father has let us know his sacred plan: the whole show, everything in heaven and everything in earth, is one big orchestra with Christ as the conductor. We Jews are special instruments in the orchestra. We were chosen to put our hope in Christ before he came. And you non-Jews are also on the stage, now that you have believed the truth of the Good News. All of us have been stamped with the Holy Spirit. He's the composer whose music we are playing
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thank you for the gift of life and the gift of faith. Help me play well!

 Listen

Matthew 6.25-34: Jesus said to the crowds that life is about more than food and clothing. Pointing to some birds flying around, Jesus said: Look at the birds. They don't sow or reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are more precious than the birds. Pointing to flowers in the field Jesus said: How beautiful are the flowers. They are more beautiful than King Solomon's clothing. If God cares so much about the life of flowers won't he care even more about human life? So, don't spend your day worrying about what you are going to eat and drink and wear. Put God first in your life, God and a right way of life, then God will look after your physical needs. Don't waste your energy worrying about tomorrow. Live life one day at a time.
Heavenly Father, thank you for caring for the birds and flowers....and me!

Proverbs 6: Idler, go to the ant. Ponder her ways and grow wise. No one gives her orders, yet she makes sure of her food. Night and day you spend so much time sleeping. In no time poverty and want will be at your pillow. Avoid deceitful people, those who have leering lips, winking eyes, shuffling feet, beckoning fingers. Avoid people with a haughty look and people who sow dissension. Do not desire the beauty of your neighbour's wife. Adultery means trouble and disgrace.
Dear God, please give us the wisdom to avoid deceit and dishonesty

My recording of this reading

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with integrity. Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Acts 27.1-8: For the journey to Rome, Paul and some other prisoners were put in the custody of a soldier named Julius. After sailing for one day, we arrived at the city of Sidon, where Julius kindly allowed Paul to meet with some friends. Then we sailed past Cyprus and reached the city of Myra in Lycia, where we changed to a ship bound for Italy. The wind was against us near Crete. We struggled along the coast to a place called Fair Havens
Jesus, help prison guards to be kind like Julius

Luke 22.63-65: The men who were guarding Jesus mocked him and beat him. They blindfolded him. "Since you are a prophet", they said, "tell us who hit you just then". And they continued heaping insults on him
Jesus, please stop me from making offensive fun of other people

Listen

Reflection:  How could children mock and beat their parents? How could creatures mock and beat God the Son?

Proverbs 4-5: Acquire wisdom, never forget her. Do not desert her. She will keep you safe. Wisdom is life to those who obtain her, health for the entire body. Take no notice of a loose-living woman, go nowhere near the door of her house. Drink the water of your own cistern, fresh water from your own well. Find joy with the wife you married in your youth, let hers be the love that always holds you captive.
Dear Lord, please give married people the wisdom to stay faithful to each other

My recording of this reading

Psalm 111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart. Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever. The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all times. He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Dear Lord, please help me to love and honor you every day

Listen

Acts 24.27 -25.12: After two years, Felix was succeeded by Festus. Festus arranged a new trial for Paul. The religious leaders repeated their accusations. Paul repeated his innocence. Festus wanted to gain favor with the leaders so he said to Paul "Are you willing to go to Jerusalem for a trial with the full council of religious leaders, at which I would preside?" Paul knew his rights, and stood his ground, not wanting to go to a kangaroo court in Jerusalem. So he invoked his right as a Roman citizen: "I appeal to Caesar". Festus replied "You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar (Rome) you shall go"
Jesus, please give us courage to stand up for our rights

Listen

Luke 22.54-62: The men who arrested Jesus took him to the home of the main religious leader. Peter followed at a distance. As Peter sat by a fire in the courtyard, a servant-girl said "This man was with Jesus".  Peter replied "Woman I do not know him". A little while later, another person said "You are one of them". Peter replied "I am not". About an hour later, a man said "He was certainly with them. He is from Galilee". Peter replied "I do not know what you are talking about". While he was still speaking, a rooster crowed, and the Lord looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times". Peter went outside and cried bitterly
Jesus, don't let me ever deny that I know you

Tues Feb 6 and Wed Feb 7 (HK time)

Hello from Los Angeles where I arrived very late on the night of Sunday Feb 4 local time after a flight from El Salvador preceded by a flight from Bogota. Very late Monday Feb 5 local time I was due to take a flight for HK, arriving HK Feb 7. No Feb 6 because of different international times.

On most of my flights during this 6-week trip I have tried to sit at the very back of the plane, in the very last seat ...where often I have a spare seat beside me and can easily use my computer... with mouse on tray table of spare seat. On the flight from El Salvador when I took my place in the very last seat, a kind air steward offered me "a seat at the front" which I declined. A second time he made an offer, saying the back seat is very noisy being next to where the crew gather and next to the toilet. I said I don't mind the noise ... and near toilet can be convenient for old people. Then a third time he repeated his offer, saying that my back seat could not recline ....not good for rest for a five hour flight. So I then accepted his kind offer and found myself in business class! Also found myself remembering the words of Jesus ..."go and sit in the last place and standby (no pun intended) for an upgrade"!

A number of people, when they heard I was going to LA, said the same thing: "It never rains in LA". Well, over the past few days it has not rained ...it has DELUGED ....a similar situation in China. I guess China and USA must be on the same planet! Google "LA heavy rain" to see what I mean. Even emergencies in many places.

At Mass on the morning of Monday 5 I prayed for the US: that it be a nation of peace, not a nation of war and guns (... Gaza ... mass shootings); that it be a nation where the unborn are safe (... Biden now campaigning on pro-abortion program); that the immense goodness in US society would prevail over the immense evil here; that the US would export peace and compassion and and care ....not bombs and destruction.

Now at the end of this anti-drug trafficking trip, I again ask God's blessing on all who made the trip possible and on everyone I have met on the trip

On Sunday afternoon at Bogota airport, while waiting for my flight to El Salvador, I made a first draft of a letter which a kind journalist in Bogota is going to use as part of a report about the anti-drug campaign. The draft is here

Proverbs 3: Let kindness and loyalty never leave you. Tie them around your neck. In everything you do, keep God in mind. He will help you take the right path. Love God and turn your back on evil. This will give good health to your body. Do not refuse a kindness to anyone who asks, if it is in your power to help them.
Lord, please help us to be kind to everyone

My recording of this reading

Psalms 109-110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Listen

Acts 24.1-26: When the religious leaders arrived, they put their case to Felix. They summed up their accusations by saying "The plain truth is that we find this man to be a perfect pest. He stirs up trouble among Jews everywhere, and is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect". Paul replied "In regard to the Way, which they malign as a sect, I serve and worship the very same God worshipped by our ancestors. I live in hope that God will raise the dead. If that's my crime, my accusers are just as guilty as I am". Felix postponed a decision. He met with Paul many  times, hoping  Paul would offer him a bribe.
Jesus, please help judges to avoid bribery

Listen

Luke 22.47-53: While Jesus was  speaking, a group of men arrived, led by Judas. One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus. Jesus told his apostles not to use their swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him. Jesus said to the men arresting him "This is your hour. This is the reign of darkness"
Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our salvation.
