Readings are from Simple Bible

Proverbs 16: A person  proposes, God disposes. Ask the Lord to bless all your plans. Kindness and loyalty make up for sin. Love of the Lord brings avoidance of evil. If the Lord is pleased with your way of life, he will cause your enemies to become your friends. Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. A troublemaker sows strife. A talebearer separates friends. Better to be a peaceful person than a hero. Better to be master of yourself than the conqueror of a city.
Lord, please give me a humble, peaceful spirit
My recording of this reading

Psalms 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Romans 1.1-7: From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News. This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took, was a descendant of David. This news is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, by his resurrection from the dead, proved he was the Son of God. From him I received my mission to preach the obedience of faith to non-Jewish nations. You are one of these nations. You belong to Jesus Christ. To you who are God's beloved friends in Rome, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give grace and peace
Jesus, Son of God, may all nations know and love you

Listen

Luke 23.50-56: Joseph from the town of Arimathaea was a member of the religious leaders' council. He was a good and just man, and had not agreed to the killing of Jesus. Late Friday afternoon, he went to Governor Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. He took it down from the cross, wrapped it in a burial cloth, and put it in a rock tomb that had not yet been used. The women from Galilee who had come to Jerusalem with Jesus went with Joseph to the tomb. Then they left to prepare burial spices and ointments. They planned to put these on Jesus' body after the Saturday Sabbath day of rest
Jesus in the tomb, please give eternal life to all the dead

Listen

Reflection: Dead body in tomb .... the ultimate hopeless situation .... except that "hopeless" is not in God's dictionary!

Proverbs 15: A mild answer diffuses a tense situation. A sharp answer stirs up anger. A kind tongue is a  source of life. A harsh tongue hurts other people's feelings. A happy heart produces a cheerful face. A sad heart means a drooping spirit. Hot-headed people provoke disputes. Peaceful people prevent disputes. Without deliberation, plans come to nothing. Successful plans need many counselors. A kindly glance gives joy to the heart. Good news gives strength to the bones.
Dear Lord, please give me a kind tongue

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Listen

Acts 28.17-31: Not long after his arrival in Rome, Paul had a meeting with a large number of Jews. The meeting went from early morning until evening. Paul talked to them about the kingdom of God. He tried to help them believe in Jesus. Some accepted Jesus. Paul was in detention for two years, in his own rented house. He welcomed everyone who came to visit him.  With boldness and without hindrance, he taught people about the Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus, thank you for the Acts of the Apostles. May I help more people know and love you, like Paul

Listen

Luke 23.44-49: At about midday, there was an eclipse of the sun. The whole land was in darkness until about 3pm. The veil of the Temple was torn right down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice "Father, into your hands I entrust my life".  Then he died. When the Roman army leader saw what had happened,
he said "This was a great and good man".
The people who had been present went home asking God for mercy. Jesus' friends stood at a distance and saw all that had happened
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

c.f. readings for Lent 1

Genesis 7-9: Noah's family and many animals went into the big boat, the "ark". Then for about 40 days there was heavy rain which caused a great  flood. The ark floated on the water. The people and animals inside the ark were safe but people and animals outside the ark died. When the rain and flood stopped Noah and his family and the animals went out of the ark. God made a special agreement (covenant) with Noah to bless Noah and his family. God told Noah that the rainbow would be a sign of their agreement.
Dear God, thank you for making the rainbow so beautiful

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.

Mark 1.9-13: About this time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the river Jordan. As soon as Jesus came out of the water, he saw the sky open and the Spirit, like a dove, coming down on him. Then a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you". Straight after this the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for 40 days. During this time Jesus was tempted by Satan.
Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

Proverbs 13-14: Guard your talk and you will protect your life. People who talk too much, easily get into trouble. Choose wise people as your friends and you will be happy. Choose foolish people as friends and your problems will multiply. The heart knows its own grief best. No human person can fully understand another person's heart. A peaceful heart is necessary for good health. Envy is like a cancer in the bones. Injustice to the poor is an insult to our Creator. Kindness to the poor gives honor to our Creator. Virtue makes a nation great. Sin causes empires to fall.
Dear God, please help everyone in our country to be wise and kind and just

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Listen

Acts 28.11-16: After three months we set sail in a ship going to Italy. Our trip took us to Syracuse, Rhegium and Puteoli before we arrived in Rome. Believers in Rome heard of Paul's arrival and came to meet us. When Paul saw them, he thanked God with all his heart. Paul was allowed to stay in lodgings of his own, with a soldier to guard him
Jesus, thank you helping Paul reach
Rome safely. Thank you for protecting me on all my journeys

Luke 23.39-43: One of the criminals hanging on a cross mockingly said to Jesus "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us as well". But the other criminal rebuked the first one and said "We are paying the penalty for our crimes. But this man has done nothing wrong". "Jesus", he said, "remember me when you come into your kingdom". Jesus replied "I promise you, this day you will be with me in Paradise"
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom

After my prison visit yesterday I thought I'd have a banana and yogurt meal when I got home. So I bought some bananas and yogurt near Temple Street. And the canteen chef used a blender to turn my bananas and yogurt into a most beautiful production!

Proverbs 11-12: Pride comes before a fall. Humility brings wisdom. A city prospers when good people are many. A city falls when good people are few. Good people are kind to animals. Bad people are cruel to animals. Good people overlook insults. Good people's speech promotes harmony in society. Worry makes our hearts heavy. Kindly words from others make us glad.

Psalm 117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us.
He is faithful for ever.

Acts 28.1-10: We were on the island of Malta. The local people were really kind to us. They made us welcome. They lit a huge fire because the weather was cold and rain was falling. Paul collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire, when a snake bit his hand and held on. The locals expected him to die. But he just shook the snake into the fire. He was ok. The local Roman governor kindly gave us hospitality for three days. The governor's father was very sick in bed with fever and dysentery. He was healed when Paul prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick, came and got healed
Jesus, please bless the people of Malta

Luke 23.33-38: When they reached the place called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there, and the two criminals also, one on his right, the other on his left. Above his head was placed a sign  "This is the King of the Jews". Jesus prayed "Father, forgive them. They do not know what they are doing".  The leaders made fun of him "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God". The soldiers mocked him too "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself"
Jesus, you forgave those who mocked you and crucified you. I forgive anyone who has been unkind to me

Proverbs 10: A wise child is a father's joy. A foolish child is a mother's sorrow. Laziness leads to poverty. Diligence leads to success. Hatred provokes disputes. Love covers over all offences. A flood of words is never without fault. Prudent people control their lips.
Lord, may my words be wise and loving

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Acts 27.39-44: The next day they could see land: a bay with a beach. They tried to reach the beach, but the ship ran aground on a reef and began to break up. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to stop them from escaping, but Julius would not allow this. Some people swam. Some used pieces of wreckage. All of them got to shore safely

Luke 23.26-34:
As Jesus was being led to the place of crucifixion, a man named Simon was coming into Jerusalem from the country. He was made to carry the cross behind Jesus. Large numbers of people followed him, including women who mourned for him. Jesus said to them "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep rather for yourselves and for your children. For if this is how innocent people are treated, what will happen to people who are guilty?" Two criminals were led out with Jesus to be crucified with him

Joel 1-4: My country has been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help. "Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Every one will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."
Lord, let our land be filled with knowledge of you and love for you
My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Recording

2 Cor 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"

- from the song "How Great Thou Art"

Recording

Matthew 6.1-15: Jesus said to the crowds: When you do a good deed, do it for its own sake, not just to get people to praise you. When you pray, love to pray in private in your heart. Don't be looking for people to notice and praise you. When you pray, there's no need to rave on and on. God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case. Prayer is a child speaking with simple trust like this: Our Father in heaven, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Thank you for enough food for today. Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial. Protect us from evil.
Jesus, help me remember that each time I pray "The Our Father", you are praying with me. "Your Father = my Father = our Father"

Recording
