Proverbs 27-29: Do not boast about tomorrow, since you do not know what will happen today. Let others praise you, but do not praise yourself. Better open reproof than voiceless love. From one who loves, wounds are well-intentioned. From one who hates, kisses are ominous. He who admits his faults will prosper. He who confesses and renounces his faults will find mercy. A roaring lion, a hungry bear, such is a bad ruler of a poor people.
Lord, please help me practise the ideas in these words

My recording of this reading

Psalm 127: If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from going later to rest, but from the Lord's blessing. Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Lord, many people these days don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are a blessing

Listen

Romans 4.1-25: Remember our ancestor Abraham. He put his faith in God, and this was how he became holy. We too must put our faith in God the Father who raised Jesus from the dead to make us holy.
Jesus, please increase my faith. Help me believe like Abraham

Listen

John 1: 5, 19-34: John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among them. When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied "I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord". When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born. I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God"
Jesus, lamb of God, Chosen One of God, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit

Proverbs 25-26: Cloud and wind, but no rain. Such is the person who makes a lot of promises but doesn't keep them. Don't over-tax your neighbor's hospitality. If people who don't like you are hungry or thirsty, give them something to eat or drink. In this way you will shame them into being better people. Rain comes by the north wind. A ravaged face comes from a backbiting tongue. An open town, without defences. Such is a person lacking self-control. As a dog returns to its vomit so foolish people return to their folly. Interfering in the quarrels of other people is like catching a stray dog by the tail. No wood, and the fire goes out. No talebearer, and quarrelling dies down.
Lord, please stop me from being  critical of other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Listen

Romans 3.20-24: Only by faith in Jesus can we really become holy in God's sight. This faith is a free gift of God's grace to us. Only when Jesus is in our hearts, can our hearts become holy in God's sight
Jesus, please live in my heart! May you live in me, and I in you

Listen

John 1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God
Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh

c.f. readings for Lent 2

Genesis 22: Abraham loved God very dearly. Once when God put him to the test Abraham was even willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac if that was what God wanted. When God saw Abraham's love and obedience God renewed his promise to make Abraham and Isaac's descendants as many as the stars of heaven.
Dear God, please help us love and obey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Romans 8.35-39: Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus, even if we are in big trouble of any kind. By the power of Jesus who loves us, we can get through any trouble
Jesus, when I am in trouble, help me remember your love

Mark 9.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, how good it is to spend time with you

See my comment at this article about visit to HK by top Beijing man .... as I pray that the reconciliation which happened in South Africa and in Northern Ireland .... will happen in HK!

Mr Xia pls meet Jimmy Lai ...work out a reconciliation plan ....a plan to cover all non-dangerous political prisoners....a bold plan that would turbo charge HK's seriously ailing economy ...a plan that would stun the international community into more respect for and cooperation with China on all fronts

In fact, if a member of the former "enemy" party in Northern Ireland can now be the First Minister in Northern Ireland, could not Jimmy Lai somehow be included in the HK government team?!

Proverbs 23-24: If someone invites you for a meal, be careful not to make a pig of yourself. Don't waste your breath talking to foolish people. Make sure your children receive a wholesome discipline. Don't be a drunkard. Don't be a glutton. Avoid prostitution. Brains are better than brawn. If you make a big mistake and fall, get up and start again
Lord, please help me put into practice the ideas in these words

My recording of this reading

Lord, please help us be more aware of your protecting presence

Romans 2.13-29: People become holy in God's sight by doing what is right. Listening to God's Law is not enough. We have to put it into practice in our lives. Non-Jewish people who follow a good conscience and do what is right, have God's Law engraved on their hearts. What matters is not circumcision of the body, but circumcision of the heart. The real Jew is one who is a Jew in his heart.
Jesus, help me to love you with all my heart. May my love for you not be just something external, but something real, in my heart

Luke 24.50-53: Jesus then took his disciples out of Jerusalem to the village of Bethany. Lifting up his hands, he blessed them. As he blessed them, he was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him, then went back to Jerusalem full of joy. They were continually in the Temple praising God.
Jesus, thank you for the Gospel of Luke. Please increase my faith in you as the One who came down from heaven, and went back to heaven

Proverbs 19-22: Where reflection is wanting, zeal is not good. People who go too quickly  miss their way. Whoever is kind to the poor is kind to the Lord. The Lord will repay such kindness. Children at play show what sort of people they will be in the future. Better the corner of a loft to live in than a house shared with a scolding spouse. Better to live in a desert land than with a scolding and irritable spouse. Instruct children in goodness and justice and they will always be  good adults.
Lord, please help me put into practice the ideas in these words

My recording of this reading

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

Romans 1.26-32: Refusing to honor the Creator is why people's behaviour went bad: why women turned from natural intercourse to unnatural practices, and why men gave up natural intercourse to be consumed with passion for each other, men doing shameless things with men, and getting an appropriate reward for their perversion. Since people refused to honor God, they have dishonored themselves.

Luke 24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high"
Jesus,  increase my faith in your resurrection, and open my mind to  understand the Bible better

Proverbs 18: Foolish people  are not interested in reflection, but only in airing their own opinion. The human heart is haughty until disaster strikes. Humility goes before honor. Don't reply to someone until you've listened to their views. Be slow to interrupt someone who is speaking.
Lord, please help me to be a good listener

My recording of this reading

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.

Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people

Romans 1.18-25: Everyone needs the Good News, especially people who put truth in prison. Ever since the world began, people could know God by seeing the wonders of creation. But even though they saw the beauty of creation, they refused to honor the Creator. They replaced honor for God with honor for images of men and beasts. They worshipped a god they made instead of God who made them
Jesus, may the beauty of creation help people know you and your Father and the Holy Spirit

Luke 24.13-35:
hat same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal.

During the meal, he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

Yesterday afternoon in Admiralty I attended a gathering of about 100 Indonesian domestic workers, for a sharing about the danger of being tricked into drug trafficking jobs inside HK

Coming home on the MTR I had a very humbling experience: an elderly man from Gambia, with lots of luggage ... maybe just arrived in HK ....insisted on giving me his seat when he saw me standing. I normally say "No need ...only two stops" to such kind offers, but his was very special and he was quite insistent. So I accepted his offer to save him from losing face.

Proverbs 17: Better a dry crust of bread eaten in peace than a house where feasting and argument go together. Whoever avoids talking about offences, promotes love. Luke 24.1-11: On Sunday morning, at daybreak, the women went to the tomb with the spices they had prepared. They found that the large stone which had been put at the tomb's entrance had been rolled away. They entered the tomb and found that the body of Jesus was not there. Suddenly two men in brilliant clothes appeared at their side. The men said to them "Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here. He has risen, just as he said he would". The women told all this to the eleven apostles. But the apostles did not believe them.
