Tues March 5

Yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre there was the usual Monday afternoon gathering for street sleepers .... 7 people who actually "sleep rough" every night in this cold weather. One is a drug addict ... the others choose the street for various reasons.

Today in US is "Super Tuesday". I hope voters give Joe Biden a stinging rebuke for his enabling of Israel's genocide in Gaza. If the Democrats reject him because of his age and because of Gaza, and if Trump is hopefully blocked from running by the courts, maybe November might see a contest between two women: Michelle Obama and Nikki Haley?!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Ecclesiastes 8-9: I see injustice in the world: good people are treated badly; bad people are treated well.
I do know, however, that good people are in the special care of God. We must try to be happy as much as we can. We must try to make the most of our lives. Spend your life with the woman you love. Whatever work you have to do, do it well.

Lord, please help me to be optimistic and cheerful

My recording of this reading

Psalm 136: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his great love is without end. It was his wisdom which made the skies, for his great love is without end. It was he who made the sun, moon and stars, for his great love is without end. It was he who rescued and protected his people Israel, for his great love is without end. He gives food to all living things, for his great love is without end. To the God of heaven give thanks, for his great love is without end.
We praise you, Lord, for your great love is without end

Romans 8.9-13: You are on God's team. God the Father is the manager. Jesus is the captain. The Holy Spirit is the coach, a coach living in your heart. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead, is living in you,
then he who raised Jesus from the dead will help you live a risen life. By the grace of the Holy Spirit you can stop doing bad things

Holy Spirit of Jesus, Holy Spirit of the Father, fall afresh on me!

Listen

John 3.25-36: Some of John the Baptist's disciples told John that many of his disciples were leaving him and following Jesus. John replied "I am not the Christ. I am the one who was sent to prepare his way. The bride is only for the bridegroom. But the bridegroom's friend is happy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. This is the happiness I now feel. He must become more and more important. I must become less and less important. Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life. But anyone who refuses to believe in the Son will not have eternal life"
Jesus, be more and more important in my life

Reflection: The aim of so many leaders around the world is to become .... more important

Ecclesiastes 6-7: Even if a person studies wisdom, what use is it? Wise person and fool both must die. Yet wisdom gives protection and strength. And wisdom reminds us that all of us make mistakes. Therefore we should be slow to condemn others.
Lord, may the memory of my own mistakes make me slow to judge other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 135: Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

Listen

Romans 7.14-25: Even though I'm on God's team, I don't always play as well as I should. At times I cannot understand my behavior. I fail to do good things, and I find myself doing bad things. It's as if there is a battle going on inside me. In my heart I dearly love God, but my will is weak, and I do things that I know are wrong. Who can help me keep going? Who can fix up things in my life? Jesus can. He is the one who sorts out things in my life, and changes chaos into order, by the working of the Holy Spirit
Jesus, my life is in your hands. Please arrange my life the way you want to

Listen

John 3.13-17: Jesus said to the religious leader: "The Son of Man must be lifted up on a cross, as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him." God loved the world so much, that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

Listen

c.f. readings for Lent 3

Exodus 20: The Ten Commandments given by God to Moses:

1: I am the Lord your God. Do not worship anyone or anything else.

2: Use my name with respect. Do not insult my name.

3: Make the Sabbath Day a holy day each week.

4: Honor your father and your mother.

5: Do not kill.

6: Do not commit adultery.

7: Do not steal.

8: Do not tell lies.

9: Do not lust after someone else's wife.

10: Do not desire what belongs to someone else.

Dear God, please help us to put these commandments into practice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: (sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm)
The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands.
The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

 Listen

1 Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him.
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my faith in you

 Listen

John 2.13-22: Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple he saw people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, with money changers sitting at their counting tables. Jesus made a whip out of some cord, then drove the sellers out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well. He scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over, and said to the pigeon sellers "Take all of this out of here and stop turning my Father's house into a market". Some religious leaders asked him "What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?" Jesus answered "Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up". The leaders replied "It has taken 46 years to build this sanctuary". But Jesus was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when he rose from the dead, his disciples remembered his words.
Jesus, please don't let churches and prayer centers become centers of commerce

Reflection on the above readings: The Jewish people who received the Ten Commandments came to realise the wisdom of God's law (Psalm) ... that the constant remembering and referring to God's law helps us navigate our way through the ocean of life

Ecclesiastes 4-5: So many things we do are motivated by jealousy. Two people working together can succeed. One person alone is easily defeated. It is better to be content with what you have, than to be greedy for wealth.
Lord, please help me not to be greedy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 134:
O come, bless the Lord, all you who serve the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Lift up your hands to heaven and bless the Lord through the night. May the Lord bless you from Zion, he who made both heaven and earth.
Lord, please protect my family tonight and every night

Romans 6.12-23: Do not let sin control your life. Always remember which team you play for: God's Grace Guys, not Satan's Sin Side. Playing for SSS is a recipe for death. Playing for GGG leads to eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
Jesus, please help me remember I'm on your team

John 3.1-5: A religious leader said to Jesus "you are a teacher who comes from God, for no one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him". Jesus replied "Unless you are born through water and the Spirit, you cannot enter God's kingdom"
Jesus, please help more people be baptized through water and the Spirit

Listen

Reflection: The ideal is for people to be baptised with water, but in fact the majority of people are baptised "by desire" ... by living a good life and caring for the poor (c.f. Mt 25.40)

On my prison visits yesterday I met two men named "David" ... on March 1, the Feast of St David of Wales! (... many stories about him need to be "taken with a grain of salt"). In fact, most people called "David" associate with the David of the Bible.

Ecclesiastes 3: There's a time and a season for everything: A time for giving birth, a time for dying. A time for tears and mourning, a time for laughter and dancing. A time for embracing, a time to refrain from embracing. A time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.
Dear Lord, please help me to do the right thing at the right time

My recording of this reading

Psalm 133: How good and how pleasant it is when people live in unity. It is like precious oil upon the head, running down upon the beard. It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the heights of Zion. For there the Lord gives his blessing, life for ever.
Dear Lord, please help all the peoples of the world to live as one family, in unity.

Romans 6.3-11: When we were baptized, two things happened: 1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died. 2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life. This dying and rising means we have died to sin, and risen to a new life. We died to an old life, and  we came back to a new life. We have been re-born, born again
Jesus, please help me leave my old life behind. Help me live a new life with you

Ecclesiastes 1-2: Everything is temporary and passing. What's the use of all our toil? Our life is over in a few days. What's the use of all our toil? The same fate awaits both wise person and fool. Death is always just around the corner.
Dear God, please help me understand the meaning of life.  Help me understand that there is life in heaven after life on earth

My recording of this reading

Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity. Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Romans 5.12-21: Through one man, Adam, the virus of sin entered the world, and sin infected everyone with death. The divine anti-virus of grace is more powerful than any sin virus

John 2.1-11:
Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus
Jesus,  help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Reflection: Jesus would have been aware of the wine shortage, but if his mother had not asked his help he would not have helped .... a lesson for prayer .... prayer makes a difference, just like the requests of children produce action by parents

Proverbs 30-31: Every word of God is true and of great value. Do not change or misinterpret God's words. Do not give way to sexual excess. Do not give way to drunkenness. Be the voice of the poor, the unwanted.
Uphold the rights of the needy.
Happy the man who finds a good wife. She is far beyond the price of pearls. She looks after her household with care. She works diligently for her family. She holds out her hand to the poor. She opens her arms to the needy. Charm is deceitful, and beauty empty. The woman who is wise is the one to praise.

Lord, thank you for all the wisdom in the Book of Proverbs!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!
Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

Romans 5.1-5: By faith and through Jesus we can live in the friendship of God. We look forward to heaven and an end to all suffering. In the meantime our suffering teaches us patience. Patience produces perseverance. Perseverance produces hope. This hope is not imaginary. It's real, since the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us
Jesus, through your Holy Spirit, please give me more hope

John 1.35-51:
John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God. Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus met  Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth"
