Tues March 26

Yesterday in the mail I received a most moving letter from an African man facing 10 years in prison for bringing drugs to HK - here (March 22). Last year I was able to send some money to his wife to help pay for school fees for their three children

c.f. readings for Tues of Holy Week

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord said to me: "I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth"
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me. Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you
 Recording

Mark 14.66-72: Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial. A young woman in the courtyard of the place  said to him "You were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth". Peter replied "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the place, where the woman saw him again and said to people around her "This man is one of them". Peter denied it. Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent". Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". Peter then wept loudly
Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

Listen

Luke 22.63-65: The men who were guarding Jesus mocked him and beat him. They blindfolded him. "Since you are a prophet", they said, "tell us who hit you just then". And they continued heaping insults on him.
Jesus, please stop me from making offensive fun of other people

 Recording

Luke 22.66 - 23.12: At daybreak there was a meeting of the religious leaders. Jesus was brought before them. They asked him "Are you the Son of God?". He replied "Yes". They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the Roman governor, Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said "I find no case against him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent him back to Pilate.
Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before Herod and before Pilate, please help all prisoners who are on trial today

Reflection on the above readings: When someone makes fun of us, we react, internally if not externally. Being made fun of is not a pleasant experience. And most of us have to admit to having made fun of others. But human hurt feelings pale into insignificance when compared with what Jesus must have felt. The Creator of the Universe being ridiculed by creatures. A loving and kind parent being ridiculed by a son or daughter .... only a faint image of what happened 2,000 years ago this week.

Isaiah 7:
A foreign king and his army attacked Jerusalem. The king of Judah and his people were full of fear. God told Isaiah to say to the king of Judah: "Keep calm, have no fear. You will not be defeated. The Lord himself gives you a sign of his protection: a maiden is with child and will give birth to a son whom she will call God-with-us."
Lord,  please help me understand how you are God-with-me every day

Psalm 40: You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I. In the scroll of the book it stands written that I should do your will. My God, I delight in your law in the depth of my heart. Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly. My lips I have not sealed, you know it, O Lord. I have not hidden your justice in my heart, but declared your faithful help. I have not hidden your love and your truth from the great assembly.
Here I am, Lord. I come to do your will

Luke 1.26-38 (a) In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"
Recording

Luke 1.26-38 (b) The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

c.f. readings for Palm Sunday

Isaiah 50: The Lord has opened my ear to hear his message. The Lord has given me words to proclaim his message. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard. I did not protect my face from insult and spittle. I set my face like flint. The Lord will help me.
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe.

Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

 Listen

Philippians 2.6-11: O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. Though you were God in state divine you did not cling to what you were. No, you shed your glory's shine so as to live just like a slave. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. You came on earth in human form and you shared our troubled life. A humbler man there never was, even in death obedient. Yes, Lord, death upon a cross, yes, upon a cross.

Therefore are you raised on high and you have the name of names. At that name should bend the knee and tongue confess:  Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. To the glory of God the Father

 Recording

Luke 19.28-40When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples spread their clothes on the road, and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord, we praise and love you

Yesterday morning I was at West Kowloon Court for a "mention" hearing of one of the bail cases for whom I am surety. Next week I'm hoping to apply for a few more people to get bail. A lot of work, but most worthwhile.

Yesterday afternoon two teachers and about 20 students from Bishop Walsh Primary School came to Temple Street for sharings at the MercyHK Canteen and Dr Jesus Centre. Each student kindly brought a food gift for the homeless people helped by MercyHK.

Sirach 8-9: Do not look down on an old person. Old age is our common destiny. Do not discuss your affairs with everyone you meet. Be careful when you ask advice. Do not look lustfully at a woman. Do not stare at the beauty which belongs to someone else.
Lord, please help me control my tongue and my eyes

My recording of this reading

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace
Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

Listen

Romans 15.15-33: The reason I have written to you is to encourage you in your faith.  This is my job from God. He has appointed me as a priest of Jesus Christ. John 7.37-39: During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly  in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty, come to me. Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified
Holy Spirit, flowing from the heart of Jesus, please increase your influence in my life

Sirach 6-7: Let your acquaintances be many, but your advisers one in a thousand. A faithful friend is a sure shelter. People who love and honor the Lord, will find a faithful friend. From your youngest days, seek wisdom. If you love listening, you will find wisdom. Stretch out your hand to help poor people. Console people who are sad. Visit the sick. In everything you do, remember the purpose of life and you will avoid evil.
Dear Lord, please help young people to seek wisdom

Psalm 3: When people make fun of me for believing in you, Lord, I deeply remember how you are my help and my shield. Sirach 4-5: Water puts out a fire. Almsgiving makes up for sins. Do not refuse to help a poor person. Some people are all talk and no action. Some people are lions at home but sheep in society. John 6.59-69:

We believe you are the Holy One of God".

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God. Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's commandments, in private as well as in public. Keep the commandment to honor your parents. Respect for your father will atone for your sins. Honor for your mother will gain you blessings. Support your father in his old age. Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness. Do not despise him in your health and strength. Be gentle in the way you live your life. The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave.
Dear God, please help me always respect and honor my parents
