Sirach
10-11: As the magistrate is, so will his officials
be.
As the governor is, so will be the inhabitants of his city. What has dust and ashes to pride itself on?
A king today is a corpse tomorrow. Do not praise a person for good looks,
nor dislike anyone for appearance. Small among winged creatures is the
bee,
but nothing is sweeter than her honey.
Lord, please give our world
good leaders
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O
Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your
help. Through the greatness of your love, I have
access to your friendship. I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go.
It is you, Lord, who bless good people.
You surround them with favors, as with a shield.

Romans
16.1-25: Please welcome our friend Phoebe,
a deaconess
in the church at Cenchrea.
She has helped many people, including myself. Greetings to all my friends in Rome,
especially Prisca and Aquila,
my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked death to save my life. Be careful of people whose teaching is
suspect. Avoid them. Glory to him who is able to give you strength
to live according to the Good News
Jesus, help me live according to your Good
News.
Thank you for the beautiful letter to the Romans

John
7.32, 45, 46:
The religious leaders sent the Temple police
to arrest Jesus. When the police returned to the leaders
without Jesus,
the leaders asked "Why didn't you arrest him?" The police replied
"There has never been anyone who has spoken like him"
Jesus, in the history of the world, there has
never been anyone who has spoken about goodness and truth like you

Isaiah 7: A foreign king and
his army attacked Jerusalem. The king of Judah and his
people were full of fear. God told Isaiah to say to the king of Judah:
"Keep calm, have no fear. You will not be defeated. The Lord himself gives
you a sign of his protection: a
maiden is with child and will give birth to a son whom
she will call God-with-us."
Lord, please help me understand how you are God-with-me every day

Psalm
40: You do not ask for
sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and
victim. Instead, here am I. In the scroll of the book it
stands written that I should do your will. My God, I delight in your law
in the depth of my heart. Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly.
My lips I have not sealed, you know it, O Lord. I have not hidden your justice
in my heart, but declared your faithful help. I have not hidden your love and
your truth from the great assembly.
Here I am, Lord. I come to do your will

Luke
1.26-38 (a) In the sixth
month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of
Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named
Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed
by God. You
are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great
and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can
this happen since I am a virgin?"

Luke
1.26-38 (b) The angel
replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High
will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old
age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month". "I am the
handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let
what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.

c.f. readings for Easter 2
Acts
2.37-47: The
crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we
do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit".
That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the
teaching of the apostles, to a
life of sharing and caring, to the
Breaking of Bread, and to prayer.
Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on
everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group.
Jesus,
please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life

Psalm
118: Give
thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel
say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say:
"His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to
trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in
princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord
is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has
triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and
recount all his deeds. The
stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is
the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We
rejoice and are glad.

Peter 1.3-9: Blessed
be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In his great mercy, he has made us
his children. He has prepared a place in heaven for us to live with him forever.
This is a cause of great joy for you, even though life in this world has many
trials. You
did not see Jesus, yet you love him, and you believe in him. Faith gives
you confidence to look forward to the salvation of your souls.
Jesus, I have never seen you with my physical eyes, but I love you and believe

John
20.21-29: That
same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had
gathered, for fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before
them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his
side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he
breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the
12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had
seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I
refuse to believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the same
house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again
appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he
said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but
believe". Thomas replied "My
Lord and my God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see
me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe".
Jesus, my Lord and my
God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

Yesterday afternoon as I waited for about an hour to be served at
a local bank ... I felt very sorry for all the elderly people waiting to be
served (...seated, it must be said) .... and I began thinking could a community
bank or credit union be formed for little people since the big banks are not
really interested in little people?

4.13-22: The
religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John
could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken
place: the crippled man was standing next to Peter and John. The leaders gave
Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus. Peter
and John replied "Which
is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop
proclaiming what we have seen and heard". The leaders released the two
apostles. They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory

21.1-14: Jesus also
appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other
disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught
nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not
recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the
boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on
the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they
returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The
net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread.

8: How
great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the
heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged,

Luke
24.36-49: The
disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself
stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a
ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch
me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I
have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they
were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some
grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then
he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So
you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day
rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins
would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the
Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with
this power from on high"

understand the Bible better

24.13-35: That same
day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of
Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened,
Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him.
When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus
of Nazareth, and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in
our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive".
Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and
resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he
blessed some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he
immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did
not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the
road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to
Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord
has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road,
and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
