Isaiah
13-19: God will punish the world for its evil-doing.
Then peoples' hearts will turn back to their Creator. Then people will no longer worship idols made
by human hands.
Instead, people will look towards their Creator. The nations will be converted and know the
Lord.
Egypt and Assyria will be blessed like Israel. The Lord will give his blessing in these
words:
"Blessed be my people Egypt,
blessed be Assyria my creation,
and blessed be Israel my heritage".
Lord, please help all Middle
East countries,
especially Israel, Egypt, Iran and Iraq, to be friends
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he
stooped down to me.
He heard my cry. He saved me from distress.
He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you
have helped me.
They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in
your law.
You do not want external offerings.
You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my
love. You deserve all my love

Corinthians 8.9 - 9.7:
Remember how generous the Lord Jesus
was.
He was rich, but he became poor for our sake, to make us rich. So we also should help people who are poor. If
we have extra
we should help people who don't have enough. Maybe some day, the same poor people will be
rich,
and we will be poor, and they will help us. And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver
Jesus, help me do more to help poor
people

John
15.1-8:
At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the
gardener. Each branch in me
that bears no fruit, he cuts off. Each branch that does bear fruit, he
prunes to make it bear even more fruit. As a branch cannot bear fruit by itself, but
must remain part of the vine, so you can't bear fruit unless you remain
in me. Cut off from me, you can do nothing. If you remain in me, and my words are alive in
your heart, you can ask for any good thing and you will get it. It is to the glory of my Father that you
should bear much fruit"
Jesus, please help me stay close to you. Help me bear
much fruit
Listen

Reflection: There's lot of material written and spoken about types of "fruit" but the older I get the more I am convinced that the most important type of fruit is helping needy people

10-12: Woe to legislators who issue unjust laws,

when unjust legislators will answer to the Lord. The Lord will send a good and just king
to rescue the poor A shoot will spring from the stock of Jesse,

Acts
10.1-48: Cornelius
was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea. He and his household
prayed, loved God, and helped the local people. One morning Cornelius had a
vision that Peter would visit him. In another town, Peter was instructed by the
Lord to visit Cornelius. Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his
household. While Peter was speaking, the
Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers who had
accompanied Peter were astonished
that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people
Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples everywhere!
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
98: Sing a new song to the
Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord
has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has
remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the
earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring
out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let
the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the
rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the
Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice
and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

God is love. Anyone who lives in love, lives in God, and God lives in him
Jesus, you are love itself. May I live in your love

15.9-13: At the meal,
Jesus said to his disciples "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved

lay down you life for your friends".

9: The people that walked in darkness has seen a

On those who live in a land of deep shadow, a light has shone. For the yoke that was weighing on them,

2 Corinthians
4.8 -5.1: We are in difficulties on all sides, but never
cornered.
We see no answer to our problems, but never despair.
Even though our bodies are aging and decaying,
our hearts are renewed day by day. Our troubles seem great now, but they don't
stand comparison with the eternal glory coming soon. When the temporary tent that we live in here on
earth is folded up,
we will move to an everlasting house built by God for us in heaven

so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you love me, you
will keep my commandments. I will ask the Father and he will give you

Last night my No. 11 bus from Jordan to Notre Dame College in
Kowloon City for an O.M.I. gathering was my first experience of this glorious,
smooth, wonderful vehicle!
When
I came to HK on a Qantas flight from Brisbane on January 14, 1985, sitting next
to me was a young student returning to HK after studying a computer course in
Australia. Turned out he was also a past student of Notre Dame O.M.I. College in
HK! ...which I took as a sign from Heaven that my going to HK would be blessed.
Well, yesterday the same young student, now aged about 60, visited Temple Street
and joined in the usual Thursday lunch for homeless people at the Dr Jesus
Centre! Thank you Horace for the visit .... and memories of 1985 (... and also
memories of 1990 when I visited you and your dear wife at your Melbourne home
where you have lived now for the past 30 years)!

34:
I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise always on my lips.
In the Lord my soul shall make its boast,
the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us
praise his name.
I sought the Lord and he answered me.
From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those
who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

c.f. readings for St Joseph the Worker (For International Labor Day)
Genesis
1-2: God made the
world. God made the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole
universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God
made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God
made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in
his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the
earth." God saw all that
he had made, and all of it was good, very good.
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful
world!
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our
refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world
existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are
like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our
life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong.
Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the
morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the
work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life,
that we may live our lives more wisely
Recording

Colossians
3.18 - 4.1: Wives
and husbands, understand and support each other. Children, be obedient to your
parents. Parents, treat your children fairly or else they will rebel. Slaves, be
obedient and respectful to your owners. Offer up your
work to the Lord, our
Heavenly Owner. Owners, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember your Heavenly
Owner.
Jesus, help families to live together in
harmony
Recording

Matthew
13.53-58: One day Jesus went to Nazareth,
his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people. But the
local people would not accept him. They said "Where did he get such
wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a
carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary. His brothers are
James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too. He's nobody
special." Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own
country and his own house". And he did not work many miracles there because
of their lack of faith.
Jesus, please give me more faith in you .... and
don't let me reject people
Recording
Reflection on the above readings: On this International Workers/Labor Day, may the example of the carpenter whom Jesus called "father" help us to offer up our work as a prayer to the Lord ... like a woman who used to pray "Jesus, I don't really like washing and ironing, but I offer it up as a prayer asking that you would keep my family safe". Let us also pray for the tens of millions of workers who have no jobs
