Hello from St Paul's Retreat Centre in Sheung Shui where I am enjoying the annual O.M.I. retreat. Our speaker is Fr Lawrence from Zambia
To prepare for Pentecost (May
19) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this week:
The seal is
a symbol close to that of anointing. "The Father has set his seal"
on Christ and also seals us
in him. Because this seal indicates
the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, the image of the seal (sphragis)
has been used in some theological traditions to express the indelible
"character" imprinted by these three unrepeatable sacraments. CCC

In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day: Come
Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

1.15-26 (for
Feast of St Matthias): During
these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples: "As you know,
Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now choose someone to take
Judas' place, someone who has been with us since the time when John was
baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and Matthias.
After prayer was offered, Matthias was
chosen. He was listed as one of the 12 apostles.

18.19-27:
The main religious leader interrogated
Jesus about his teaching. Jesus told him "I have spoken openly in
prayer halls and in the Temple. I have said nothing in secret. The people
can tell you what I said". At these words, one of the guards slapped
Jesus in the face, saying "Don't speak to the leader like that".
Jesus replied "If I said something wrong, point it
out. But if there was nothing wrong with my words, why did you hit
me?" Meanwhile Peter was outside in the courtyard,
keeping warm by a fire. Three times he was asked by different people if he
was a disciple of Jesus. Three times he replied "I am not".
After his third denial, a rooster crowed

Reflection: While under arrest Jesus must have thought about escape/way out ...as does everyone when arrested. And Jesus had the power to escape, as he had done previously when people wanted to kill him. But this time was different ...

To prepare for Pentecost (May 19), let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day
this week:
Cloud and
light. These two images occur together
in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. In the theophanies of the Old
Testament, the cloud,
now obscure, now luminous, reveals the living and saving God, while veiling the
transcendence of his glory - with Moses on Mount Sinai, at the tent of meeting,
and during the wandering in the desert, and with Solomon at the dedication of
the Temple. In the Holy Spirit, Christ fulfills these figures. The Spirit comes
upon the Virgin Mary and "overshadows"
her, so that she might conceive and give birth to Jesus. On the mountain of
Transfiguration, the Spirit in the "cloud came
and overshadowed" Jesus, Moses and Elijah, Peter, James and John, and
"a voice came out of the
cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!' Finally, the
cloud took Jesus out of the sight of the disciples. (CCC
697)

49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable,
with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and
succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad
people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom.
Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not
forget God and his laws.

Reflection: Being arrested is not a pleasant experience ... in fact it is a fearful experience. Jesus must have felt great fear ...knowing that arrest for him was to be followed by crucifixion. And we note how he secured the non-arrest of his friends .... he was "thinking of others" even at a time of great fear and danger for himself

Reflection on the above readings: God the Son became a baby in Mary's womb when the Holy Spirit "overshadowed" Mary .... "shadow" ... cloud. Jesus went back to Heaven "when a cloud took him from their sight"... and he will come in the same way. Not Cathay Pacific or Qantas ... Jesus travelled by Holy Spirit Airways!

Yesterday
a good friend (who will remain anonymous) made everyone happy at the cancer
patients prayer meeting at the Dr Jesus Centre. We had been talking about the
Mon and Thurs gatherings for homeless people at the centre ....then ...when the
friend saw a photo of 18 priests and deacons at the same centre last Wednesday
for a deanery meeting ...said "are they homeless people too?"!
