Readings are from Simple Bible

Jeremiah 21-23: Jerusalem was under siege by the Chaldaeans. The Lord told Jeremiah to tell the leaders of Jerusalem to surrender. But the leaders of Jerusalem did not obey Jeremiah's words. So the Lord got Jeremiah to say these words: "Woe to the shepherds who allow my sheep to be scattered and killed. You have not taken care of my sheep. Therefore I will raise up a leader who will be wise and just. He will be a good shepherd of my people."
Lord, please help our leaders to be good shepherds

My recording of this reading

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Listen

Ephesians 6.10-17: To resist the Devil's tactics, put on God's armor:
- the belt of truth
- the breastplate of integrity
- the shoes of eagerness to spread
  the Good News of peace
- the shield of faith
- the helmet of salvation
- the sword of God's word

Jesus, help me put on these six pieces of armor

Listen

Matthew 10.17-42: Jesus said to his apostles "Because you follow me and speak my message, therefore you will be arrested and put in prison. But don't worry about what to say for your defence. What to say will be given you by the Holy Spirit. Boldly proclaim my message and do not be afraid of persecution. Take up your cross and follow me. Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me
is not worthy of me."

Jesus, please give me more courage

Jeremiah 18-20: Some officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his message any more. "Come on," they said, "let us make a case against him." Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are plotting against me. Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God: "You have seduced me, Lord. You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people. This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more. But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just had to speak your message."
Lord,  please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

My recording of this reading

Psalm 96:
O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens. Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor
Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

Listen

Ephesians 6.1-9Children, be obedient to your parents. Parents, never drive your children to resentment. Slaves, respect your employers. Employers, treat your workers fairly
Jesus, please help me treat everyone with respect

Listen

Matthew 10.1-16: Many men followed Jesus as "fishers of men", as "disciples". Jesus chose 12 of them and called them "apostles": Peter and his brother Andrew; Zebedees' sons James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus, Simon and Judas. Jesus sent them to prepare his way by visiting the places he would go. He gave them power to cast out evil spirits and to heal all kinds of sicknesses. He said to them: Proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near. Cure the sick. Raise the dead. Cleanse lepers. Cast out devils.
Jesus, please help all Christians to be apostles and fishers of people

c.f. readings for Sunday 11

Ezekiel 17: The Lord says this: "From the top of the cedar, from the highest branch I will take a shoot and plant it myself on a very high mountain. I will plant it on the high mountain of Israel. It will sprout branches and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Every kind of bird will live beneath it, every winged creature rest in the shade of its branches. And every tree of the field will learn that I, the Lord, am the one who stunts tall trees and makes the low ones grow, who withers green trees and makes the withered green. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do it."

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

 Listen

2 Corinthians 5: We are always full of confidence when we remember that to live in the body means to be exiled from the Lord, going as we do by faith and not by sight, we are full of confidence, I say, and actually want to be exiled from the body and make our home with the Lord. Whether we are living in the body or exiled from it, we are intent on pleasing him. For all the truth about us will be brought out in the law court of Christ, and each of us will get what he deserves for the things he did in the body, good or bad.

Mark 4: Jesus said to the crowds: "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come."  He also said, "What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade."

Mt13.32a.jpg (122943 bytes)

Reflection on the above readings:  Jesus said his kingdom, his tree, would grow exponentially .... so that today there is a church/branch (pun intended) in almost every part of most countries in the world  . ... fulfilling the prophecy of Ezekiel

Jeremiah 18: The Lord told Jeremiah to go to the house of the potter. At the potter's house, Jeremiah watched the potter working. Sometimes a vessel he was making wasn't shaped properly. So the potter would take the clay and start again and shape the clay into a new vessel. Then the Lord told Jeremiah: "The House of Israel is clay, I am  the potter. I  keep on trying to form Israel into a holy nation."
Lord, you are the potter, we are the clay - the work of your hands. Please mould us into what you want us to become

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Listen

Ephesians 5.21-33: In your families, treat each other as Christ wants you to: Wives, in your husbands see Christ the head of the Church. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loves the Church. When men and women get married, they become one body. This sacred action helps us understand the relationship between Christ and the Church
Jesus, please help husbands and wives to love each other the way you love the Church

Matthew 9.35-37: Jesus went to many towns and villages. In the local prayer halls he taught people the Good News of God's kingdom. He healed all sorts of diseases and sicknesses. He felt sorry for the ordinary people because they were like sheep without a shepherd - leaderless, exploited, and feeling hopeless. He said to his friends: "So many people don't have good leaders. Pray to God to send good leaders".
Jesus, many countries have bad leaders. Please help every country to have good leaders

Reflection: The biggest problem in our troubled world is not poverty or climate change or warfare .... but a lack of good leaders. Without good leadership, the world's problems cannot be solved

Jeremiah 16-17: The Lord will bring back Israel's exiles, back to the land he gave to our ancestors. Lord, my strength, my stronghold, all the nations will come to you and acknowledge that you alone are God in all the earth.
Let all the peoples praise you, O God, let all the peoples praise you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 94: O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul.

Ephesians 5.10-20: Try to discover what the Lord wants of you. Have nothing to do with the futile works of darkness. Wake up from your sleep, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Be very careful about the sort of life you live. Follow your enlightened mind, not your unruly passions. Avoid drunkenness. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Sing prayer songs when you are together, and when you're by yourself, keep on singing to the Lord in your heart, always giving thanks to God

Jeremiah 15: Alas, my mother, for you gave me birth to be a man of strife and dissension for everyone. I neither lend nor borrow, yet everyone curses me. Lord, remember how I suffer insult for your sake. When I heard your word, I devoured it. Your word was my delight and the joy of my heart for you called me to speak your word.
Lord, please increase my love for your word, my love for the Bible

My recording of this reading

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Ephesians 5.1-4: Follow Christ by loving as he loved us. Among you there must be not even a mention of promiscuity or impurity in any of its forms. There must be no coarseness, or salacious talk and jokes  - all this is wrong for you

Matthew 9.18-26:
A prayer hall official came to Jesus and said "My daughter has just died. Please come and lay your hand on her and she will come back to life". As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home, a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing. The woman had said to herself "If I can even touch his clothing, I will be healed". Jesus knew what she was doing and said to her "My daughter, your faith has healed you". Instantly she was healed.

When Jesus arrived at the official's house he saw a crowd of people crying loudly. Jesus said to them "Get out of the house. The little girl is asleep, not dead".  The crowd laughed at Jesus. After the crowd had gone outside, Jesus went inside. He took the little girl by the hand, and she stood up. News of what had happened spread all round the district.
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal the sick and raise the dead

Jeremiah 12-14:  Lord, you are in our midst, we are called by your name. Please give us help and strength in this time of trouble. Wherever I go I see sadness and despair. Our land has been invaded by the foreign soldier. If I go into the countryside, I see men killed by the sword. If I go into the city, I see people sick with hunger. O God, you are our hope. Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try to find a decent job. Guard against foul talk. Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down. Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper.
