Tues June 25

Hello from St Paul's Retreat Centre in Sheung Shui where I am attending the monthly O.M.I. meeting. I arrived yesterday afternoon after spending 4 hours at nearby Lo Wu women's prison. Today after the meeting ends at lunch time I hope to go back to Lo Wu for a few more hours. Yesterday I met several prospective candidates for working at MercyHK's canteen in Temple Street (which employ only ex-inmates!) and I also saw some some women who received a 3 month reduction of sentence after taking part in Voice For Prisoners anti-drug campaign

Jeremiah 36: God told Jeremiah to write down all the messages he had spoken for God. So Jeremiah got Baruch to make a written record of all his messages. Baruch wrote the messages on a scroll. Some good officials took the scroll to the king to read. The officials hoped the king would obey the words of the scroll. The king had the scroll read aloud for him. As each section was read, the king used a knife to cut off the section, and then threw the section into a fire. Eventually the whole scroll was burnt. The king then issued an order for Jeremiah to be arrested. God protected Jeremiah and did not allow him to be arrested for the time being. God also told Jeremiah to have another scroll made.
Lord, please move world leaders' hearts to be open to your message of justice and peace and love
My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.
Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Philippians 2.5-11: O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you.

Though you were God in state divine you did not cling to what you were. No, you shed your glory's shine so as to live just like a slave.

O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you.

You came on earth in human form and you shared our troubled life. A humbler man there never was,
even in death obedient

Yes, Lord, death upon a cross, yes, upon a cross

Therefore are you raised on high and you have the name of names. At that name should bend the knee and tongue confess:  Jesus Christ is LORD.
And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD.
And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD.
To the glory of God the Father

Listen to this reading as a song

Matthew 12.46-50One day when Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people inside a house, his mother and brothers arrived at the house. From outside the house they sent a message to say
they would like to speak with him. When Jesus heard they were there, he said "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" Then holding out his hand towards his disciples he said "Here are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven, that person is my brother and sister and mother."

Brother Jesus,  please help me do the will of your Father in heaven

c.f. Readings for Birthday of John the Baptist

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me: 'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".
Lord, please help me understand how you loved me even before I was born.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

 Listen

Acts 13: Paul said: God deposed Saul and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, "I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose." To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal." "My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you.

Luke 1.67-80: When John was named, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry.
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

Reflection on the above readings: Why June 24 for John the Baptist? Because Jesus was conceived in the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy .... so John was born 6 months (approximately) before Jesus ... and 6 months before Dec 25 is June 24. Let's think of the baby Baptist if we happen to see any babies today!

c.f. readings for Sunday 12

Job 38: 1, 8-11: From the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer. He said: "Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous out of the womb; when I wrapped it in a robe of mist  and made black clouds its swaddling bands; when I marked the bounds it was not to cross, and made it fast with a bolted gate? Come thus far, I said, and no farther: here your proud waves shall break"

Lord, the sea belongs to you, for you made it
My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: Some sailed to the sea in ships to trade on the mighty waters. These men have seen the Lord’s deeds, the wonders he does in the deep. For he spoke; he summoned the gale, tossing the waves of the sea up to heaven and back into the deep; their souls melted away in their distress. Then they cried to the Lord in their need, and he rescued them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper. All the waves of the sea were hushed

Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love
Recording

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"

- from  How Great Thou Art

Recording

Mark 4.35-41: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. A sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up  and said "Save us, Lord, we are sinking". Jesus stood up, and ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. Jesus' friends said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Jesus, please calm the storms in my life, my family, our world

Jeremiah 33-35: Most of the people and their leaders ignored God's message
delivered by Jeremiah. But one group listened to Jeremiah and obeyed God's message:
that group was the nomad clan of Rechabites. At God's command Jeremiah invited them to a meal  near the Temple and invited them to drink wine. But they replied that they had been told by God
never to own property or build houses or be farmers or drink wine. Jeremiah then spoke to the people watching the Rechabites: "See how this clan is obedient to the message of the Lord, unlike most of the people and its leaders who ignore God. Because this clan has been faithful and obedient, therefore it will  always be blessed by the Lord".

Lord, please help me be faithful to you,  like the Rechabites

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Philippians 1.27-2.4: Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the Good News of Christ. Be united in your convictions, and united in your love. There must be no competition among you, no conceit. Everyone should be self-effacing. Always regard others as better than yourself. Put others interests before your own
Jesus, help me say "no" to anything unworthy of your Good News

Matthew 12.9-14: On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the hall. Some religious leaders asked Jesus, to trap him, "Is it lawful to heal a man on the Sabbath day?" (The leaders taught that no "work" could be done on the Sabbath). Jesus replied: "If one of your sheep fell down a hole on the Sabbath, wouldn't you lift it out? A man is more important than a sheep.
Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand
"Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The religious leaders left the prayer hall
and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus.

Jesus, please stop bad religious leaders from misleading people

Reflection: At every time and place of "godlessness" in world history, there is usually a small group of faithful people ... like the Rechabites in today's first reading ... like Noah and family in the Book of Genesis

A new documentary "Fault lines, the night won't end - Biden's war on Gaza - Part 2" has compelling details about Biden's complicity in Israel's Gaza genocide. I saw the program two days ago, but can't find a link to it now. I will try to find link in the next few days.

In my 51 years as a priest, and in my 20 or so years of making websites, there is a term I have never once used in my sermons or posts. That term came to mind a few nights ago when I thought about how outright lies are increasingly being propagated by certain world figures and certain international media. Such personified/institutionalised lying brings to mind a terrible figure in the last book of the Bible  ... the Anti-Christ ... a servant of The Father of Lies (Satan). When most statements that come out of a person's mouth or from a media outlet are lies, that person/media is doing Anti-Christ work. Then I Googled "one particular person's name and anti-christ" and found many articles about this very idea.

Every Tuesday morning during breakfast I watch a 15 min program from Australia (shown live on TV on Monday night). This program exposes dishonesty and lies in the Australian media: Media Watch

Jeremiah 32: Jerusalem was about to be captured by the Chaldaeans. But God  promised that Jerusalem would recover its freedom. As a sign that Jerusalem would be free again, God told Jeremiah to buy a field. People thought Jeremiah was crazy. But through this action Jeremiah delivered God's message: This city and this land are now a waste, but soon people will again buy land and build homes
in freedom and safety.

Lord, when things get really bad, please increase our trust in you that you will turn things around in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love.
He is faithful from age to age.

Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Listen

Philippians 1.13-25: My chains have become famous and have given courage to many other believers. Many others are now becoming more daring in announcing the Message without fear. I hope and trust that I will always have courage for Christ to be glorified in my body, whether by my life or by my death. My heart wants to go two ways. One part wants to depart this world  and live for ever with Christ in heaven. The other part wants to stay in this world to help more people to know the Lord
Jesus, give me courage in spreading the Good News

Matthew 12.1-8: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry. They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees.  So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. Go and learn the meaning of these words 'What I want is mercy, not superficial external offerings'. I am Master of the Sabbath."
Jesus, Master of the Sabbath, please help me understand that love is more important than law

Reflection: "I am Master of the Sabbath" is at least a very strong hint that Jesus is claiming to be God

At last night's regular meeting for Nepal drug addicts at the Dr Jesus Centre, I learnt that the 8 men at the meeting have been told by the authorities to move out from under a bridge where they have been living/sleeping for a long time now. They have to move by 24/6. My prayer for a miracle is that they will agree to go to a drug treatment centre for a 6 month holiday to end at Christmas!

Jeremiah 24-29: For 23 years Jeremiah spoke the message of the Lord, calling on people to do good and turn away from evil. But the people, especially the leaders, refused to listen to Jeremiah. They eventually arrested Jeremiah and planned to kill him. Jeremiah also sent a message to the exiles in Babylon. But they too refused his message.

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Matthew 11.1-19:
John the Baptist sent some of his friends to ask Jesus "Are you the promised Anointed One?" Jesus replied "Tell John what you hear and see: blind people see, lame people walk, lepers are healed". I eat well and I drink wine and people call me a glutton and a drunkard."
Jesus, please help me be someone who is easy to live with, someone who is not hard to please
