Tues July 2

There were 16 of us on the hike yesterday to Big Wave Bay on HK Island ... including 15 month old Patricia who had her very first swim in the sea. Weather was hot and we used our umbrellas a few times for the sun ...not once needed for rain ...and for most of the time (including our time in the water) there were clouds .... and sometimes a lovely breeze. After our swim we had a beautiful meal at a restaurant on the beach ... most of us having fish and chips. Then mini-bus back to the MTR for trip back to Jordan. Thank you Jesus for another safe and enjoyable hike!

Baruch 3-4: Listen, Israel, to commands that bring life and peace. Remember all that God has taught us. As by your will you strayed away from God, so now turn back and search for him ten times as hard.
Lord, please help us not to forget you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.

Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.

Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.

Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.

Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

Philippians 4.4-9: I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord. Let your tolerance be evident to everyone. If there is anything you need, with prayer and thanksgiving ask God for it. Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that is worthwhile. Then the God of peace will be with you
Jesus, please fill my mind with good things

Matthew 14.1-12: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded. John's disciples came and buried the body.
Jesus, please give the world good leaders, and protect people from bad leaders like Herod

Baruch 1-2: The message of Baruch, written in Babylon for the exiles living there,
and sent to Jerusalem for the people still there: Let us pray that our genuine service for the king of Babylon will win his favor and protection. To us belongs a look of shame, because we have not listened to the message of the Lord our God. Lord, please listen to our prayer. Rescue us from exile and humiliation.
Dear God, please help all exiles return to their homeland

My recording of this reading

Psalm 106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt,
they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.

O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Pilippians 3.20 - 4.1: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

Matthew 13.53-58: One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people. But the local people would not accept him.  They said "Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary. His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too. He's nobody special." Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house". And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Jesus, please give me more faith in you .... and don't let me reject people

Listen

Reflection:  "A prophet is despised in his own country" is similar to the Chinese saying "local ginger is not hot"

c.f. readings for Sunday 13

Wisdom 1.13-24: Death was not God's doing, he takes no pleasure in the extinction of the living. To be - for this he created all; the world's created things have health in them, in them no fatal poison can be found, and Hades holds no power on earth; for virtue is undying. Yet God did make man imperishable, he made him in the image of his own nature; it was the devil's envy that brought death into the world, as those who are his partners will discover.

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

2 Corinthians 8-9: Remember how generous the Lord Jesus was. He was rich, but he became poor for our sake, to make us rich. So we also should help people who are poor. If we have extra, we should help people who don't have enough. Maybe some day, the same poor people will be rich, and we will be poor, and they will help us. And don't forget, God loves a cheerful giver
Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

Mark 5.21-43: A prayer hall official, Jairus, fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her and save her life". While Jesus was on the way to Jairus' home, people arrived and told Jairus "Your daughter is dead. No need to trouble the Master any further". Jesus heard this and said to Jairus "Do not be afraid. Just have faith". Jesus allowed only Peter, James and John to go with him. At Jairus' home, everyone was weeping and wailing. Jesus said to them "Why all this crying? The child is not dead, but asleep". Everyone laughed at him. So he got them all to leave. Then taking the girl's parents and his 3 companions, he went to the place where the child was lying. Taking the girl by the hand he said to her "Little girl, I tell you to get up". The little girl got up at once.  She was 12 years old.
Jesus, please give us more faith to pray for the sick .... even for children who have died!

c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

2 Timothy 4.6-8:
As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life.
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Recording

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God,  please help the church to continue your work on earth

Lamentations 1-5: The roads to Zion are in mourning. No one comes to her festivals now. Jerusalem is a captured city, a city of ruins. All you who pass this way, look and see. Is there any sorrow like mine? My eyes are wasted away from crying as I see children dying of starvation. Yet deep in my heart there is hope that the Lord will rescue us from this calamity which our sins have caused. The favors of the Lord are not just something of the past. His kindness is for the present, even in times of despair. Every morning there are signs of his kindness, and so I will continue to hope in him for help. Lord, forgive us for abandoning you. Do not abandon us.
Lord, especially when I'm in trouble, please help me to keep trusting in you for help

My recording of this reading

Psalm 105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples. O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength. Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now

Jesus, please help me keep running each day!

Matthew 13: Jesus said to the people: The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed. It's the smallest of all seeds. But it becomes a big bush, then a big tree that the birds live in. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast which leavens flour. The kingdom of heaven is like  treasure in a field. Someone finds it, then sells all they have to buy the field. The kingdom of heaven is like a fishing net that catches all sorts of fish. Good fish are put in a basket. Useless fish are thrown away. So at the end of time, bad people will be thrown into hell.
Jesus, may your kingdom come, your will be done

Jeremiah 46-52: Jeremiah predicted that the powerful nations involved in Israel's capture would all fall: the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites, the Babylonians and others. Jeremiah also reminded Israel to rely on the help of the Lord more than the help of other nations: "Our redeemer is strong. The Lord is his name. He will bring peace to the world".
Lord, help us to rely on you more than on human help

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Philippians 3.7-11: Because of Christ, I have come to consider all my former advantages as a scholar as disadvantages. Nothing is more important than knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. I want to share his sufferings by carrying the Cross with him. This is the way I can hope to receive eternal life

Matthew 13:
Jesus told the people another story: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. An enemy came and sowed weeds in the same field. When the good seed sprouted, so did the weeds. The man's servants asked if they should get rid of the weeds. "No", said the man, "you might damage the good seed if you do that. Let them both grow till harvest time. Then burn the weeds." Then Jesus explained his story: "I am the sower. The field is the world. The good seed stands for people of good will. The weeds stand for people of bad will. The enemy is Satan. At the end of the world, the Son of Man will send his angels to sort out the good and the bad people. Bad people will go to hell.  Good people will go to heaven".
Jesus, please protect good people from bad people

Jeremiah 37-45: Jeremiah was arrested and put into a muddy well to die. But a good official persuaded the king to free Jeremiah. When the Chaldaeans captured Jerusalem, they sent many people to Babylon as exiles. Jeremiah was spared from exile and he kept trying to get the people to accept defeat as God had told them. But most of the people would not listen to Jeremiah, even though all his prophecies about defeat had come true. God protected the good officials who had helped Jeremiah.

Psalm 103:
My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Philippians 2.13-16: It is God who gives us the spiritual energy to be good and to do good. Don't be someone who is always complaining and arguing. Live a life of light in our dark world. May your life of light offer the world the word of life

Matthew 13.1-23:
One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other listen to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.
Jesus, please help me be good seed!
