Tues Aug 13

All over HK, shops closed down, fewer people on the streets, few non-Mainland tourists, people leaving for other countries etc. Maybe it's time to revive an idea I had many years ago ....it could be done in updated way from that described in the following file ....it could be done in the West Kowloon Cultural area (which is so much of a white elephant that some of the land is being sold off) - a Jesus Tower for HK!

The Book Blog:
readings + recordings

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 5-6: Among Adam and Eve's descendants were Seth, Enosh, Kenan and Enoch. Enoch was a special friend of God. Enoch walked with God. Another good man who walked with God was Noah. In Noah's time, most people had forgotten God. Most people did bad things. So God decided to cleanse the earth by a great flood. To save Noah and his family from the flood, God got Noah to build a huge boat for his family and for two animals of every kind. Even though most people forgot God,
Noah believed in God and trusted God.

Dear God, please help me to remember you, to walk with you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145: I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise. His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.

Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

1 Timothy 3.1-15: To want to be a presiding elder is to want to do a noble work. That is why the president must be above reproach: He must not have been married more than once. He must be temperate, discreet, courteous, hospitable, a good teacher, not a heavy drinker, not hot-tempered, but kind and peaceable. He must not be a lover of money. He must be a man who manages his family well and brings up his children well. How could anyone who can't manage his own  family be given responsibility to manage God's family? He should not be a new convert in case he becomes full of pride. The Church of the living God is God's family. The Church is the guardian of the truth
Jesus, please give the Church good leaders

Listen

Matthew 26.69-75: Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial. A young woman in the courtyard of the place said to him "You are a friend of the Galilean". In front of the woman and people around her Peter said "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the place, where another woman said to people around her "This man is a friend of the Galilean". Peter replied strongly "I don't know the man". Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent". Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". Peter went outside and wept loudly.
Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

Listen

Reflection: Jesus chose a married man to be the first Pope. Saint Paul (above) speaks about married men becoming "elders" (priests). But for the past 1,000 years, the Church has virtually excluded married men from the priesthood. And, sadly, it seems that the topic of married men becoming priests has been deleted from the coming October Synod in Rome.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 4: Two of Adam and Eve's sons were Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer. Abel was a shepherd. Cain was jealous of his brother Abel. God said to Cain: "Get control of yourself." But Cain let his anger take over, and he killed Abel. God asked Cain, "Where is Abel?" Cain answered, "How should I know? I'm not his security guard." God replied, "I can hear your brother's blood crying out to me from the ground. That same ground will no longer give you any crops."
Dear God, please help me not to get angry with other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress. He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song, you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the Lord. Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings grown tall and strong from their youth; our daughters graceful as columns, adorned as though for a palace. Let our crops and stock be blessed. May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and honor you every day. Don't let us ever forget your love

Listen

1 Timothy 1.18 - 2.8: Timothy, my son, as I give you advice for practical issues, remember how the church elders prayed over you that you would be a good leader. My first bit of advice is that there should be prayers offered for everyone, especially for kings and others in authority, so that we can live our life of faith in peace and quiet. God wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. There is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and humanity, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for everyone. In every place, I want believers to lift up their hands in reverent prayer
God our Father, through Jesus your Son, I ask a blessing on the leaders of our world, especially the leaders of my own country

Listen

Matthew 26.57-68: The men who arrested Jesus took him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn Jesus to death, even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before their accusations. Then the main leader challenged Jesus: "Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "Yes". The main leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy". The rest of the leaders shouted "He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists.
Jesus, thank you for submitting yourself to insult and spittle for the salvation of the world

 c.f. readings for Sunday 19:

1 Kings 19.4-8: Elijah went into the wilderness, a day's journey, and sitting under a furze bush wished he were dead. "O Lord," he said "I have had enough. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." Then he lay down and went to sleep. But an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." He looked round, and there at his head was a scone baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. But the angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, or the journey will be too long for you." So he got up and ate and drank, and strengthened by that food he walked for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day
 Listen

Ephesians 4.22-32: You must give up your old way of life. You must put aside your old self and its delusions. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution, so that you can follow a way of life based on goodness and truth. From now on, no more lies. Delete anger from your mind at the end of each day. Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try to find a decent job. Guard against foul talk. Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down. Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper. Don't raise your voice to anyone. Don't call people names. Be friends with one another, and kind, forgiving one another as readily as God forgives us in Christ
Jesus, help me put these words into practice

 Listen

John 6.42-51: The people criticized  Jesus saying "We know his father and mother. How can he say he has come down from heaven?" Jesus replied "I am the bread of life. If you eat this bread which has come down from heaven, you will live forever. I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world".
Jesus, living bread come down from heaven, please help me understand how you give your flesh for the life of the world

Sat Aug 10

Yesterday there was a farewell lunch at the MercyHK canteen for Holy Spirit Seminary student Moses Chan who has been helping MercyHK for the past 11 weeks. Thank you, Moses, for all your work! God bless your continuing studies.

Before the lunch there was a farewell of a different kind: a funeral service at Kwong Wah hospital mortuary for a beloved drug addict who was a regular participant at MercyHK functions over the past two years. May his prayers in Heaven help us in this life. A few days before he died he received baptism, confirmation and the sacrament of the sick ... followed by days of prayers at his hospital bedside by MercyHK staff

Genesis 3: A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came  and to dust you will return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 140 - 143: Lord, save me from people who do evil, you who do justice for the needy. I have no way out of this situation. And no one wants to help me. Lord, I beg you tonight to make haste and give me an answer, for my spirit fails within me. In the morning let me know your love for I put my trust in you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble

Listen

1 Timothy 1.12-17: I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who called me into his service, even though I was an offender. Mercy was shown me, because I was acting in ignorance. Christ Jesus came into the world to save offenders. I myself am the greatest offender. Christ Jesus' patience and mercy to me is available to all offenders. I am a demonstration model of Christ's mercy
To the eternal King, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen

Listen

Matthew 26.47-56: While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. Judas had with him a large crowd of men with swords and clubs, sent by the religious leaders. Judas had told these men "The one I kiss is the man. Take him". So Judas went up to Jesus, said "Greetings, Master" and kissed him. The men  then seized Jesus. Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs?  Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All of Jesus' apostles then deserted him and ran away
Jesus, when I feel I am being treated unfairly by other people, may your arrest give me strength

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe
God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good

Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Listen

1 Timothy 1.1-10: From Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus, to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. I  wish you grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Please stay at Ephesus and insist that no one teaches misleading doctrines or empty speculation about the Law of God. As a penal code, the aim of the Law is to make provision not for good people but for offenders: for murderers, for people who are immoral with women or with boys or with men, for liars and for perjurers - and for everything else that is contrary to sound teaching
Jesus, please help law offenders not to offend again, and to make up for what they have done

Listen

Matthew 26.30-46: After their last meal, Jesus said to his apostles "Tonight all of you will desert me". Peter said "I will never desert you". Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive trees called Gethsemane. Jesus took Peter, James and John to a part of that area and asked them to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray." Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done". He stood up and found that the apostles were asleep. He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support me?" Three times he prayed the same way. Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready.  The one who is betraying me is coming".
Jesus, please help me give more time to prayer

Other prophets ( some words from Obadiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. This is the final page of the Simple Bible Old Testament. Tomorrow back to page 1 ... Genesis!):

Pride of heart leads us astray.

See how they are listless, those whose souls are not at peace

Lord, I have heard of all your wonderful deeds in the past. Do them again in our day, Lord!

Even when everything seems hopeless, I trust in you Lord, I praise you Lord.

Seek the Lord, all you humble people. Seek integrity, seek humility.

In the days to come, people will say "We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is with you".

Rejoice heart and soul, people of Jerusalem. See, your king comes to you. He is humble and riding on a donkey.

Dear God, thank you for all the beautiful teachings and stories  in "The Old Testament", ("The First Testament").  I now look forward to your message in "The New Testament"  ("The Second Testament")
My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!"  Though I walk in the midst of affliction you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.
Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

2 Thessalonians 3.10-16:  We gave you a rule when we were with you: not to let anyone have any food if he refused to do any work. Yet we hear that some of you are living in idleness, doing no work themselves but interfering with everyone else's work. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we order and call on such people to go on quietly working and earning the food that they eat. Never grow tired of doing what is right. May the Lord of peace give you peace always and everywhere

Matthew 26.17-29:

Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "Take this and drink it. This is my blood".

Micah 5-7: Bethlehem, you are the least important town in Judah, but Israel's future ruler will come from you. He will shepherd our people with the power of God. He himself will be our source of peace. My people, remember what God has done for you. Remember how God wants you to live. This is what God asks of you: act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God.
Lord, please help me act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with you

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. Matthew 26.1-16:
A few days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death. Jesus knew what was happening. He told his disciples
"In a few days I will be crucified". During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper.
At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood  that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time. The leaders paid Judas 30 pieces of silver. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest.

Jesus, please forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful  to you
