Pope Francis' journey to Indonesia, East Timor, Papua & New Guinea, Singapore: For latest reports Google "Pope Francis Indonesia". Jesus, please bless Francis' journey!

Once again after Christmas, please God, I will be using my annual holiday time to go overseas. This time not for the anti-drug campaign, but to spend time in one of the poorest parts of the world ... South Sudan ...where there are many refugees from the civil war in Sudan to the North. Hopefully I can do some English teaching and a few other things that will be of help. No air tickets or accommodation booked yet ... need to wait and see the latest situation in South Sudan, but I have obtained OK from the Oblates and from the HK Diocese for this trip ... and yesterday I received several vaccinations ... for typhoid, Hep-A and Polio .... having many years ago received Yellow Fever vaccination which lasts a life time. Malaria tablets also being arranged ... all of the above from a HK government approved private doctor across the road from MercyHK's centre in Nathan Road.

A courageous lay missionary from HK, Stephania Ling, has been working with Mother Teresa's sisters in South Sudan for some time, but that location is not practical for me to go to at this stage. Stephania's FB. Tentatively I will be based in the capital Juba and work with the local church there.

After vaccinations yesterday - see below

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 29: Jacob went to the home of his uncle Laban, in Haran. Laban had two daughters,  Leah and Rachel. Jacob fell in love with Rachel. Jacob made an agreement with Laban: Jacob would work for Laban for seven years in return for marriage to Rachel. For Jacob,  the seven years went like a flash because he loved Rachel so dearly. But Laban forced Jacob to marry both Leah and Rachel
and made him work for another seven years as well.

Dear God, please help us to enjoy our work

My recording of this reading

Psalms 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

Listen

2 Timothy 4.1-5: In the presence of God our Father and of Christ Jesus, I give you this command: proclaim the Good News and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, call to obedience - but do this with patience. Be prepared to face people who jettison sound teaching in favor of the latest novelty. Instead of listing to the truth, they will turn to myths. Make the spreading of the Good News your life's work
Jesus, please protect me from junk ideas and misleading  teachers

Listen

Mark 1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees pleaded "If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!" The leprosy left him at that moment and he was healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had happened (in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use him politically).  But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town (for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who are lepers

Listen

Reflection: Not a good prayer: "Jesus, if it is your will, please heal me". Almost an insult ... bit like child saying "Mum/Dad, if it is your will, please help me"!

After receiving vaccinations yesterday morning I went across the road to the MercyHK centre in Nathan Road where I saw a bee-hive of activity: asylum seekers taking part in a class to learn Cantonese; a HK deacon leading some drug addicts in daily scripture sharing, MercyHK case workers doing many office jobs .... a busy place!

Genesis 28: When Rebecca sent Jacob to Haran, she and Isaac told Jacob to find a wife in Haran.
While Jacob was on his way to Haran, God appeared to him in a dream and said to him "I will keep you safe wherever you go, and I'll bring you back safely to your own land."

Dear God, please keep us safe wherever we go

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven

Listen

2 Timothy 3.12-16: Anyone who tries to live a sincere Christian life will be persecuted. Stay faithful to what you have been taught and know to be true. Remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the Scriptures. From the Scriptures you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and can be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people's lives and teaching them to be holy
Jesus, please give all Christians, especially pastors, a passion for the Scriptures

Listen

Mark 1.35-39: The next morning, long before dawn, Jesus left the house and went off to a lonely place to pray. When Simon and the other fishermen found him, they said "Everyone is looking for you". Jesus replied "We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came". Jesus went all through Galilee, preaching in the prayer halls and casting out devils.
Jesus, may every town on earth welcome you and hear your message

c.f. readings for Sunday 22

Deuteronomy 2-4: Moses continued his talk to the Israelites: "God has been with us these 40 years, watching over us and providing for us. God gave us many victories and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies. So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen. Make sure to tell these things to your children's children. God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people. If you seek God with all your heart and soul you will find him. Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below, he and no other. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever."
Lord, please help me to seek you with all my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

 Listen

James 1.26-27: Don't go thinking you're "religious" while your tongue is out of control. That's the wrong idea of religion. Genuine religion, in the eyes of God our Father is this: coming to the help of orphans and widows, and staying clear of bad values
Jesus, help me control my tongue ...and help me do more to help the poor

 Listen

Mark 7.1-23: Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart

Genesis 26-27: God blessed and protected Isaac all his life. When Isaac grew old and was nearly blind, he followed the usual custom of giving his final blessing to his sons. He wanted to bless Esau first, since Esau was his older son. But Rebecca and Jacob tricked Isaac. Jacob dressed in Esau's clothes and put hairy animal skins on his arms. Before Esau came home, Jacob asked for Isaac's blessing. Isaac said "Your voice is that of Jacob, but your arms and scent are those of Esau. Are you really Esau?" Jacob said "I am." Isaac then gave him his solemn blessing. When Esau found out what had happened, he was very angry and planned to kill Jacob. So Rebecca got Jacob to go to Haran until Esau's anger cooled down.
Dear God, please bless everyone in my family

Psalms 9-13: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. You have so often rescued me from trouble. Thank you! You are the best helper for people in trouble. Please keep on helping me when troubles come. Please stop bad people from hurting others. Please let peoples in all countries know they must avoid evil and live a life of justice.

2 Timothy 3.2-5: For sure, some people will be self-centered and greedy; disobedient and ungrateful to parents; heartless, difficult to get along with; slanderers, profligates and enemies of everything that is good. Mark 1.29-34: Jesus  went to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus took her by the hand and helped her up. He also cast out many devils.

Yesterday afternoon's usual Thursday gathering for homeless people at the Dr Jesus Centre in Temple Street was an extra-happy affair as students from nearby Newman College and Fr Aloysius Mak from Sham Shui Po Parish and other guests joined the homeless people for a special sharing. Thank you Jesus!

In the afternoon I went to the High Court to make a bail application for someone in prison ... then attended an O.M.I. birthday celebration at our parish in Aberdeen.

Genesis 25: After Abraham died, God blessed Abraham's son Isaac. For a long time Isaac's wife Rebecca could not have children. Then after Isaac prayed for her, she had twin boys - Esau and  Jacob. Esau became a hunter. Jacob helped at home. Isaac favored Esau. Rebecca preferred Jacob. There was a strong rivalry between the two boys. Once when Esau came home seriously ill, he agreed to give Jacob his rights as first born son  in exchange for some soup Jacob had made.

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

2 Timothy 2.14-25: Remind everyone to avoid useless debates and discussions. These cause scandal and loss of faith. Be available for the Master to use you for any good work. Focus on goodness, faith, love and peace. Avoid futile speculations which only lead to quarrels. A servant of the Lord is not to engage in quarrels, but should be kind to everyone, a good teacher, and patient. Be gentle with anyone you have to correct
Jesus, please help me avoid useless discussions and arguments

Mark 1.21-28: Jesus and the fishermen went to the town of Capernaum. On the Sabbath Jesus began to teach in the local  prayer hall. The listeners were deeply impressed by Jesus' teaching. Unlike the religious leaders, Jesus taught with authority. That very day in the prayer hall there was a man possessed by an evil spirit.  The spirit shouted out "Have you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth?  I know who you are: the Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out of him!" The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out of him. The people in the prayer hall were amazed. They said "Here is a teaching which has authority. Even evil spirits obey him".  Jesus' reputation quickly spread throughout the whole district.
Jesus, Holy One of God, please protect my family from evil

c.f. readings for feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist

Jeremiah 1: Jeremiah lived in a village not far from Jerusalem. Jeremiah's father was a priest. God said to Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. I have appointed you as prophet to the nations." Jeremiah said to God: "Lord, I do not know how to speak. I am so young." God then touched Jeremiah's mouth and said: "I now put my words into your mouth. Go and tell the people everything I ask you to speak. Do not be dismayed by anyone. I am making you strong. You must confront Judah's kings, priests and people. They will oppose you, but will not overcome you, for I am with you."
Lord, please give special courage to people who speak your message for the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Mark 6.17-29: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded.

Genesis 23-24:   Listen to Chapters 23, 24 (a)
Not long after his wife Sarah died Abraham told his number one servant to go back to Haran and find a wife for his son Isaac. The servant went to Haran, to the town of Nahor. When women were getting water from the well in Nahor the servant prayed to God for help to find a wife for Isaac. He said to God, "If I ask a woman for a drink and she answers 'Please take some of my water, and I'll give some to your camels, too' may she be the one you have chosen for Isaac."

Listen to Chapters 23, 24 (b)

He had barely finished his prayer when Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel came to the well. She was very beautiful and not married. The servant asked her for water  and she said "Drink, sir...and I'll get water for your camels, too." Bethuel, a relative of Abraham, gladly agreed for Rebecca to go with the servant to be Isaac's wife. Rebecca herself was happy with the plan. Isaac married Rebecca and loved her dearly.

Dear God, please help people to find "Mr/Mrs Right"

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

2 Timothy 2.2-9: You have heard everything I teach in public. Hand it on to reliable people so that they in turn will be able to teach others. Put up with your share of difficulties like a good soldier of Christ Jesus, like an athlete who keeps all the rules, like a hard-working farmer. Remember the Good News that I carry: "Jesus Christ risen from the dead, sprung from the race of David". On account of this Good News I am chained up like a criminal. But no-one can chain up the Good News
Jesus, help people who are in prison on account of the Good News

Listen

Mark 1.14-20: Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good News from God. "The time has come" he said "and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News." As he was walking along by the sea of Galilee, he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew.  Jesus said to them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men". Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus.
Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother John. He called them also to follow him.  They left their nets and boat and followed him.

Jesus, please bless all the people who work full time as "fishers of men"
