I left home yesterday at 8.30am and got back before 6pm ...
having spent the whole day at two courts - the High Court and West Kowloon Court
- for the bail application and then bail release of a domestic worker on a money
charge of which she was innocent. Nothing makes a prison chaplain happier than
to see someone "outside" we used to see "inside". Thank you
Jesus (and please bless the kind High Court judge!)

Genesis
37: Jacob loved Joseph more
than his other sons
because Joseph was the son of his old age. Jacob had a special coat of many colors made for Joseph.
Joseph's older brothers were jealous of Joseph and hated him.
Joseph had a dream: he became a famous person.
This made his brothers hate him all the more.
One day, when the brothers were looking after their sheep
in a distant place,
Jacob sent Joseph to see how they were.
When the brothers saw Joseph coming
some of them wanted to kill him.
Eventually they sold Joseph to some slave traders
for 20 silver pieces.
The slave traders took Joseph to Egypt and re-sold him there.
The brothers told Jacob that a wild animal had killed Joseph.
Jacob was heart broken and mourned Joseph all the time.
Dear God, please
help me not to be jealous of other people

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my
help, whom shall
I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though
an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this
I long:
to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not
your face.
I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart.
Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my
help.
I will always praise you

Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter;

Genesis
35-36: God said to Jacob
"Go to Bethel and live there."
So Jacob moved to the area of Bethel.
Not long after this,
Rachel conceived another baby.
But Rachel died in childbirth.
Jacob named the baby boy Benjamin.
In all, Jacob had 12 sons: Reuben,
Simeon, Levi,
Judah, Issachar and
Zebulun
- their mother being Leah;
Joseph and Benjamin
- their mother being Rachel;
Dan and Naphtali
- their mother being Bilhah;
Gad and Asher
- their mother being Zilpah.
Jacob and his family
stayed in the land of Canaan,
the land of his father Isaac.
Esau and his family moved to the land of Edom.
Dear God, please
bless and protect my brothers and sisters

Psalms
24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples.
It is the Lord who is Creator of the
universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord.
Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long.
Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your
way of truth

Titus
3.1-7: Remind everyone to be obedient to government
officials; to be ready to do good at every
opportunity; not to go
slandering other people or picking quarrels; to be courteous and polite to
everyone. There was a time when we too were ignorant;
when we lived in wickedness and ill-will, hating each other and hateful
ourselves. But then the kindness and love of God our
Saviour were revealed, and God saved us because of his compassion. God saved us by the cleansing water of
rebirth, and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit whom he has poured over
us through Jesus Christ our Saviour. So we are justified by his grace, and look
forward to eternal life
Jesus,
Saviour of the world, you
are our Saviour

3.7-12: Jesus went again to the Sea of Galilee.
Great crowds of people from all over the country went to him.
They had heard what he was doing and wanted to see him. Large crowds of sick people pushed forward, trying to touch
Jesus.
They had heard how he had healed so many sick people.

Isaiah
35: Strengthen all
weary hands, steady all trembling knees, and say to all faint hearts
"Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you." Then the
eyes of the
blind shall be opened, the ears of the
deaf unsealed. Then the
lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the
dumb sing for joy. Exiles will return to Zion shouting
for joy, everlasting joy on their faces. Joy and gladness will go with them.
Sorrow and lament will be ended.
Lord, please heal the friends I know who are blind, deaf, dumb....
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
146: My
soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust
in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the
hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It
is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are
bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and
orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked.
The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you
Listen

James
2.1-13: Don't try to combine
faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions
between classes of people. Suppose two men come into your prayer meeting, one
beautifully dressed and with a gold ring; the other poor and in shabby clothes.
If you welcome the rich man, and look down on the poor man, you are making a big
mistake. It was those who are poor according to the world that God chose to be
rich in faith. So, never
make distinctions between classes of people. Everyone is your neighbor.
Love your neighbor as yourself. There will be judgment without mercy for people
who have not been merciful. But merciful people need have no fear of judgment
Jesus, help me treat everyone equally and
fairly. No favorites
Listen

Mark
7.31-37: Jesus travelled
through the area south of the Sea of Galilee. A deaf man with a speech
impediment was brought to him. Jesus took the man aside in private, away from
the crowd. He put his fingers into the man's ears and put spittle on his tongue.
Then he prayed and said "Be opened". The
man's ears were opened and his speech became normal. The people said
"He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the dumb
speak".
Jesus, heal (..name..) who is "deaf and dumb"

Genesis
33-34: When Esau and Jacob
met, Esau was friendly and kind to Jacob.
Esau accepted all the gifts of animals that Jacob gave him.
But Jacob continued to be wary of Esau.
Jacob moved to Shechem.
One of the men of Shechem raped
and then wanted to marry Jacob's daughter, Dinah.
Jacob and his sons craftily said they would agree to the marriage
if all of the men of Shechem were circumcised.
The men agreed. But on the third day
while the Shechem men were still in a lot of pain
Jacob's sons Simeon and Levi took matters into their own hands.
They killed all the Shechem men,
because their sister Dinah had been
raped. Jacob did not approve of the killings.

Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true

You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me
comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the
sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me

2.11-14: God's grace has made salvation available for
the whole human race.
We must give up everything that does not lead to God. We must delete our worldly ambitions. We must
be self-restrained and live good lives here in this present world, while
we wait in hope for the blessings that will come with the Coming of the
glory of our God and savior Christ Jesus. He sacrificed himself for us in order to set
us free from wickedness, and to purify us so that we would have no
ambition except to do good

3.1-6: Jesus again went to a prayer hall on the
Sabbath.
In the hall was a man with a withered hand. The religious leaders were watching Jesus to
see if he would heal on the Sabbath, hoping for something to use against
him. Jesus said to the man with the withered hand
"Stand in the middle of the hall". Then he said to the
religious leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do
good?"
They remained silent. Grieved that they were so obstinate, Jesus looked
angrily round at them, and said to the man "Stretch out your
hand". He stretched it out and it was healed.
The leaders left and began to plot how to get rid of Jesus.
Jesus, don't let my

Genesis 32: As Jacob returned to
his own land of Canaan,
he feared that his brother Esau would try to kill him.
So Jacob, always clever and wily, sent messengers ahead of him
to make friends with Esau.
The messengers reported that Esau was on his way to meet Jacob
and had 400 men with him.
This news increased Jacob's fears
so he divided his family and flocks into two groups,
thinking that if Esau attacked one group
then the other group could escape.
Jacob also prayed hard to God for protection.
Jacob sent gifts of animals to Esau,
hoping that Esau would be friendly to him.
On the night before Jacob and Esau met,
God appeared to Jacob
and gave him a new name: Israel.

22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the
Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer
connected.
My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet.
They await my death. They divide my clothing among them,
they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that you are good and
holy.
I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb
and entrusted me to my mother's breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now.
I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator.
May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who
are in big trouble right now,
especially people whose lives are in danger

Titus
2.1-10:
It's your job to preach the behavior that
goes with sound doctrine: the older men should be reserved, dignified,
moderate, sound in faith and love. The older women should be teachers of good
behavior, avoiding scandal mongering and too much wine. They should be an
example to the younger women in their love for their husbands and children.
Younger men should be moderate, with yourself
setting an example of sincerity for them. Slaves should be obedient to their masters,
and avoid petty thieving

"Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his

only the priests were allowed to eat. Go and learn the meaning of these words
'What I want is mercy, not superficial external offerings'. I am Master of the

Sitting with Jesus were some tax collectors and "sinners".
In fact Jesus' followers included many tax collectors and
"sinners". Some religious leaders asked Jesus' disciples
"Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" Jesus himself answered them: "It is not
the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the
virtuous, but sinners."

Genesis 30: Leah gave birth to
four sons - Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah.
Rachel had no children and was jealous of her sister Leah.
Rachel gave her servant girl Bilhah to Jacob
and Bilhah gave birth to two sons - Dan and Naphtali.
Leah then gave her servant girl Zilpah to Jacob
and Zilpah gave birth to two sons - Gad and Asher.
Leah herself had two more sons - Issachar and Zebulun and a daughter - Dinah.
Finally Rachel had a baby, a son whom she named Joseph.

19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God,

which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord
enlighten our lives

The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more

Mark
2.1-12: After some time Jesus returned to Capernaum.
Crowds quickly gathered at the house where he was staying. While he was preaching inside the house,
four men carried a paralytic on a stretcher to the front door.
They couldn't get in, because of the crowd, so they went up on the roof,
took off some of the roof covering, and lowered the stretcher in front of
Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the
paralytic "Your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders
present in the crowd thought to themselves "Who does this man
think he is? Only God can forgive sins". Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he
asked them "Which is easier? To say 'Your sins are
forgiven' or 'Get up and walk'? But to show you that I have authority to
forgive sins I now say: get up, pick up your stretcher and go home."
The man got up, picked up his stretcher and
walked out in front of everyone. The crowd said "We have never seen
anything like this".
Jesus, please heal my
