Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 42: In Joseph's home country of Canaan, the famine was very severe. Joseph's father Jacob said to his sons "I hear there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go to Egypt and buy grain for our families so that we will  not die". All Joseph's brothers, except Benjamin,  went to Egypt and arrived at the place where Joseph was selling grain. The brothers had not seen Joseph for about 20 years and they didn't recognize him.  But Joseph recognized them. Joseph put them to the test: he said they were spies, and he told them to bring Benjamin to Egypt to prove they were not spies. He kept Simeon in prison until they returned with Benjamin.
Dear God, please help any places in the world which are suffering from famine

My recording of this reading

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

Hebrews 3.1-13: Focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our religion. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just like Moses. Take care not to turn away from the living God. Keep encouraging one another, so that sin does not cause you to turn away from God
Jesus, help me stay focused on you

Listen

Mark 5.21-43: A prayer hall official, Jairus, fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded "My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her and save her life". While Jesus was on the way to Jairus' home,  people arrived and told Jairus "Your daughter is dead. No need to trouble the Master any further". Jesus heard this and said to Jairus "Do not be afraid. Just have faith". Jesus allowed only Peter, James and John to go with him. At Jairus' home, everyone was weeping and wailing. Jesus said to them "Why all this crying? The child is not dead, but asleep".  Everyone laughed at him. So he got them all to leave. Then taking the girl's parents and his 3 companions, he went to the place where the child was lying. Taking the girl by the hand he said to her "Little girl, I tell you to get up". The little girl got up at once.  She was 12 years old.
Jesus, please give us more faith to pray for the sick ....even for children who have died!

Tomorrow night: Mid-Autumn Festival

Last week when visiting a prison I was asked to help someone contact their family ... family did not know that the person was in prison. Two days ago I found a FB page of someone in the family, complete with "Missing Person page" showing a photo and name of the person in prison. Yesterday I was able to contact the family who are sad to know the person is in prison, but relieved to know that the person is alive and well after no news for a month.

Genesis 41: Two years later Pharaoh had a dream: he was standing by the river Nile and saw 7 healthy cows feeding on the riverside. Then he saw 7 sickly cows which ate the 7 healthy cows.
Pharaoh woke, then had a second dream when he went back to sleep: 7 rich ears of corn on one stalk, followed by 7 withered ears which ate the 7 rich ears. None of Pharaoh's wise men could interpret the dreams.

Then the cup-bearer told Pharaoh how Joseph could understand dreams. Pharaoh sent for Joseph and Joseph told Pharaoh the meaning of his dreams: the 7 healthy cows and 7 rich ears meant 7 good years for Egypt; the 7 sickly cows and 7 withered ears meant 7 years of famine.

Joseph also told Pharaoh what to do: use a tax to collect one fifth of all grain in the 7 good years; then during the 7 years of famine use the collected grain to feed Egypt. Pharaoh and his ministers were so impressed by Joseph's wisdom that Pharaoh made Joseph governor of the whole of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh himself. Pharaoh gave Joseph Asenath, a priest's daughter, as his wife. Joseph was now 30 years old, having spent more than 10 years in Egypt.

For the next 7 years Joseph traveled all over Egypt, supervising the collection of grain. Before the famine began, Joseph and Asenath had two sons: Manasseh and Ephraim. When the famine began, Pharaoh told the Egyptians "Go to Joseph and do what he tells you". People from all over Egypt and from other countries went to Joseph to buy grain during the famine.
Dear God, thank you for turning things around in Joseph's life

Mark 5.25-34: A large crowd gathered around Jesus near the side of the Sea of Galilee. In the crowd was a woman who had suffered from bleeding  for 12 years. She had spent all her money on doctors, but they  had been unable to help her. She had heard about Jesus. She came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. "If I can touch even his clothes, I will be healed" she said to herself. As soon as she touched Jesus' cloak, the source of the bleeding dried up at once. Aware that power had gone out from him, Jesus turned round and said "Who touched me?" The woman fell at his feet and told her story. Jesus said "My daughter, your faith has restored you to health. Go in peace and be free from your illness".
Jesus, please help sick people touch you by prayer

Last Friday night the old air con in meeting room of Dr Jesus Centre just exploded, literally. Electrician came immediately and arranged for new air con to be installed Saturday afternoon. Why the explosion? Because some wires of the old air con had been gnawed by ....a mouse/rat ... and mouse/rat had even brought paper and other items into the air con like a bird building a nest. New air con is said to be rat-proof!

c.f. readings for Sunday 24

Isaiah 50.5-9: The Lord has opened my ear to hear his message. The Lord has given me words to proclaim his message. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard. I did not protect my face from insult and spittle. I set my face like flint. The Lord will help me.
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

James 2.14-26: Faith and good works need to go together. Suppose someone is lacking clothes and food, and you say "I wish you well" and do nothing to help them. What good is that? Faith without good deeds is useless
Jesus, please help me put my faith into action by good deeds

Mark 8.27-38: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And who do you say I am?"  Peter answered "You are the Christ". Jesus then explained to them how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

Readings for Feast of The Cross

Numbers 21:
In order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline. But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the people, and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13): "The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".
Recording

Psalm 78: May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Recording

Philippians 2.6-11: His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God, but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as humans are. And being as all humans are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus, and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Recording (song: The Philippians Hymn)

John 3.13-17: Jesus said to Nicodemus: "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the Son of Man must be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

Genesis 40: Even in jail, God protected Joseph. When two of Pharaoh's officials, his cup-bearer and his baker also were put in jail, Joseph was able to interpret dreams they had. The cup-bearer dreamt he picked grapes and made wine for Pharaoh's cup. Joseph told him the meaning of his dream: in three days he'd be free and back at work as Pharaoh's cup-bearer. The baker dreamt that birds ate bread from a tray on top of his head. Joseph told him: "In three days you'll be hanged, and birds will eat your flesh." And so it happened as Joseph had said: on the third day the cup-bearer went back to work in Pharaoh's palace while the baker was hanged. Joseph asked the cup-bearer to help him get out of jail, but when the cup-bearer was free,  he forgot about Joseph.

He has taken his place at the right hand of the Father. He is far greater than any angel

Mark 4.35-41: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. A sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends said to each other "Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Genesis 39: The slave traders took Joseph to Egypt and sold him to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's top officials. God was with Joseph. God blessed everything Joseph did. Because Joseph did everything so well Potiphar put Joseph in charge of his household and all his possessions. Because of Joseph, God blessed Potiphar and all his interests. Potiphar's wife tried to seduce Joseph who was very handsome. But day after day Joseph refused to sleep with her. Then one day when Joseph again refused her she tore his clothes and started screaming. She claimed Joseph had tried to seduce her. Potiphar believed his wife and he put Joseph in jail.

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.

Mark 4.1-20:
One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. Jesus explained the story: People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.
Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Reflection:  Dear Jesus ... I hesitate to disagree with you ... but the problem was not the seed but the ground. Same seed, different result because of different ground. So I pray "please help us be good .... ground"!

Genesis 38: Jacob's son Judah had three sons - Er, Onan and Shelah. Er married Tamar, but not long after the wedding, Er died. So, according to custom, Judah asked Onan to marry Tamar and have a child for his brother. But Onan spilt his seed each time he slept with Tamar, so Tamar did not conceive. Judah then said to Tamar "Wait till Shelah grows up, and you can marry him." But when Shelah was older, he still hadn't been given to Tamar. So Tamar tricked her father-in-law Judah. She dressed as a prostitute and conceived by Judah. Judah did not know that the woman was Tamar; her face was covered. Three months later  Judah was told that his daughter-in-law was pregnant after acting as a prostitute. Judah followed the harsh local custom and said "Take her outside and burn her." But Tamar  produced Judah's seal, stick and cord which he had given to her as a pledge when he had sex with her. So Judah admitted his guilt and freed Tamar who gave birth to twin boys.
Dear God, please help married people to be happy

Mark 3.20-35: Jesus went back to Capernaum. Such a crowd gathered that he could not even have a meal. When his family  heard about such things, they set out to take care of  him, thinking that he was crazy. His mother and brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent in a message asking for him. Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you". Jesus replied "Who are my mother and brothers?" Then looking round at the people sitting in a circle about him, he said "Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother".
Jesus, please help me to do your will, even if people sometimes think I'm crazy
