Tues Sep 24

Hello from St Paul's Retreat Houses in Sheung Shui where I am taking part in the O.M.I. monthly overnight meeting. Yesterday afternoon I went to nearby Lo Wu women's prison to hand in some items ... and this afternoon when the meeting finishes I hope to go back to Lo Wu to continue the hand-in operation

Genesis 47-49: Pharaoh met Jacob and Joseph's brothers and welcomed them to be shepherds in the land of Goshen. Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Pharaoh humbly received Jacob's blessing. Joseph provided food for his family during the famine. As the famine got worse the Egyptians sold their livestock and their farms to Joseph in return for grain. Joseph made the Egyptians promise that when the famine was over they would give one fifth of their produce to Pharaoh. Jacob lived in Egypt for seventeen more years before he died in Joseph's arms. Before his death, Jacob blessed all his sons. Jacob adopted and also blessed Joseph's two sons Ephraim and Manasseh
Dear God, please bless Egypt and Israel, and help them be friends

My recording of this reading

Psalm 41: Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble. The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.
Lord, please help me to do more for the poor

Listen

Hebrews 10.21-25: Jesus is the supreme High Priest of the whole house of God. As we enter that house, let us have sincere hearts that are filled with faith and hope. Let us be concerned for each other, encouraging each other to do good. Do not stay away from the meetings as some people do,
but encourage each other to attend

Jesus, may my life encourage others to do good

Listen

Mark 6.45-52: After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish, Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake. Jesus stayed to send the crowds away. Then he went up into the hills to pray. When it was dark, the boat was far from land, but battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind. Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat. He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid." Then he got into the boat, and the wind stopped.
Jesus, please give me courage by helping me remember that you are in my boat (my life)

Reflection: In any situation, especially a difficult situation, if we think of Jesus we become and act more calmly and wisely

Readings are from Simple Bible

Genesis 46: Jacob and his whole family, about 70 people, took all their possessions and moved to Egypt. God said to Jacob "I myself will go down to Egypt with you". Joseph was ready for their arrival in Egypt. As soon as his father appeared, Joseph ran to greet him. Joseph threw his arms around his father and cried for a long time on his father's shoulder. Jacob said to Joseph "Now that I have seen you again, I can die in peace".
Dear God, please help separated family members to be re-united

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Listen

Hebrews 8.9 - 9.14: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart and protect me

Listen

Mark 6.30-44: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please help the starving people of the world

c.f. readings for Sunday 25

Wisdom 1-2: Love virtue, honesty and simplicity, since God is found by people whose hearts are seeking goodness. Selfishness, dishonesty and bad habits, these close the door of our hearts and prevent Wisdom from entering. Bad people persecute good people, since the lives of good people are a reproach to bad people.
Lord, please help me to be a good person

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

 Listen

James 3.16-17: Wherever you find jealousy and ambition, you find disharmony and evil practices. On the other hand, wisdom from heaven is good and peaceful and kindly and considerate. It is full of compassion, and does good. There is no trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it
Jesus, give me wisdom. Make me peaceful

 Listen

Mark 9.33-35: One day Jesus heard his disciples arguing about which one of them was the most important. So he said to them "If you want to be No.1, you must become No.1,000 and a servant of everyone else"
Jesus, help world leaders care more about their people than about themselves

c.f. readings for Feast of St Matthew

Isaiah 51-52: Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117:
O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Recording

Ephesians 4.1-16: I implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall become more and more like Christ. We are parts of the Body of Christ. Christ is the head. Each part must do its bit to keep the Body healthy and growing in love.
Jesus, help me understand how the Church is your Body

Recording

Matthew 9.9-13: One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house he said to a tax collector named Matthew "Follow me". Matthew got up and followed Jesus. Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house. Some tax collectors and "bad" people sat at Jesus' table. Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends "Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?" Jesus' answer was "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and think about the Bible words 'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'. I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."
Jesus, please help religious leaders in today's world to care more about people who are rejected by society

Genesis 45: When Joseph realized his older brothers were sorry for having sold him as a slave he was overcome and started crying loudly. He told his brothers "I  am your brother Joseph whom you sold into Egypt. God sent me here to provide food for you". He hugged all his brothers and talked with them. Joseph told his brothers to bring their father and their families to Egypt since the famine would last for five more years. Pharaoh was pleased that Joseph's brothers had come and warmly invited them to live in Egypt. The brothers returned to Canaan. Their father Jacob was overcome with joy.
Dear God, please help separated family members to be re-united

My recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Listen

Hebrews 7.1-28: Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of God. He blessed  Abraham.  Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all he had. Melchizedek's priesthood  continued down the ages in people dedicated to the service of God. It reached its perfection in the Son of God, the Eternal High Priest. The Son of God, our Lord, did not come from the priestly tribe of Levi. Everyone knows he came from the tribe of Judah. This is because he established a new priesthood, coming not from Levi, but from Melchizedek. This is why the prophecy was made of him "You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, for ever". Jesus' priestly power to save us is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him
Jesus, Eternal High Priest, please help all pastors and priests be more like you every day

Listen

Mark 6.17-29: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded. Jesus, please give the world good leaders, and protect people from bad leaders like Herod

Genesis 44: Joseph had his brothers' sacks filled with free grain, then he gave them back their money.
But he again put them to the test: he got his servants to put his special chalice in Benjamin's sack. Not long after the brothers left, Joseph's servants caught up with them and asked them why had they stolen Joseph's chalice. They replied that they would never dream of doing such a thing and that if the chalice was found in anyone's sack that man would die. Each man's sack was opened, beginning with the oldest, and finally the chalice was discovered in Benjamin's sack. On returning to Joseph's home
the brothers pleaded with Joseph not to punish Benjamin. Judah even offered to be Joseph's slave for life in return for Benjamin's freedom
Dear God, please help us in time of trial
My recording of this reading

Psalm 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you, you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you, confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

Listen

Hebrews 6.11-19: May every one of you persevere in your Christian life. Never give up. Remember how Abraham persevered in following God, despite so many difficulties. Take a firm grip on the hope that is held out to us by God. This hope is an anchor for us, a lifeline going right up to heaven
Jesus, you are my anchor. You are my lifeline

Listen

Mark 6.7-13:
Jesus went on a teaching tour of the nearby villages. He sent out  his 12 special friends in 6 pairs, with authority over evil spirits. He told them to take only bare essentials for the journey. He said "If any place does not welcome you, as you leave that place shake the dust from your feet as a sign to them". The 12 apostles preached repentance. They cast out many devils. They anointed sick people with oil and healed them.
Jesus, may every place welcome you and your messengers

Genesis 43: The famine continued and so Jacob sent his sons back to Egypt to buy more grain. This time Benjamin went with them, even though Jacob worried greatly about his safety. When the brothers arrived in Egypt Joseph invited them to his home for a meal. Simeon was allowed to join them. The brothers still didn't recognize Joseph. Joseph was moved when he saw Benjamin, his full blood brother. Joseph left the company and cried for quite some time. When Joseph rejoined the meal he gave the brothers a hearty meal which they all enjoyed. Joseph arranged that Benjamin's portion was extra large.
Dear God, please bless all missing persons

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne of grace. He will give us grace when we are in need of help

Mark 6.1-6: Jesus and his disciples went to his home town of Nazareth. On the Sabbath he went to the prayer hall and began teaching. People in the prayer hall were astonished at his teaching. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He is just a carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, Joset, Jude and Simon. His sisters also are here." And they would not accept him. So Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country". Because of their lack of faith, Jesus cured only a few sick people there. He was amazed at the lack of faith in Nazareth.
Jesus, please help me be happy about your gifts to others
