Imitating
Pope Francis
Tues Oct 1
On
yesterday's menu, below, I said how I had put a comment on
this SCMP article.
But my comment (another one!) was deleted. My comment went something like this:
China continues to speak common sense about Gaza. c.f. this
BBC report describing how China's UN ambassador said that a US veto of a UN
ceasefire proposal meant giving a green light for continued (Israeli)
slaughter in Gaza".
Seems that the SCMP, which has been so good to
me and my NGOs over the years, has a world news editor who does not like
criticism of Israel's genocide in Gaza - even criticism by China's UN
ambassador!

Exodus
5-6: Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said
'God says: let my people go into the desert to worship me'.
Pharaoh not only refused to let them go;
he also made their life more difficult
by forcing them to gather their own straw for making bricks.
The people complained to Moses and Aaron
for having made their life more difficult.
So Moses prayed to God for help
and God said he would force Pharaoh to let the people go.
Dear
God, please don't let me make life difficult for other people
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you
are.
You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from
trouble.
You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares
that I can't get to sleep.
Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you,
in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready.
I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength,
and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise
and love you every day

James
1.19-25: Be quick to listen, and slow to speak, and
even slower to get angry.
God's goodness is never helped by human anger. Accept and submit to the word which has been
planted in your heart and can save your soul. Do what the word tells you. Don't just listen
to it. Actively put God's word into practice in your life
Jesus, help me put your word into practice in
my life each day

Mark
8.27-38: One day Jesus asked his disciples
"Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied
"Some say you are one of the famous prophets".
Jesus then asked them "And who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are
the Christ". Jesus then explained to them
how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said
"If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life.
Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this
world
yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my
life by losing it in service of others

8.22-26: In the village of
Bethsaida, a blind man was
brought to Jesus.
His friends begged Jesus to touch him. Jesus took the man by the hand and led him

Jesus put spittle on the man's eyes
and placed his hands on the man's eyes. "Can you see anything?" asked Jesus.
The man was starting to see and replied "I can see people. They look

Numbers 11: Some
of the Israelites started complaining about not having meat to eat, only manna.
So God arranged for quails to land near the camp and be easily caught for food.
About this time Moses selected seventy men to help him care for the people. God blessed
the seventy men and they began to prophesy. Moses said "I
wish the whole people of God could be prophets, and God would give his
Spirit to them all".
Dear God, please pour out your Holy Spirit on the whole human family
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
19: The heavens proclaim
the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't
speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the
whole world. The
universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in
our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our
lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The
decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than
honey, than honey from the comb. But often we are unaware of our
errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts
of my heart be pleasing to you

James
5.1-6: Are
you rich and powerful? Then start weeping for the
miseries that are coming your way. Your wealth is rotting, your clothes are
being eaten by moths. And your body also will soon be corroding in a burning
fire. You cheated your workers. You lived a life of luxury without any care
for people who were suffering. You condemned and killed the innocent

9.38-41: Jesus' apostle
John, said "Master, we saw a man who is not one of our group casting out
devils in your name. Because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him".
Jesus said "You must not stop him. No one who works a miracle in my name is
going to speak evil of me. Anyone
who is not against us is for us. In fact, even someone who gives you a
cup of water to drink because you belong to me, will be rewarded".

One Israelite mother hid her baby boy for three months.
When she could no longer hide him
she put him in a basket

The basket was found by Pharaoh's daughter
when she went to bathe in the river.
She felt sorry for the baby and decided to keep it.
The baby's sister saw all this happen

Pharaoh's daughter agreed,
and so the baby's mother was paid by Pharaoh's daughter

When the child was weaned,
he was taken to Pharaoh's daughter
who treated him like her own son.
She named the baby Moses.
When Moses became a man,
he visited the Israelites and saw their hard life.
He saw an Egyptian hit one of the Israelites
so he killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.
But people found out; and so did Pharaoh who decided to kill Moses.

Exodus 1: After about 300 years, when the Israelites had grown to a huge number,
the Egyptians began to see the Israelites as a danger to Egypt.
So they forced the Israelites into slavery
and made their life miserable.
The Egyptians forced the Israelites to make bricks
and build cities.
But the more the Israelites were oppressed,
the more they increased in number.
So the Egyptian king told the Israelite midwives
to kill all new-born boys.
But the midwives let the baby boys live,
