Tues Oct 1

On yesterday's menu, below, I said how I had put a comment on this SCMP article.

But my comment (another one!) was deleted. My comment went something like this:
China continues to speak common sense about Gaza. c.f. this BBC report describing how China's UN ambassador said that a US veto of a UN ceasefire proposal meant giving a green light for continued (Israeli) slaughter in Gaza".

Seems that the SCMP, which has been so good to me and my NGOs over the years, has a world news editor who does not like criticism of Israel's genocide in Gaza - even criticism by China's UN ambassador!

Exodus 5-6: Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said 'God says: let my people go into the desert to worship me'.  Pharaoh not only refused to let them go; he also made their life more difficult by forcing them to gather their own straw for making bricks. The people complained to Moses and Aaron for having made their life more difficult. So Moses prayed to God for help and God said he would force Pharaoh to let the people go.
Dear God, please don't let me make life difficult for other people

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength,
and each morning acclaim your love.

O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Listen

James 1.19-25: Be quick to listen, and slow to speak, and even slower to get angry. God's goodness is never helped by human anger. Accept and submit to the word which has been planted in your heart and can save your soul. Do what the word tells you. Don't just listen to it. Actively put God's word into practice in your life
Jesus, help me put your word into practice in my life each day

Listen

Mark 8.27-38: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And who do you say I am?"  Peter answered "You are the Christ". Jesus then explained to them how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

Exodus 4: Moses said to God "What if the people won't believe you sent me?" God said "Throw your staff onto the ground." When Moses threw his staff onto the ground, it became a snake. "Catch it by the tail" said God. When Moses caught it by the tail, it changed back into a staff. Moses said to God "I'm a poor speaker." God said "Aaron your older brother can be your mouthpiece. Now go back to Egypt. It's safe to go back now; the people who wanted to kill you are dead." Back in Egypt, Moses and Aaron gathered the Israelite leaders and told them all that God had said. The elders rejoiced that God was going to help them.
Dear God, God of Moses and Aaron, we praise you Lord

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Listen

James 1.1-12: From James, servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Greetings to believers scattered around the world. You will always have difficulties and things going wrong. When they happen, praise God for them and patiently keep going. Blessed are people who stand firm when trials come. They have proved themselves, and will win the prize of eternal life which the Lord has promised to those who love him
Jesus, please give me patience and praise when life gets tough

Listen

Mark 8.22-26: In the village of Bethsaida, a blind man was brought to Jesus. His friends begged Jesus to touch him. Jesus took the man by the hand and led him outside the town. Jesus put spittle on the man's eyes and placed his hands on the man's eyes. "Can you see anything?" asked Jesus. The man was starting to see and replied "I can see people. They look like trees, but they are walking about". Jesus then placed his hands on the man's eyes again, and he saw clearly. He was healed and could see everything clearly.
Jesus, heal my friend ....(name)...who is blind

c.f. readings for Sunday 26
Numbers 11:
Some of the Israelites started complaining about not having meat to eat, only manna. So God arranged for quails to land near the camp and be easily caught for food. About this time Moses selected seventy men to help him care for the people. God blessed the seventy men and they began to prophesy. Moses said "I wish the whole people of God could be prophets, and God would give his Spirit to them all".
Dear God, please pour out your Holy Spirit  on the whole human family

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

 Listen

James 5.1-6: Are you rich and powerful? Then start weeping for the miseries that are coming your way. Your wealth is rotting, your clothes are being eaten by moths. And your body also will soon be corroding in a burning fire. You cheated your workers. You lived a life of luxury without any care for people who were suffering. You condemned and killed the innocent
Jesus, give uncaring rich and powerful people a change of heart

 Listen

Mark 9.38-41: Jesus' apostle John, said "Master, we saw a man who is not one of our group casting out devils in your name. Because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him". Jesus said "You must not stop him. No one who works a miracle in my name is going to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us. In fact, even someone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to me,  will be rewarded".
Jesus, please help me stop dividing people into "us and them"

Exodus 3: The Israelites begged God to free them from slavery in Egypt. God heard their cry and called Moses to be their leader. God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and said to him "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I have heard the prayers of my people in Egypt. I now send you to Pharaoh to win the freedom of my people." Moses asked what was God's name. God replied 'I Am who I Am. Tell the people "I Am has sent me to you".'
Dear God, God of life, God of Abraham, we praise you Lord

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forget God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Hebrews 13.8-21: Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday and as he will be for ever. Do not let yourselves be led astray by strange doctrines that teach a different Jesus. Jesus died outside the city. Let us go to him and share his rejection. Our life in this world is a temporary arrangement, like a tent. We look for a permanent home in the life to come. Keep doing good works and sharing your resources
God of peace, you brought  Jesus back from the dead to be our great Shepherd and Priest. Make me ready to do your will in any kind of good action

Mark 7.31-37: Jesus travelled through the area south of the Sea of Galilee. A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him. Jesus took the man aside in private, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man's ears and put spittle on his tongue. Then he prayed and said "Be opened". The man's ears were opened and his speech became normal. The people said "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak".

Exodus 2: One Israelite mother hid her baby boy for three months. When she could no longer hide him she put him in a basket and placed the basket among reeds near a river bank. The basket was found by Pharaoh's daughter when she went to bathe in the river. She felt sorry for the baby and decided to keep it. The baby's sister saw all this happen and asked Pharaoh's daughter if she'd like a nurse for the baby. Pharaoh's daughter agreed, and so the baby's mother was paid by Pharaoh's daughter to be the baby's nurse. When the child was weaned,  he was taken to Pharaoh's daughter who treated him like her own son. She named the baby Moses. When Moses became a man, he visited the Israelites and saw their hard life. He saw an Egyptian hit one of the Israelites so he killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand. But people found out; and so did Pharaoh who decided to kill Moses. Moses then fled to the land of Midian.

The priest of Midian had 7 daughters. One day when they drew water for their father's sheep they were driven away from the well by some shepherds. Moses protected them from the shepherds and helped them get water from the well. Their father, Jethro, was grateful to Moses and invited him for a meal. Moses then stayed with Jethro who gave him his daughter Zipporah for a wife.

Dear God, please protect all new-born babies, especially baby girls

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. Keep in mind those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them. Keep your marriage undefiled. Avoid greed. Be content with what you have

Mark 7.24-30: Jesus went to the district of Tyre. A foreign woman fell at his feet and begged him to expel a devil from her daughter. Jesus said "The children (= Jews)  should be fed first. It's not right to give the children's food to the house dogs (= foreigners)". She replied "Ah yes, Sir, but the house dogs under the table can eat the children's scraps". Jesus said to her "For expressing such great faith, you can go home happy. The devil has gone out of your daughter".  She went home and found the child lying on a bed, and the devil gone.

Exodus 1: After about 300 years, when the Israelites had grown to a huge number, the Egyptians began to see the Israelites as a danger to Egypt. So they forced the Israelites into slavery and made their life miserable. The Egyptians forced the Israelites to make bricks and build cities. But the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they increased in number. So the Egyptian king told the Israelite midwives to kill all new-born boys. But the midwives let the baby boys live, and God was pleased with the midwives and blessed them. Pharaoh then ordered all Israelite baby boys to be drowned in the river.
Dear God, please stop people, especially children, from being used as slaves

Psalm 46:
(c.f. famous hymn by Martin Luther "A Mighty Fortress is our God",  and also the hymn "Be Still and Know that I am God")
God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".

Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Hebrews 11.1 - 12.15: Only faith can keep us going. Only faith helped Abraham and other famous people in the Scriptures to keep going. So many of them were weak people who were given strength by God, to be brave when life became difficult. With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around us, we too should keep running in the race we have started. We should get rid of everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside us. His example going to the cross gives us courage. Try to live at peace with everyone. Don't let any seed of bitterness begin to grown and make trouble. This can poison a whole community
Jesus, help me remember your presence in my heart

Listen

Mark 7.1-23:
Some religious leaders asked Jesus "Why do your disciples ignore many external practices of our religion?" Jesus answered, with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "This people honors me with external lip-service, while their hearts are far from me." Jesus also said "It's not certain foods or lack of washing  that makes a person unclean. It's evil in the heart that makes a person unclean. Evil intentions like murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. These are the things that make a person unclean."
Jesus, please  clean my heart

Genesis 50: After mourning their father for 70 days Joseph and his brothers went to Canaan and buried Jacob there. Many of Pharaoh's officials went with Joseph to Canaan. When the group returned to Egypt, Joseph's brothers again asked him to forgive them for selling him as a slave.
Joseph replied "God has turned this evil into good, and through me has helped many people. So do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your families". Joseph lived to see his children's children. Before he died, he asked that his bones one day be taken back to Canaan.

Dear God, thank you for the beautiful story of Joseph

Psalm 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you
