At 6pm last night at MercyHK's new day care centre for homeless
people at 192 Shanghai Street there was a special meal for about a dozen street
sleepers and members of the MercyHK team to declare the centre
"operational". Please God in the next month or so there will be an
official blessing and opening. God bless all who will work at the centre (social
workers Simon and Tanni, case worker Shirley, volunteer William), all who will
use the centre, all who took part in the design and renovation of the centre,
and all whose donations made the centre possible.

Exodus
9: Through Moses, God kept saying to
Pharaoh
"Let my people go to offer me worship."
But Pharaoh kept refusing to let the people go.
So God sent three more plagues:
all the Egyptians' animals died,
then all the Egyptians were covered with boils,
then the land was hit by a fierce hailstorm. During the hailstorm, Pharaoh said the people could go.
But as soon as the storm stopped, he changed his mind again.
Dear
God, please help us not to ignore your voice
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to
my neck.
I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause.
I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose
faith in you.
May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart.
No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison.
In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant.
Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God.
O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our
assistance. Lord make haste to help us
Listen
James
2.14-26: Faith and good works need to go together.
Suppose someone is lacking clothes and food,
and you say "I wish you well" and do nothing to help them. What good is that?
Faith
without good deeds is useless
Jesus, please help me put my faith into action
by good deeds
Listen

Mark
9.33-35: One day Jesus heard his disciples arguing about which one of them was the most important.
So he said to them "If you want to be No.
1, you must become No. 1,000 and a servant of everyone else"
Jesus, give the
world leaders who care more about their people than about
themselves

Genesis
3: A
creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and
first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why
they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake.
God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday
a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the
man and woman: "From dust you came, and to dust you will return." The
first man's name was Adam (meaning
"man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning
"life").
Dear God, please help me
understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you
My
recording of this reading

Luke 1.46: My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Acts
1.12: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount
of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a
kilometer. They gathered
in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were
Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of
Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several
women, including
Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers.

Luke
1.26: In the sixth
month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of
Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named
Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed
by God. You
are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great
and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can
this happen since I am a virgin?" The
angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her
old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth month". "I am
the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done
for me". And the angel left her

Reflection on the above readings:
Many religions use beads to help pray. Beads help us to remember what we're doing. Beads help us to focus on praying ... even as we ride a bus or walk along the street. My own custom is to pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary at the start of each decade of the Rosary, and then for the 9 other beads to use words from the Bible readings of the day. So for today, the first decade might use a bead or two for each of these words: "the snake tempted them", "they disobeyed God", "Someday a member of the human race will defeat you", "from dust you came, to dust you will return", the first people were named "man" and "woman". Then the Glory be to the Father, then the "O my Jesus" prayer. Then to the next decade

Genesis
1-2: God made
the world. God made the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole
universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God
made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God
made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in
his own image and said to them "Be
fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had
made, and all of it was good, very good

Psalm
128: O blessed are those who love
the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You
will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your
house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus
shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you

you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On

1.1-4: At
various times in the past and in various different ways, God spoke to our
ancestors through the prophets. But
in our own time, he has spoken to us through his Son, through whom he
made everything. He is the radiant light of God the Father's glory. He has
sacrificed himself for sinners. He has taken his place at the right hand of the
Father. He is far greater than any angel

Mark
10.1-12: One day some
religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him "Is it against the
Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?" Jesus replied "God
created male and female, for the two to become united as one body. What
God has united, no one should separate." The religious leaders then asked
"But why did Moses allow divorce?" Jesus replied "Moses allowed
divorce because people were so hard of heart. But divorce was not God's
plan. So I say to you, anyone
who walks out on their partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery."
Jesus, please help married people stay together
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: In many developed countries, the divorce rate is 1/2 or higher. But if a couple goes to church each weekend, the figure drops to about 1/40. And if they also pray together each day/night, the figure drops to about 1/400

8: After seven days, God told Moses and

Psalms
66-69: O God, be gracious and bless us
and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God.
Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his
name.
Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow,

James
2.1-13: Don't try to combine faith in Jesus Christ,
our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of
people. Suppose two men come into your prayer meeting,
one beautifully dressed and with a gold ring; the other poor and in shabby
clothes. If you welcome the rich man, and look down on
the poor man, you are making a big mistake. It was those who are poor according to the
world that God chose to be rich in faith. So, never make distinctions between classes of
people.
Everyone is your neighbor. Love your neighbor as yourself. There will be judgment without mercy for
people who have not been merciful. But merciful people need have no fear
of judgment

Mark
9.14-29: A man brought his son to Jesus and pleaded:
"Master, there is a spirit of dumbness in
my son. When it takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground, and he
foams at the mouth and goes rigid". They brought the boy. As soon as the spirit
saw Jesus, it threw the boy into convulsions. Jesus asked the father "How long has this
been happening?"
He replied "From childhood....please help us!" Jesus said "Everything is possible if you
have faith".
The father cried out "Please increase my faith!" Jesus rebuked the evil spirit: "Deaf and
dumb spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again".
The spirit came out, but the boy seemed to
have died. Jesus took him by the hand and helped him up. Jesus' disciples asked "Why were we
unable to expel that spirit?"
Jesus replied "Only prayer can drive out that kind of spirit"

Galatians 6: The only thing I can boast about is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not; what matters is for each person to become an altogether new creature. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, who form the Israel of God. The Prayer of Saint Francis: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Feast of St Francis:
A Dominican, a Jesuit, and a
Franciscan were stranded on a deserted island for many
years. One day, they found a lamp buried in the sand, and out popped a Genie.
The genie said to them, "Thank you so much for setting me free from my
lamp! I will grant each of you one wish to show my gratitude!"
The Jesuit spoke first: "I long to be back at the university where I study
and teach once more. Please, send me back, away from here!" Poof, he was
gone. The Dominican spoke next: "I long to be back with the people,
preaching the word of God in the streets and in the church. Please, send me
back, away from here!" Poof, he was gone. After thinking long and
hard, the Franciscan spoke last: "I kind of miss those guys. Can you bring
them back?"

Exodus 7:
Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh again
and showed him Aaron's staff changing into a snake.
When Pharaoh's magicians were able to do the same thing
Aaron's staff swallowed up the magicians' staffs.
But Pharaoh's heart stayed stubborn
and he wouldn't listen to Moses and Aaron.
So God told Moses and Aaron to go to the river the next morning.
When they saw Pharaoh there
Aaron struck the river with his staff
and the river and all water throughout Egypt
turned into blood.
But Pharaoh still would not let the Israelites go.

61-65: O God, hear my cry,
you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul
at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God,
everyone in trouble.
Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God,
for you I long.
My body and soul thirst for you
like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better
than life,
my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember
you.
On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of

On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed.
His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. Moses and Elijah appeared
and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for
us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its
shadow.
From the cloud came a voice:
"This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him."
The disciples bowed to the ground.
When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance

c.f. Feast of the Guardian Angels
Exodus
23: The Lord says
this: "I myself will send an angel before
you to guard you as you go and to bring you to the
place that I have prepared. Give him reverence and listen to all that he says.
Offer him no defiance; he would not pardon such a fault, for my name is in him. If
you listen carefully to his voice and do all that I say, I shall be enemy to
your enemies, foe to your foes. My angel will go before you."
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
91: He who dwells in the
shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I
trust". The
Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You
will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon
you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he
commanded his angels to
keep you safe in all your ways.

Acts
12: When
Peter was rescued from prison, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John
Mark where people were praying for him, thinking he was still in prison. A
servant girl opened the door when Peter knocked. She ran inside to tell the
group that Peter was at the door. The group did not believe Peter was
there. One of them said "it
must be his angel".
Eventually they opened the door and Peter described how an angel had rescued him
from prison.
Recording

Matthew 18.1: The disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, "I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven."
Reflection
on the above readings: I
recommend this little prayer which I've said each morning and night for 60
years:
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's
love commits me here. Ever this day (night) be at my side, to light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen
