This
report from the Netherlands has these words:
... the Dutch are much more
aware that a stay in prison does more harm than good. Society may be rid of a
criminal for a while, but in many cases, criminals simply resume their
activities when they leave prison. They may become more ruthless, due to the
violent prison climate in which they have had to survive. And perhaps they have
a wider criminal network that they built up behind bars.
This also applies to shorter sentences. Even these can completely turn an
offender’s life upside down. You can lose your job, home and social network.
And you rarely become a better person during a short stay in jail.

you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all
your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of

a rich person to get to Heaven".

I spent nearly all of yesterday "at the desk" doing
many jobs, nearly all for prisoners. One special mitigation letter to the Chief
Executive took more than two hours

The word "brazen" indicates "shameless boldness" ... a
characteristic displayed by bad people. Well, when I read about Netanyahu
and Biden openly discussing how to attack Iran, the word that came to my
mind was "brazen".

Egypt
Pharaoh again changed his mind.
He decided to catch the Israelites
and make them return to
God then told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea.
After he did so, a strong wind blew all night
and caused the waters to part.
Then the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground,
with walls of water on both sides.
The Egyptians gave chase and also went into the sea.
When the Israelites had crossed to the other side
Moses again stretched out his staff over the sea
and this time the sea returned to its normal flow,
drowning all the Egyptians.
The people offered thanksgiving and praise to God

God, please rescue people in trouble, just as you rescued the Israelites when they were in trouble

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning.
Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and
spared them.
He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised
land
and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain
shrines
and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their
leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all
you have done for us

4.13-15: Avoid talking like this: "Tomorrow I'm
going to another town, to do business there for a year". You don't know what will happen tomorrow. You
are no more than a mist that is here for a little while, then disappears. What you should say is: "If it's the
Lord's will, tomorrow I'm going to another town for a year"
Jesus, help me to remember to say to people: "God
willing, I will see you next month" or "Please God, I will see
you next month", rather than just "I'll see you next month"

Mark 10.35-45: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to his cousins James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all "In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world"

Last night 11 women who work on Temple Street enjoyed a meal at the Dr Jesus
Centre, with someone from a special NGO and MercyHK social workers Simon and
Tanni .... the meal being extra enjoyable since yesterday was the birthday of
one of the women ... for which MercyHK's Lucia bought two lovely birthday cakes.

Pharaoh's
advisers urged him to let the Israelites go.
They said to him "How much longer is this affair going to go on?
Let the Israelites go before Egypt
is ruined."
Pharaoh agreed to let the men go, but not the rest of the people.
So God sent two more plagues on the Egyptians:
locusts which devoured all the plants and trees,
and then three days of total darkness,
except in the land where the Israelites lived.
But even after the above nine plagues,
Pharaoh still wouldn't let the Israelites go. Dear
God, stubbornness can sometimes be a good thing, but please don't let me
be stubborn if that will hurt other people

whole animal is under control. A tiny rudder can control a big ship. In the same way,

of these little children in my name, welcomes me. But anyone who causes
scandal to one of these little ones, commits a great
