Yesterday afternoon I attended two meetings - one as a director
of MercyHK, the other as a director of Voice for Prisoners - with the same
topics: how to better help people in prison and how to stop drug trafficking
into/in HK.
In the evening a group of dear friends from Notre Dame Parish in Kowloon (where I was stationed 1985-1994) came for a meal at MercyHK's canteen in Temple Street, followed by a visit to MercyHK's new day centre for homeless people in nearby Shanghai Street.

Exodus
23: Moses told the people:
"Don't be unfair to anyone, friend or foe.
Work for six days, then rest on the seventh day.
Work your land for six years,
then let the land rest and recover in the seventh year.
Three times a year you must celebrate special feasts:
the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
the Feast of Harvest,
the Feast of Ingathering.
On these three feasts
all men must present themselves before the Lord."
God's promise:
"I will send an angel before you to protect you
and bring you to the land I have prepared for you.
Eventually you will possess this special land
and take it over from the peoples who live there now."
Dear
God, please help everyone love you

Psalm
87: On
the holy mountain is Jerusalem,
the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told
glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love
the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all
shall be her children.
In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a
home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place
of peace and prayer for all peoples

1 Peter
2.11-15: Keep yourselves free from selfish passions
that attack the soul.
Behave honorably among non-Christians, even if they treat you badly. For the sake of the Lord, accept the authority

13.1-37: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the future:
"On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed.
But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation
before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun
and moon will stop shining.
Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man
will appear in the sky
and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds
with power and glory.
He will send his angels with a loud trumpet
to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you should
live a good life
and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"
Jesus, please help me live and
grow and die in your love ...and not be afraid of death

Reflection: Israel's political leaders and armed forces are ignoring No. 5 in today's first reading
-------------------------
George
W. Bush, the president of the United States, was in an airport lobby, noticed a
man in a long flowing white robe with a long flowing white beard and flowing
white hair. The man had a staff in one hand and some stone tablets under the
other arm.
Excited,
George W. approached the man and inquired, "Aren't you Moses?"
The
man ignored George W. and stared at the ceiling.
Mr.
Bush positioned himself more directly in the man's view and asked again,
"Aren't you Moses?"
The
man continued to peruse the ceiling.
George
tugged at the man's sleeve and asked once again, "Aren't you Moses?"
The
man finally responded in an irritated voice, "Yes I am."
George
W. asked him why he was so uppity and the man replied, "The last time I
spoke to a Bush I had to spend forty years in the desert!"

Isaiah 2: In
the days to come, the mountain of the Lord's Temple will be specially blessed. All
the nations will come to it and say: "Come, let us
go up to the mountain of the Lord, that he may teach us his ways so that we may
walk in his paths". When they learn the ways of the Lord, then the nations
will hammer their swords into ploughshares, their spears into sickles. Nation
will not lift sword against nation, there will be no more training for war. O
House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Psalm
98: Sing a new song to the
Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord
has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has
remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the
earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring
out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music.
Let the sea, the world and
all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers
clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for
he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples
with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Exodus 18: Moses' father-in-law,
Jethro, heard about
all
that God had done for Moses and the Israelites,
so he visited Moses in the desert.
Jethro saw that Moses was struggling
to do so much administration by himself.
Jethro suggested that Moses appoint men to help him:
leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
Moses accepted this advice
and appointed judges as Jethro suggested.
These judges handled all small issues
and referred only difficult cases to Moses.

your temple.
And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in

Moses asked God for help

This
report from the Netherlands has these words:
... the Dutch are much more
aware that a stay in prison does more harm than good. Society may be rid of a
criminal for a while, but in many cases, criminals simply resume their
activities when they leave prison. They may become more ruthless, due to the
violent prison climate in which they have had to survive. And perhaps they have
a wider criminal network that they built up behind bars.
This also applies to shorter sentences. Even these can completely turn an
offender’s life upside down. You can lose your job, home and social network.
And you rarely become a better person during a short stay in jail.

The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.
