Israel's unfathomably cruel war (a "must read" article)

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"

3. In classical Greek, the word kardía denotes the inmost part of human beings, animals and plants. For Homer, it indicates not only the centre of the body, but also the human soul and spirit. In the Iliad, thoughts and feelings proceed from the heart and are closely bound one to another. The heart appears as the locus of desire and the place where important decisions take shape.  In Plato, the heart serves, as it were, to unite the rational and instinctive aspects of the person, since the impulses of both the higher faculties and the passions were thought to pass through the veins that converge in the heart. From ancient times, then, there has been an appreciation of the fact that human beings are not simply a sum of different skills, but a unity of body and soul with a coordinating centre that provides a backdrop of meaning and direction to all that a person experiences.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 31: God said to Moses: "The Israelites must make the Sabbath a holy day each week, because the Sabbath is a sign between you and me. Do not do any ordinary work on the Sabbath. Work for six days, then rest on the Sabbath. Consecrate the Sabbath to me." God's words were inscribed on two stone tablets.
Dear God, please help us to make Sunday a holy day
My recording of this reading

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Listen

1 Peter 5.1-4: To those of you who are elders I say: I am an elder myself, a witness to the sufferings of Christ. Be good shepherds of the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it, not simply as a duty, or for sordid money, but gladly, because that's what God wants you to do. Never be a dictator over any group that is in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When the Chief Shepherd appears, you will be given the crown of unfading glory
Jesus, help pastors and elders be good shepherds

Listen

Mark 14.53-65: The men who arrested Jesus took him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn Jesus to death, even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before their accusations. Then the main leader challenged Jesus: "Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "I am". The leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy". The rest of the leaders shouted "He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists
Jesus, thank you for submitting yourself to insult and spittle for the salvation of the world

Listen

Reflection: When Peter says he was "a witness to the sufferings of Christ", he would be the first to admit that he slept when Jesus prayed in agony in the garden .... and that he ran away when Jesus was arrested .... and that when Jesus was crucified he was not there

 Horrific Israeli bombing in Gaza

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"
2.
The symbol of the heart has often been used to express the love of Jesus Christ. Some have questioned whether this symbol is still meaningful today. Yet living as we do in an age of superficiality, rushing frenetically from one thing to another without really knowing why, and ending up as insatiable consumers and slaves to the mechanisms of a market unconcerned about the deeper meaning of our lives, all of us need to rediscover the importance of the heart

Exodus 30: God said to Moses: "Every morning offer one lamb as a sacrifice for the people. Every evening offer another lamb as a sacrifice for the people. I will meet the people of Israel in the place consecrated to my glory. I will remain with the people of Israel and be their God. They will know that it is I who brought them out of Egypt.
Dear God, you created us, we are your people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Listen

1 Peter 4.13-19: If you have a share in the sufferings of Christ, be glad, because this means you will have an extra share of happiness in the life to come. It is a blessing for you when they insult you for being a Christian. It means you have the Spirit of God resting on you. People who experience suffering for God's sake, must trust themselves to the grace of the Creator, and keep on doing good
Jesus, give strength to persecuted Christians

Listen

John 14.22-24
(for Feast of Saints Simon and Jude): Judas - this was not Judas Iscariot - said to Jesus: "Lord, what is all this about? Do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" Jesus replied:
"If you love me, you will put my words into practice, and my Father will love you, and we shall make our home in your heart"

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Saints Simon and Jude

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"

1. HE LOVED US”, Saint Paul says of Christ (cf. Rom 8:37), in order to make us realize that nothing can ever “separate us” from that love (Rom 8:39). Paul could say this with certainty because Jesus himself had told his disciples, “I have loved you” (Jn 15:9, 12). Even now, the Lord says to us, “I have called you friends” (Jn 15:15). His open heart has gone before us and waits for us, unconditionally, asking only to offer us his love and friendship. For “he loved us first” (cf. 1 Jn 4:10). Because of Jesus, “we have come to know and believe in the love that God has for us” (1 Jn 4:16).

c.f. readings for Sunday 30

Isaiah 35: Strengthen all weary hands, steady all trembling knees, and say to all faint hearts "Courage! Do not be afraid. The Lord is coming to save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy. Exiles will return to Zion shouting for joy, everlasting joy on their faces. Joy and gladness will go with them. Sorrow and lament will be ended.
Lord, please heal the friends I know who are blind, deaf, dumb....

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Listen

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne of grace. He will give us grace when we are in need of help
Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

Listen

Mark 10.46-50: As Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road. Sitting by the road was a man  who had become blind. His name was Bartimaeus ("son of Timaeus"). When he heard that Jesus was going past, he called out "Son of David, have pity on me". Some people tried to stop him from calling out, but he shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and said to him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Lord, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Go, your faith has saved you". Immediately his sight returned, and he followed Jesus along the road
Jesus, please heal my blind friend (.. name ..)

Yesterday morning during breakfast as I watched the latest live news from Gaza on Al Jazeera .... especially the slaughter (no other word) and starvation tactics in Northern Gaza ... I felt moved to make another protest of some sort. So, after going to the High Court for some business I again ... for the third time ...went to the nearby Consulate of Israel .... to hand in a special letter. No staff were present because of Friday prayers, so I just left my letter on a door handle, with my name and phone number. Letter is here. Previous visits to consulates of Israel and the US are here

Exodus 28-29: God said to Moses: "Your brother Aaron and his sons will be priests in my service. Make sacred vestments for them: breast piece, ephod, robe, tunic, turban and sash. You must anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them to serve me as priests.
Dear God, please bless and protect all sacred ministers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Listen

1 Peter 4.3-5: You spent enough time in the past living a careless life, behaving indecently, drinking all the time, having wild parties. Now that you don't do these things anymore, people can't understand why you've changed, and they tell lies about you. They will have to answer for this to him who will judge everyone at the end of their lives
Jesus, rescue young people from wild party life

Listen

Mark 14.43-52: While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived. Judas had with him a large crowd of men with swords and clubs, sent by the religious leaders. Judas had told these men "The one I kiss is the man. Take him". So Judas went  to Jesus and said  "Teacher" and kissed him. The men  then seized Jesus. Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs?  Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles then deserted him and ran away
Jesus, when I am being treated unfairly by other people, please give me strength

Make an altar out of acacia wood. Make altar vessels out of bronze. Make a sacred courtyard to go around the tent. Place a sacred flame outside the veil and keep the flame burning from night till morning."

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Listen

1 Peter 3.8-11: Be agreeable and sympathetic. Love everyone. Have compassion and be self-effacing. Never pay back one wrong with another, or an angry word with another one. Instead, pay back with a blessing. Anyone who wants to have a happy life must banish malice from his tongue; he must avoid evil, do good and seek peace
Jesus, when people are  unkind to me, help me to pray in my heart "Lord, please bless them"

Mark 14.26-42: After the meal, Jesus said to his apostles "Tonight all of you will desert me". Peter said "I will never desert you". Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me  three times". They came to a place with olive trees called Gethsemane. Jesus asked Peter, James and John to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray". Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done". He stood up and found that the apostles were asleep. He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support me?" Three times he prayed the same way. Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready. The one who is betraying me is coming"
Jesus, please help me give more time to prayer

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

1 Peter 3.1-7: Wives, honor and respect your husbands. If some husbands are not yet believers, they may find themselves won over to the Lord, without a word spoken, by the goodness of their wives. Wives, do not dress up for show: special hair style, gold bracelets, expensive clothes - all outside stuff. What matters is what's inside: a sweet and gentle disposition - that's what God likes. Husbands, be kind and thoughtful to your wives, respecting them as equals
Jesus, help husbands and wives imitate your love

Mark 14.17-25:
On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Exodus 24: God invited Moses, Aaron, Nadab and 70 other men to see him face to face. They saw God face to face and ate and drank in his presence. Under God's feet the ground was like a pure blue jewel. God then invited Moses to go up the mountain. A cloud covered the mountain and for 6 days the glory of the Lord settled on the mountain. On the seventh day God spoke with Moses inside the cloud. Moses stayed on the mountain for about 40 days.
Dear God, thank you for times of prayer

My recording of this reading

Psalm 88: Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help. Please turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils. My life is on the brink of the grave. I am reckoned as one in the tomb. I have reached the end of my strength. Will your love be told in the grave? Will your wonders be known in the dark? Fear surrounds me like a flood. All my friends have deserted me. My only companion is darkness.
Lord, please help people who are in despair

1 Peter 2.19-25: If you are treated unfairly, put up with it for the sake of God. Christ suffered for you and left an example for you to follow. He had done nothing wrong. He was insulted and tortured, but did not retaliate. He bore our sins in his own body on the Cross, so that we might die to sin and live for holiness. Through his wounds you have been healed. You were like straying sheep, but now have come back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls
Jesus, please help me put up with difficulties for your sake

Mark 14.1-11: Two days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death. During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper. At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time. The leaders promised to give Judas money. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest
Jesus, forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful  to you and your teaching
