Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"  ((someone pls rewrite this in simple language!))

17. At the same time, the heart makes all authentic bonding possible, since a relationship not shaped by the heart is incapable of overcoming the fragmentation caused by individualism. Two monads may approach one another, but they will never truly connect. A society dominated by narcissism and self-centredness will increasingly become “heartless”. This will lead in turn to the “loss of desire”, since as other persons disappear from the horizon we find ourselves trapped within walls of our own making, no longer capable of healthy relationships. As a result, we also become incapable of openness to God. As Heidegger puts it, to be open to the divine we need to build a “guest house”.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Leviticus 8-10: Moses followed God's instructions and ordained Aaron and his sons as priests. Moses washed them, put special clothing on them, anointed their heads with chrism and offered a special animal sacrifice on their behalf. Then Aaron lifted up his hands towards the people and blessed them. A  flame from the Lord consumed the offering on the altar. The people shouted for joy and fell on their knees. But later on when two of Aaron's sons offered unauthorized fire, a fire from the Lord consumed them. Moses then said: "God expects the highest standard from priests".
Dear God, please bless and protect all priests

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

1 John 3.16-21: This has taught us love: that Jesus gave up his life for us. We too should give up our lives for others. If you see someone in need and refuse to help him, how can the love of God be in you? Our love must be put into practice, not be just words. Anyone who loves God must also love other people
Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

Listen

Luke 1.5-25: When Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth who were really good people, but they were childless. Once when they went to the Temple in Jerusalem, Zechariah entered the inner sanctuary to burn incense, while all the people prayed outside. An angel appeared and said "Zechariah, your prayer has been heard. Your wife will have a son and you must name him John. He will prepare the way of the Lord". Not long after this, Elizabeth conceived, and for 5 months she kept to herself, thanking God for taking away her humiliation at not being able to have a baby
Jesus, please help childless couples to have a baby

Remembrance Day

106 years ago today, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War 1 fighting stopped, after a conflict that involved 65 million men in battle, left nearly 10 million killed, 21 million wounded, with nearly seven million civilian deaths. May the Good Lord help our world avoid war!

Not forgetting that the Treaty of Versailles which ended World War 1 was a major cause of World War 2 (because it treated Germany so harshly) and was the reason for China's young leaders turning away from the West and turning to Marxism/Russia (because China also was treated so badly - see May 4 Movement)

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us" ((how I wish these ideas could be put more clearly and simply!))

16. This unique power of the heart also helps us to understand why, when we grasp a reality with our heart, we know it better and more fully. This inevitably leads us to the love of which the heart is capable, for “the inmost core of reality is love”. For Heidegger, as interpreted by one contemporary thinker, philosophy does not begin with a simple concept or certainty, but with a shock: “Thought must be provoked before it begins to work with concepts or while it works with them. Without deep emotion, thought cannot begin. The first mental image would thus be goose bumps. What first stirs one to think and question is deep emotion. Philosophy always takes place in a basic mood ( Stimmung)”. That is where the heart comes in, since it “houses the states of mind and functions as a ‘keeper of the state of mind’. The ‘heart’ listens in a non-metaphoric way to ‘the silent voice’ of being, allowing itself to be tempered and determined by it”.

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

1 John 3.1-3: Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's children. And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ

Luke 1.1-4: Dear Friend of God, there are  already many  reports written about Jesus. These reports come from  people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report,  so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"

15. The word “heart” proves its value for philosophy and theology in their efforts to reach an integral synthesis. Nor can its meaning be exhausted by biology, psychology, anthropology or any other science. It is one of those primordial words that “describe realities belonging to man precisely in so far as he is one whole (as a corporeo-spiritual person)”.  It follows that biologists are not being more “realistic” when they discuss the heart, since they see only one aspect of it; the whole is not less real, but even more real. Nor can abstract language ever acquire the same concrete and integrative meaning. The word “heart” evokes the inmost core of our person, and thus it enables us to understand ourselves in our integrity and not merely under one isolated aspect.

c.f. readings for Sunday 32

1 Kings 17: When Ahab was king of Israel, in the 9th century B.C., Elijah was a prophet of the Lord. Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain for a long time because the people were following the cult of Baal. Elijah did miracles in the name of the Lord: he blessed a poor widow's food to make it increase, and he brought back to life a young boy who had died.
Dear God, please bless our prayers as you blessed the prayers of Elijah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Hebrews 8-9: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart and protect me

 Listen

Mark 12.41-44: Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor. Many rich people put in a lot of money. A poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus said to his disciples  "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she put in the only money she had"
Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

Sat Nov 9

A long but happy day yesterday began with 7.10am Mass at St Paul's Parish YMT, then some office work, then meeting with bail group, then visit to nearby Kong Wah Hospital with MercyHK case workers for prayer with an elderly homeless man preparing for the best accommodation of all: An Eternal Home in Heaven .... then after a quick lunch and rest to Tsim Sha Tsui for a Voice for Prisoners sharing with about twenty women who all are asylums seekers ...warning them about the danger of being tricked to collect or deliver parcels of drugs ....then back to the Dr Jesus Centre for some special office work to do with my overseas trip after Christmas ... then a meal with some special people at the canteen ...all of whom are active in looking after prisoners, then some more office work, then meeting an overseas man released last night from the immigration centre in Tuen Mun "CIC" ... no accommodation and not even enough money to pay for a taxi .... I paid when he arrived and MercyHK case worker Lucia gave him a room in one of our shelters.  After which a group of hearing and speech impaired people, after meal at canteen, came to Dr Jesus Centre for prayer. Jesus, please bless all the people I met yesterday!

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"

14. It could be said, then, that I am my heart, for my heart is what sets me apart, shapes my spiritual identity and puts me in communion with other people. The algorithms operating in the digital world show that our thoughts and will are much more “uniform” than we had previously thought. They are easily predictable and thus capable of being manipulated. That is not the case with the heart.

Exodus 40: God said to Moses: "On the first day of the first month, consecrate and start using the Tent of Meeting. Use chrism to anoint all the furnishings. Anoint Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests." Moses did everything that God asked. Then a cloud covered the Tent and the glory of God filled the sacred site. At every stage of their journey in the desert, the Israelites would continue their march whenever the cloud rose from the sacred site. A fire shone within the cloud at night
Dear God, please guide us on our way through life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

1 John 2.9-16: Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the dark. Do not love the ungodly values of this world generated by the sensual body, the lustful eye and a pride in possessions. Such things do not come from God
Jesus, please help me avoid worldly values

Listen

Mark 16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved. Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers:
- in my name they will cast out devils
- they will have the gift of tongues
- they will pick up snakes in their hands
- they will be unharmed if they drink poison
- they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed".
And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message

Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"

13. All our actions need to be put under the “political rule” of the heart. In this way, our aggressiveness and obsessive desires will find rest in the greater good that the heart proposes and in the power of the heart to resist evil. The mind and the will are put at the service of the greater good by sensing and savouring truths, rather than seeking to master them as the sciences tend to do. The will desires the greater good that the heart recognizes, while the imagination and emotions are themselves guided by the beating of the heart.

Exodus 39: The skilled workers made the high priest's vestments: his ephod, his breastpiece, his robe.
Vestments were also made for the ordinary priests. When everything for the whole Tent was finished,

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love.

Mark 16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon. Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone, but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he  will see them in Galilee"

Thu Nov 7

Yesterday MercyHK case worker Lucia Leung and I spent most of the day at the High Court securing the bail release of a man from Tanzania. God bless the kind judge! And in my final hour of waiting for the man's release ... at the very second I left the CSD G/F holding area of the High Court, a local lady with a "stop Gaza genocide" sign was walking along the footpath, by herself, on the way to the US Consulate. So I joined her for the walk and heard her story of courage. Outside the consulate the police were waiting for her ... by appointment ... two kind young policemen ... there to protect her from extremists who have mistreated her on several occasions.

Podcast interview with Gary Brightman

L.A. Times owner - did not endorse Kamala Harris because of Gaza genocide - I read every word of this and agree with it completely ... and I think that history will show that the Democratic Party's complicity in Gaza genocide was one reason for win by Donald Trump. Another reason goes with Gaza ... another genocide associated with the Democratic Party, especially with Kamala Harris herself ... the abortion policy of the Democrats

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"

12. It must be said, then, that we have a heart, a heart that coexists with other hearts that help to make it a “Thou”. Since we cannot develop this theme at length, we will take a character from one of Dostoevsky’s novels, Nikolai Stavrogin. Romano Guardini argues that Stavrogin is the very embodiment of evil, because his chief trait is his heartlessness: “Stavrogin has no heart, hence his mind is cold and empty and his body sunken in bestial sloth and sensuality. He has no heart, hence he can draw close to no one and no one can ever truly draw close to him. For only the heart creates intimacy, true closeness between two persons. Only the heart is able to welcome and offer hospitality. Intimacy is the proper activity and the domain of the heart. Stavrogin is always infinitely distant, even from himself, because a man can enter into himself only with the heart, not with the mind. It is not in a man’s power to enter into his own interiority with the mind. Hence, if the heart is not alive, man remains a stranger to himself”.

Pope's new encyclical "He Loved Us"

11. If we devalue the heart, we also devalue what it means to speak from the heart, to act with the heart, to cultivate and heal the heart. If we fail to appreciate the specificity of the heart, we miss the messages that the mind alone cannot communicate; we miss out on the richness of our encounters with others; we miss out on poetry. We also lose track of history and our own past, since our real personal history is built with the heart. At the end of our lives, that alone will matter.

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22 "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The leader of the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus, when he saw how Jesus died, said "Truly this man was a son of God"
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Reflection on the above readings: We cannot even begin to imagine the extent of Jesus' physical and mental suffering during his 6 hours on the Cross
