Hello again from Addis Ababa the capital of Ethiopia where yesterday morning our core team had a long planning meeting with a local friend who will be with us each day in Addis. In the afternoon the same friend went with some of us for a visit to a special place. Thank you for a prayer for the trip. God bless all who made the trip possible

Deuteronomy
9: Moses continued his
speech to the people:
"Listen, Israel, you are soon to cross the Jordan River,
to dispossess nations greater and stronger than yourself.
Know that the Lord your God will go in front of you.
So often in the past you forgot the Lord.
So often you were rebels and did not obey the Lord.
In future you must rebel no more."
Dear
Lord, please don't let me ever rebel against you
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
146: My soul, give
praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes,
in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they
return to clay
and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are
helped by Jacob's God,
whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven
and earth,
the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives
bread to the hungry,
the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who
gives sight to the blind,
who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who
protects the stranger
and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who
loves the just
but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for
ever,
Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust
and faith in you

Acts 1.6-11: On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus
said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the
world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they
watched.
A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said
"Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the
same way as you have seen him leave"
Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I
think and speak and live

Luke
8.4-15:
One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field.
Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them.
Some seeds fell on rocky ground.
They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among
thorns.
When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on
good soil
and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will
are like the seeds on the path.
They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially
are like the seeds on rocky ground.
As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear
but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's
word with good will and
put it into practice
are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest
Jesus, please help me be
good seed!
Listen

Reflection: Surely the problem in today's Gospel was not the seed but the ground! We should pray to be good soil!

Hello from Addis Ababa the capital of Ethiopia where our core team of 4 people arrived late yesterday afternoon from Kampala in Uganda. Our take-off from Kampala was delayed for an hour because of a special passenger - Mr T. A. Selassie, the President of Ethiopia! We did not actually see him but we spoke with some of his security personnel. A good example to other world leaders: fly on common flights rather than your own private plane

8: Moses continued his
speech to the people:
"Remember how the Lord your God
led you for 40 years in the wilderness,
to humble you, to test you, to know your inmost heart
- whether you would keep his commandments or not.
He humbled you, he fed you with manna,
to make you understand that we do not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Learn from this that the Lord your God was training you
as a man trains his child.
Keep the commandments of the Lord your God.
Follow his ways and reverence him.
When you become prosperous in the land that God is giving you,
do not become proud and say your own efforts have brought you success.
Take care and do not forget the Lord your God."
Dear

My
recording of this reading

Psalm
145: I will give you glory, O God my king.
I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendour and glory. The Lord is kind and full of
compassion,
slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,
and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words
and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall
and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food
each day. The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy
name,
for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love.
Thank you for your love

Acts 1.1-5: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the
Gospel of Luke) I wrote
about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to
his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God.
He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had
promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit".
Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit, increase your influence in my life

Luke
8.1-3: Jesus went to many towns and villages,
proclaiming the Good News.
The 12 apostles went with him, as did a group of women who had been healed
of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna and
several others.
These women used their own money to support Jesus and the apostles
Jesus, thank you for all the women who support

Isaiah 41-42: The Lord says to his
people Israel: "I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be
afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give
you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my
chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit
that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout
aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the
cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from
prison".
Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus
My

Psalm
104: Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the
wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink
to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants
to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to
make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the
time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made
them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life.
All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have
their fill. You
send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the
earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

Luke
3.15-22: John the Baptist
said to the people "I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful
than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. I am not fit to undo the strap of
the powerful one's sandals". Jesus
then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his
baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a
dove. And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor
rests on you".
Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please
increase your influence in my life

Reflection on the above readings: On this day in previous years, Pope Francis has reminded us to remember and celebrate our own day of baptism, just as we remember and celebrate our day of birth (... my baptism: November 3).TThis is the only time in the Bible where the Three Persons of the Trinity can be said to have been "physically" present: The Father's voice was heard, the Son was baptised, the Spirit came down as a dove. My reflection for today led to the composition of this little song

It is you that the Lord our God has chosen
to be his very own people out of all the peoples on the earth.
But know this:
if the Lord set his heart on you and chose you,
it was not because you outnumbered other peoples.
In fact you were the least of all peoples.
It was for love of you and to keep his promise to our ancestors
that the Lord chose you.
Listen then to these ordinances, be true to them and observe them,
and in return the Lord your God will be true to you.
He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers.
He will bless the fruit of your body and the produce of your soil,

No man or woman among will shall be barren,

The leader was thinking "If Jesus is a prophet, he would know what

came into your house and you did not follow the custom of pouring water on
my feet. But this woman has poured out her tears on my feet. You gave me no welcoming kiss, but she has
been covering my feet with kisses. You gave me no welcoming oil on my

Luke
7.18-30: John the Baptist, imprisoned by King Herod,

Jesus replied "Go and tell John
what you have seen today: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are
cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is
proclaimed to the poor". Jesus then spoke to the people about John:
"Everyone who accepted baptism from John acknowledged God's plan. But
by refusing baptism from him, the religious leaders thwarted what God had

thwart your plan for my life

all but one of our team yesterday visited some of the centres of an NGO which

I discovered that 2 young men whose on-site bread I have been buying the past

Moses continued his
talk to the Israelites:
"God has been with us these 40 years,
watching over us and providing for us.
God gave us many victories
and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies.
So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws.
Do not forget the things your eyes have seen.
Make sure to tell these things to your children's children.
God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people.
If you seek God with all your heart and soul
you will find him
Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart:
The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below,
he and no other.
Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today,
so that you and your children may prosper and live long
in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever."

deserves this of you. He is friendly to our people. He is the one who
built our prayer hall". Jesus went with them, but before they
reached the house the centurion sent some servants with the message
"Sir, I am not worthy to receive you into my house. This is why I
didn't come to you personally. Just say a word, and my servant will
be healed". When Jesus heard these words, he said to the
crowd following him
"I have not found faith as great as this man's". When the messengers got back to the house,
they saw that the servant was healed and in perfect health
"Jesus, I am not worthy to receive
you. Say but the word and I shall be healed" (prayer
from Communion service)
