Readings are from Simple Bible

Deuteronomy 19-21: Moses' teaching: "A life for a life, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot. When you go to war, the following men are excused from fighting: a man who has not yet dedicated his newly-built house; a man who has planted a vineyard and not yet enjoyed its fruit; a man who is engaged to be married; a man who is fearful and faint of heart.
Dear Lord, help me to understand how Jesus taught us to love our enemies and not to take revenge
My recording of this reading

Psalm 3: When people make fun of me for believing in you, Lord, I deeply remember how you are my help and my shield. Even when the whole world seems against me, I can go to bed and sleep easy, knowing that you protect me. O Lord, please rescue me from people who plot against me. Lord our savior, please bless everyone who needs help.
Lord, thank you for your protection and help

Listen

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group
Jesus, please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life

Listen

Luke 9.18-21: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets come back to life". Jesus then asked them" And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Anointed One of God
Jesus, please help more and more people know you and love you

Reflection: Today's words in Deuteronomy about revenge cause some Bible scholars to think that such words came from Moses rather than from God

Hello again from Addis Ababa the capital of Ethiopia. Yesterday was a rest day and office-catch-up day for our team. At lunch time, as on a number of previous occasions on the trip, we met some very friendly young businessmen from China. China has helped Ethiopia with many projects ... including the beautiful new airport terminal.
Thank you for a prayer for the trip. God bless all who made the trip possible

Deuteronomy 16-18: Moses' teaching: "Remember the special feasts and days that you must observe. Appoint judges for the people. Do not pervert the law. You must be fair, you must not take bribes. No bribes, no corruption. Do not practise divination, soothsaying. No one may be an augur or sorcerer. Do not use charms, do not consult ghosts or spirits. Instead, be entirely faithful to the Lord your God."
Dear Lord, please help people avoid astrology and fortune tellers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 2: Why are the nations revolting against God? Why won't the nations accept God? O kings and rulers of the nations, listen to God's voice. Serve the Lord with love and honor. Blessed are the nations that love the Lord
Let all the nations love you, Lord. Let all the nations love you

Listen

Acts 2.22-36: Peter said to the crowd "You know that Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he worked. This same Jesus has been raised from the dead by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection. Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand. He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy Spirit on us. Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is the Messiah and he is Lord"
Jesus, Messiah Lord, please pour your Holy Spirit into my heart

Listen

Luke 9.10-17: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus answered "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please make leaders do more to help the starving people of the world

Listen

Reflection: Jesus' name in Chinese is "Ye So". The character "Ye" has 2 parts ... above. The left hand part means "fish" and right hand part can mean "bread"!

c.f. readings for Sunday 2

Isaiah 62: About Zion I will not be silent, about Jerusalem I will not grow weary, until her integrity shines out like the dawn and her salvation flames like a torch. The nations then will see your integrity, all the kings your glory, and you will be called by a new name, one which the mouth of the Lord will confer. You are to be a crown of splendour in the hand of the Lord, a princely diadem in the hand of your God; no longer are you to be named "Forsaken", nor your land "Abandoned", but you shall be called "My Delight" and your land "The Wedded"; for the Lord takes delight in you and your land will have its wedding. Like a young man marrying a virgin, so will the one who built you wed you, and as the bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so will your God rejoice in you.

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens. Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor.
Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

1 Corinthians 12.4-10: The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts. Some people have the gift of wise preaching. Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith. Some people have the gift of healing sick people. Some people have other gifts like the power of miracles, prophecy, recognizing spirits, and the ability to speak in tongues
Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life. Please give me the gift of (.. name ...)

 Listen

John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold more than 70 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus.
Jesus, help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Dear Lord, make me more generous towards poor people

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death.
Dear Lord, please help me do good and avoid evil

Acts 2.11-18: When people heard the apostles' group speaking in many different languages, some said the apostles were drunk. Peter stood up with the Eleven and said to the crowd: These people are not drunk. It's only 9am....too early to drink. What is happening is what God said through the prophet Joel: 'I, the Lord, will pour out my spirit on all peoples. They will prophesy and see visions. I will pour out my spirit on everyone'
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on all peoples, all nations

Luke 9.1-6: Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He gave them power and authority to cast out devils and to heal sick people. He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing sick people

in the eyes of the Lord your God
. If anyone, even someone from your own family, tries to get you to worship a false god, have nothing to do with that person"

Psalms 149-150: Sing a new song to the Lord. Let the praise of God be always on our lips. Praise God in his holy temple. Praise him in the heavens. O praise him with sound of trumpet. Praise him with lute and harp. Praise him with drums and dancing. Praise him with strings and pipes. Let everything that lives and breathes, give praise to the Lord our Creator.  Alleluia!

Acts 2.1-4: About ten days after Jesus' ascension to heaven was the Feast of Pentecost. Jesus' 12 apostles, his mother, several other women, and his brothers were together in one room. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me. Fall afresh on our world

Luke 8.40-56: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was dying. As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.  Her bleeding stopped at that moment. Jesus knew what  had happened  and said to her "My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace". Before  Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived and said to the official "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James, John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying. She is not dead, but asleep".  They laughed at him, since they knew she was dead. Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get up".  Her spirit returned and she got up at once
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal sick people
and raise the dead

Deuteronomy 11: Moses continued his speech to the people: "You must love the Lord your God. Remember this day, how it was you who heard these words, not your children. It is your eyes that have seen the great works God has done. Keep the Lord's commandments, so that you may have strength to conquer the land God is giving you. That land is a land of hills and valleys watered by rain from heaven. If you love the Lord your God with all your heart the Lord will give your land its rain in due season, autumn and spring, so that you may harvest your corn, your wine and your oil. But if you forget the Lord your God and worship other gods, then the heavens will be closed and produce no rain. See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: a blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord our God; a curse if you disobey the commandments of the Lord our God."
Dear Lord, please help us to obey you and never forget you, and please give rain to places that urgently need it

My recording of this reading

Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels, praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord. His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars. Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens, old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the Lord. He is the praise of all who love him.
Lord our God and Creator, you are worthy of all praise

Listen

Acts 1.15-26: During these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples: "As you know, Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now choose someone to take Judas' place, someone who has been with us since the time when John was baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and Matthias. After prayer was offered, Matthias was chosen. He was listed as one of the 12 apostles
Jesus, please protect your church from betrayal and disloyalty

Luke 8.22-25:
Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up  and said "Master,  we are sinking". Jesus ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. The disciples said to each other "Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."
Jesus, please calm the storms in my life

Deuteronomy 10: Moses continued his speech to the people: "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you? Only this: to love and honor the Lord, to follow all his ways, to serve him with all your heart and all your soul, to keep the commandments and laws of the Lord that for your good I set before you today. Circumcise your heart and be obstinate no longer. The Lord your God is great and good. He it is you must praise, he is your God. It is he who sees justice done for the orphan and widow, who loves the stranger and gives him food and clothing. You too must love the stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt."
Dear Lord, please help me love you as I should

My recording of this reading

Psalm 147: Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.
It is right and fitting to praise and love you, Lord our Creator

Listen

Acts 1.12-14: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers
Jesus, your apostles' group spent special time in prayer preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit. I now ask them in heaven to pray that the Holy Spirit will increase his influence in my life

Luke 8.19-21: Jesus' mother and his brothers came looking for him. They could not get to him because of the crowd. Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers want to see you". Jesus replied "My mother and brothers are people who hear the word of God and put it into practice"
Jesus, please help me put your word into practice in my daily life
