Tues Feb 18

Yesterday morning at St Teresa's Church in Kowloon,  Cardinal Stephen Chow was main celebrant of a special Mass for the 50th Anniversary of the Oblate Primary School in Tokwawan ... and the O.M.I. Feb 17 feast day (see blog of Feb 17, below). The OPS and nearby Notre Dame secondary college help more hearing-impaired students than any other ordinary schools in the whole of HK ... with a special program run in conjunction with the Chinese University of HK.

Judges 3: Some of the Israelites forgot the Lord their God and worshipped false gods. As a result, they were enslaved by the king of Edom for 8 years. They cried to God for help and God raised up Othniel, a nephew of Caleb, to lead and rescue them. Then the land enjoyed peace for 40 years. But when Othniel died, the Israelites again began to do what displeases the Lord, and were again enslaved, this time by Eglon king of Moab, for 18 years.

Once more they cried to the Lord for help and he raised up Ehud, a left-hander. As Ehud presented tribute to Eglon, he said to Eglon: "I have a secret message for you". When they were alone, Eglon thought he was safe, because Ehud's knife was on his right thigh. Ehud then used his left-hand to grab the knife unexpectedly and killed Eglon. Ehud escaped from the king's quarters before the king's attendants knew Eglon was dead. Ehud then roused the Israelites to fight and defeat the Moabites,
after which the land enjoyed peace for 80 years

Lord, please raise up good leaders in every country

Psalms 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you, you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you, confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

Acts 11.19-26: Some believers went to Antioch in Syria where they preached the Good News of the Lord Jesus to non-Jewish people. Many non-Jewish people became believers. Barnabas, a good man filled with the Holy Spirit, was sent to Antioch in Syria to encourage the new believers to remain faithful to the Lord. Barnabas brought Paul from Tarsus to Antioch. They stayed in Antioch one year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the believers were first called "Christians"
Jesus, please help me be a good Christian

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them.
A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything.
Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son".

But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to
have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Ugandan visitors at yesterday's Mass at Dr Jesus Centre for a special group of domestic workers shocked everyone present with stories about women from Uganda going to Oman and other countries in the Middle East as domestic workers ... but then being tortured and killed ... and their organs harvested and sold. With dead bodies almost daily being returned to Uganda ... and Ugandan officials complicit in the whole affair. And some women killed in the Middle East in ritual sacrifice. Many reports here

Judges 1-2: After the death of Joshua, the Israelites continued their campaign to occupy all parts of the land of Canaan. But as time went on, the Israelites began to forget the Lord their God. As a result, things went wrong for the Israelites. To help them, the Lord appointed judges to lead them. For a while the people followed the judges. But as soon as a judge died, the people again lapsed into idolatry
Dear God, please don't let me forget you. Please help me pray to you and love you every day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Listen

Acts 10.1-48: Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea. He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people. One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter would visit him. In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius. Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his household. While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers  who had accompanied Peter were astonished
that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people

Holy Spirit, please come down on all peoples everywhere!

Luke 14.12-14: Jesus said to the meal guests "When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, family, or rich neighbors. Rather, when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled,
the lame, the blind. That they cannot repay you means you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again"

c.f. readings for Sunday 6

Jeremiah 17.5-8: The Lord says this: "A curse on people who put their trust in humans, who rely on things of flesh, whose  hearts turn from the Lord. They are like dry scrub in the wastelands: if good comes, they have no eyes for it, they settle in the parched places of the wilderness, a salt land, uninhabited. A blessing on people who put their trust in the Lord, with the Lord for their hope. They are like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it feels no alarm, its foliage stays green; it has no worries in a year of drought, and never ceases to bear fruit."

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death
Dear Lord, please help me do good and avoid evil

Luke 6.20-26: Jesus said to his disciples "Blessed are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry: you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy. Blessed are you when people hate you because of me: your reward will be great in heaven. But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world. Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep".
Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

Reflection on the above readings:  On the one hand a curse, the Way of Death. On the other hand a blessing, the Way of Life. This is the fundamental choice we face right through life, from our earliest to our final days. As individuals, as groups, as nations

Joshua 23-24: As Joshua neared the end of his life, he urged the Israelites to stay faithful to the Lord
while living with many foreign neighbours:
"Continue to observe everything written by Moses. Do not mingle with the foreign peoples still among you. Do not utter the names of their gods. Stay loyal to the Lord your God. Love the Lord your God. If you stay faithful, the Lord will bless you. If you are unfaithful, everything will go wrong for you. Choose today whom you will serve: the Lord our God, or false gods. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
Dear Lord, may Joshua's dying words be true for me: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord"
My recording of this reading

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

Joshua 22: The campaign to subdue the whole land had taken a long time. Joshua especially thanked the tribes from across the Jordan for their help. These tribes - Reuben, Gad and Manasseh - had been
given land on the Eastern side of the Jordan, but still helped in the campaign to control the Western side. Joshua said to them: "Despite the fact that the campaign has lasted so long, you have loyally helped your brothers. Keep on loving the Lord your God, following his paths. Be loyal to him and serve him with all your heart."

Dear Lord, please help me to be loyal - to you, to my family and to my country

Acts 9.20-31: After a few days, Paul began preaching in the prayer halls that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed at Paul's conversion. As time passed, the Jews planned to kill Paul. Paul heard of this and decided to leave the city. The Jews kept watch at the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him to Tarsus. After this the churches throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria were left in peace. They steadily grew, strengthened by the Holy Spirit

Luke 14.1-6: One Sabbath day Jesus went for a meal to the house of a religious leader. In the house Jesus saw a man with dropsy. Then Jesus said to the leaders "Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day?" Again  the leaders remained silent

Joshua 11-21: Some kings in the north combined to fight the Israelites. But the Lord delivered them into the power of Israel. Eventually the whole country had rest from war, and the land was divided up among the 11 tribes. So it was that the Lord gave the Israelites all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors. They took possession of it and settled there. The Lord granted them peace on all their frontiers just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Of all the promises that the Lord had made to the House of Israel, not one failed. All were fulfilled.
Dear Lord, please give peace to nations troubled by war

Psalm 31: Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow. Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me. Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do" Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him

How often have I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her

Joshua 10: Five kings in the southern part of the land made war on Gibeon. The Gibeonites appealed to Joshua for help.
