Ruth 1-2: In the days of the judges, there was famine in the land. Because of the famine, a man from Bethlehem named Elimelech moved to Moab. Elimelech took with him his wife Naomi and his two sons. Elimelech died. The two sons married Moabite women: Orpah and Ruth. But then the two sons also died. Naomi was heart-broken. She had lost her husband and two sons. She decided to return to Bethlehem and told her daughters-in-law to go back to their own homes. Orpah went back to her people. But Ruth with great loyalty and love chose to go with Naomi. Ruth said:

"Wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live. Your people shall be my people. Your God shall be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried."

Dear God, in time of trouble, please help people to be loyal and kind to each other

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Acts 16.16-24: One day we met a slave girl who made a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. The girl followed us each day shouting "These are the servants of God". Paul said to the spirit possessing her "I order you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to leave her". The spirit immediately left her, but her owners were angry that she could no longer tell fortunes. The owners seized Paul and Silas and dragged them to court, saying to the magistrate "These people are causing a disturbance in our city". A crowd supported the owners in calling for their punishment. They were given many lashes and put into prison with their feet in irons
Jesus, please help Christians who are suffering in prison because they announced your message

Luke 20.45-47: After some  leaders had asked him some trick questions, Jesus said to his disciples "Beware of the religious leaders who like to walk about in special clothes and love to be greeted obsequiously in the market places. They like the front seats in prayer halls and the places of honor at banquets. They like making a show of lengthy prayers. But at the same time they steal the property of widows. They will receive a severe sentence from God at the end of their lives
Jesus, please help religious leaders be good people

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. Acts 16.11-15: We went to a number of towns in Macedonia. In Philippi, the Jews had no prayer hall. They met on the river bank. Luke 19.41-48: As Jesus caught sight of Jerusalem, he shed tears over it and said "How I wish you had accepted my message of peace. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers' den". Each day Jesus taught in the Temple. The leaders wanted to do away with him, but they didn't know how to, since most of the ordinary  people had great respect for Jesus

c.f. readings for Sunday 8

Sirach 25-28: Happy the husband of a really good wife. A good wife is the joy of her husband. Do not praise a person before they have spoken. A person's speech reveals what sort of person is speaking. Among stupid people look for an opportunity to leave, but among thoughtful people take your time. Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of an arrogant person. Resentment and anger are bad for everyone. Forgive others if they have offended you. Then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Avoid quarrelling and losing your temper. Do not let your mouth speak scandal.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to control my speech

My recording of this reading

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

1 Corinthians 15.54-58: When this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the words of Scripture will come true: "Death has been defeated. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?" Never give up, dear friends, never admit defeat. Keep on working at the Lord's work always. Know that, in the Lord, no work is in vain.
Jesus, please give me more faith  to "keep going"

Luke 6.41-45: In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you notice the splinter in someone else's eye, but don't notice the plank in your own eye?  Deal with your own faults before you start correcting other people. A good tree does not produce bad fruit. A bad tree does not produce good fruit. The fruit tells you what sort of tree it came from. So with people: their words and actions tell you what their heart is like - good or bad
Jesus, please help me be a good person, producing good fruit

Judges 16: Samson went to Gaza and entered the house of a prostitute. The men of Gaza tried to capture Samson but he eluded them. Samson then fell in love with a woman called Delilah. The Philistine leaders pressured Delilah to find out the secret of Samson's great strength. Day after day Delilah pestered Samson until he told her his secret: "A razor has never touched my head, because I have been specially dedicated to God from my birth. If my hair is cut, I will lose my strength."

Delilah then cut Samson's hair while he was asleep and called the Philistines to capture him. The Philistines bound Samson, put out his eyes and chained him in a prison in Gaza. But in prison, Samson's hair began to grow again. The Philistines held a special ceremony in a large building
to celebrate the capture of Samson. They paraded Samson at the ceremony and then made him stand between two pillars.

Samson prayed to God for strength one more time and the Lord heard his prayer. He then used his great strength to pull down the main pillars supporting the building. In this way, at his death, Samson killed more Philistines than before he went to prison.

Dear Lord, you once gave special strength to Samson. Please give me strength to face the battles of life

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Acts 16.1-10: In the town of Lystra, Paul recruited Timothy, whose mother was a Jewish Christian and whose father was Greek. As they visited one town after another, they announced the decisions taken in Jerusalem about what Jewish practices to follow. The local churches continued to grow strong in faith as well as grow in numbers. One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and said "Come across to Macedonia and help us". We immediately crossed the sea to Macedonia (Luke was now with Paul)

Luke 19.28-40: When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples  spread their clothes on the road, and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord, we praise and love you

Judges 15: When Samson found out his wife had been given to someone else he took his revenge on the Philistines by setting fire to their crops. The Philistines then attacked the land of Judah, trying to capture Samson. To avoid war with the Philistines, the men of Judah bound Samson with ropes and handed him over to the Philistines. But as the Philistines approached him, Samson was filled with the spirit of the Lord and broke free from the ropes. He saw a dead donkey's jawbone on the ground and used this to strike down many Philistines before making his escape. Samson was judge in Israel for 20 years.

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. But because of his short stature he couldn't see over the crowd. So he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him up the tree and said "Zacchaeus, come down, because I will stay at your house today". Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus warmly. People complained "He's gone to stay at the house of an outcast". Zacchaeus replied "Sir, I am going to give half of my property to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I'll pay them back fourfold". Jesus said to him "Today salvation has come to this house"

Judges 14: Samson wanted to marry a Philistine woman, even though custom required he marry an Israelite. On his way to visit the woman in Philistine territory, Samson was confronted by a young lion. The spirit of the Lord filled Samson and he tore the lion to pieces with his bare hands. On his next visit to the woman's home, Samson saw that in the carcass of the dead lion there was a swarm of bees, and honey. The people of the village made a wedding feast for 7 days. But they were scared of Samson so they assigned 30 men to stay with him. Samson challenged them to answer a riddle: if they got the right answer before the 7 days were over, he would give them 30 pieces of silver and 30 festal robes. But if they failed to get the right answer, they had to give Samson 30 pieces of silver and 30 robes. They agreed to the challenge.

Samson stated his riddle: "Out of the eater came what is eaten, out of the strong came what is sweet". Three days went by and they could not solve the riddle. So they asked Samson's wife to find out the answer. Day after day she pestered Samson with pleading and tears until, on the 7th day, he told her. She then told the men. The men then said to Samson: "What is sweeter than honey, and what is stronger than a lion?" Samson then went to a nearby Philistine town and killed 30 men there. He took their robes and gave them to the 30 wedding feast guests. Full of anger, he stormed out of the village
and returned to his parents' house. His wife was then given to the companion who had been his best man.

Dear God, please help me control my anger

Acts 15.1-29: Some Jewish Christians came to Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and decided to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there. During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people. James  spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers: "All we ask you to do is to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood from the meat of strangled animals, from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right"

He replied "Sir, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you". Instantly his sight returned, and he followed Jesus, praising God.

Yesterday afternoon at the Indonesian Consulate, Flora and Jane from Voice for Prisoners joined me for a sharing with around 200 domestic workers  .... about the danger of collecting/delivering drug parcels, the danger of false ID cards, the danger of money laundering, and the danger of over-staying. Helping us were four Indonesian women who used to be in prison: two of them present with us, two of them joining us by phone. One of the phone ladies had been released only one hour before the sharing (!) after we arranged for her bail to be paid yesterday morning (only HK$500 but she was in prison for 2 months because she could not raise $500. I received a letter from her on Monday afternoon, and yesterday a kind friend went to a court and paid the money ... then took a release letter to the prison).

Judges 12-13: Jephthah was judge in Israel for 6 years. For the following 25 years, Ibzan (7 years), Elon (10 years) and Abdon  (8 years) were judges. After these judges, the Israelites again were unfaithful to the Lord and so they were oppressed by the Philistines for 40 years. It was then that the angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah's wife and said to her:

"You are barren and have had no child. But you will soon conceive and bear a son. No razor is to touch his head, for he shall be dedicated to the Lord from his mother's womb. It is he who will rescue Israel from the Philistines". The woman gave birth to a son and called him Samson. The child grew and the Lord blessed him.

Dear Lord, please bless all barren women

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forget God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Acts 14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium. They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders. Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people

On the third day I will rise from the dead". But the apostles had no idea what his words meant.
