Samuel 9-10: Among the men of the tribe of Benjamin
there was a very tall and very handsome man named Saul. Once when he went in search of his father's
stray donkeys,
he met up with Samuel. The Lord had told Samuel that he would meet
Saul,
and that he should be anointed as king. And so Samuel took some oil and poured it on
Saul's head.
He told Saul that the Lord had chosen him to be king. Samuel presented Saul to the people.
The people acclaimed Saul saying "Long live the king!"
Dear Lord, please protect and
guide all people in authority

Psalm
87: On
the holy mountain is Jerusalem,
the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told
glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love
the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all
shall be her children.
In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a
home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place
of peace and prayer for all peoples

Acts
19.23 - 20.1: In Ephesus there was a silversmith who
employed many craftsmen making shrines of the local idol, Diana. The
silversmith called a meeting of the city's silversmiths and said to them
"Not just here in Ephesus, but in many parts of the region, this man
Paul has converted many people with his argument that gods made by hand
are not gods at all. This is a threat to our trade".
A mob was formed and dragged two of Paul's
companions to a local theatre. The town clerk eventually calmed the mob
and dismissed them. By now Paul had decided to leave Ephesus. He
went to Greece and spent three months there
Jesus, please help people give up the worship
of idols made by human hands

Luke
23.26-34: As Jesus was being led to the place of
crucifixion, a man named Simon was coming into Jerusalem from
the country.
He was made to carry the cross behind Jesus. Large numbers of people followed him,
including women who mourned for him. Jesus said to them "Daughters of
Jerusalem, do not weep for me. Weep rather for yourselves and for your
children. For if this is how innocent people are treated, what will happen
to people who are guilty?" Two criminals were led out with Jesus to be
crucified with him
Jesus, please help me to carry my cross each
day

Reflection: Jesus' words to the women are only in Luke ... Luke as usual gives a special focus to women .... and Jesus' words refer to the destruction of Jerusalem around 70 A.D.

Samuel 8:
When Samuel grew old, the people asked him to
find someone
to be their king. Samuel was not happy that the people asked for
a king.
Samuel also warned the people that a king would impose taxes
and have many rights over them. But the people insisted on having a king.
The Lord then told Samuel to give the people a king.
Dear God, you are our only true
King

Psalm
86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer
for I am poor and needy.
O Lord, you are good and forgiving,
full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you
and glorify your name, O Lord,
you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart
so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my
heart
for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant
and save your handmaid's son.
Dear Lord, thank you for
all your
love

Acts 19.11-20: So remarkable were the miracles worked by God
through Paul, that even handkerchiefs which had touched him,
were taken to the sick, and they were healed and evil spirits came out of
them. Some believers admitted how they had practised
magic. They collected their expensive books on magic and burnt them in
public. Things like these helped the word of the Lord
to continue spreading
Jesus, what can I do to help your message
spread?

Luke
23.13-25: Pilate said to the religious leaders and to
the people "You brought this man before me as a political agitator.
Neither Herod nor I have found a case against the man. He has done nothing
deserving death. I shall have him flogged and then let him go". But the leaders and people screamed out "Away with him. Crucify
him!" Pilate asked "Why? What harm has he
done?"
They kept shouting "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate then gave in to them and handed Jesus over for crucifixion
Jesus, how great your mental suffering must
have been as the crowd shouted for your death

unexpectedly, the heavens opened and the rain poured down!

27: The Lord is my light and my
help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom
shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There
is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the
Lord all the days of my life. It
is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will
see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and
take heart. Hope in the Lord!

Luke
9.28-36: One day Jesus
took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray. On the
mountain, while Jesus was praying, his
whole appearance changed. His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The
prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus
"Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered
them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the
Beloved. Listen to him". When the voice had finished speaking, the
disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

Samuel 7: The Sacred Chest was taken from the town of
Beth-shemesh
to the town of Kiriath-jearim, to the house of Abinadab,
whose son Eleazar was consecrated to guard the Chest. After 20 more years, the Israelites again
longed for freedom from the Philistines. Samuel gathered all the Israelites at
Mizpah,
where after prayer,
battle was joined with the Philistines who were defeated. The Philistines no longer came into Israelite
territory.
Samuel was judge over all Israel for the rest of his life.
During Samuel's time, the Philistines no longer troubled Israel.
There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites. Each year Samuel went on circuit around the
country
to judge cases of law. He would then return to his home town of Ramah
and continue his work as a judge from there.
Dear God, please give the world
more leaders like Samuel
My

Psalm
85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say,
a voice that speaks of peace.
Peace for his people and his friends
and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him
and his glory will dwell in our land.
Mercy and faithfulness have met.
Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth
and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper
and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him
and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to
our world

Acts
19.8-10: For three months, Paul went to the Jewish
prayer hall in Ephesus, speaking boldly about the kingdom of God. When some Jews strongly attacked the Way, he
stopped going to the prayer hall, and began daily discussions in a lecture room.
He kept doing this for two years, with the
result that people from many places, both Jews and non-Jews, were able to
hear the word of God

22.66 - 23.12: At daybreak there was a meeting of the
religious leaders.
Jesus was brought before them. They asked him "Are you the Son of
God?". He replied "Yes".
They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the Roman governor,
Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said "I find no case against
him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent
him back to Pilate

84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord.
My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your
temple guests.
They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in
your temple.
And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in
their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life,
you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple
is better than a thousand anywhere else.

Acts 19.1-7: Paul left Corinth and went to the city of
Ephesus where he found a dozen men who had been baptized by John the
Baptist. He asked them "Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you became believers?" They replied "We have not been taught
about the Holy Spirit". When Paul explained Jesus to them, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Paul then prayed with them using
the laying on of hands, and the Holy Spirit came down on them. They began

1 Samuel 5:
The Philistines took the captured Sacred Chest
to the shrine of Dagon in one of their towns. Next morning, they found the statue of Dagon
on its face on the ground, in front of the Sacred Chest. They picked Dagon up and put him back in his
place.
But next morning he was down again,
with his head and hands cut off from the rest of his body. While the Sacred Chest was in the Philistine
town,
the people there were struck with tumors and many people died. The people told their leaders to take the
Sacred Chest
back to Israel where it belonged.

Psalms 82-83: God says to corrupt officials:
"How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor?
You should do justice for the weak and the orphan.
You should defend the afflicted and the needy.
You should rescue the weak and the poor.
You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from

18.5-11: In Corinth, Paul was rejected by the Jews, so
he spent his time preaching to non-Jewish people. Many Corinthians became
believers and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:

am with you". So Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months preaching the word

Luke 22.54-62: The men who arrested Jesus took him to the
home of the main religious leader. Peter followed at a distance. As Peter sat by a fire in the courtyard, a
servant-girl said "This man was with Jesus". Peter replied
"Woman I do not know him". A little while later, another person said
"You are one of them". Peter replied "I am not". About an hour later, a man said "He was
certainly with them. He is from Galilee". Peter replied "I do
not know what you are talking about". While he was still speaking, a rooster crowed,
and the Lord looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord
had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three
times". Peter went outside and cried bitterly
Jesus, don't let me ever deny that I
know you
Listen

Reflection: Even though Peter had seen so many miracles done by Jesus ....healings, exorcisms, multiplication of loaves and fishes, calming of storms ....and had seen Jesus' glory at the Transfiguration ... yet he still failed the rooster test. And even though Peter failed the rooster test, Jesus did not dismiss him, but strengthened him to continue as leader of the apostolic group
