Tues April 8

Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison from 10.30am to 5.30pm .... and ran out of time to see all the men I wanted to see. Will have to wait till next time. As usual I was sad to meet new drug mules, local and overseas ... some of them tricked by Facebook "fast money job" advertisements

Readings are from Simple Bible

2 Samuel 12: The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David. Nathan said: "Why did you do what is displeasing to the Lord?" David replied: "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan said: "The Lord forgives you, but because of your sin, the child will die." After the child died, Bathsheba conceived another son by David, whom she named Solomon. The Lord specially blessed Solomon.
"Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence"
(David's prayer in Psalm 51)

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Acts 27.39-44: The next day they could see land: a bay with a beach. They tried to reach the beach, but the ship ran aground on a reef and began to break up. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to stop them from escaping, but Julius would not allow this. Some people swam. Some used pieces of wreckage. All of them got to shore safely

John 8.21-30:

Jesus said to the Pharisees:
‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man,
then you will know that I am He
and that I do nothing of myself:
what the Father has taught me is what I preach;
he who sent me is with me,
and has not left me to myself,
for I always do what pleases him.’
As he was saying this, many came to believe in him.

Reflection: Jesus' listeners would have understood the meaning of "lifted up"

Mon April 7

To try to stop drug trafficking and financial fraud etc in HK, yesterday afternoon my two Voice for Prisoners colleagues Jane and Flora joined me for another special presentation:
2025-04--06-workshop.jpg (79407 bytes)

Yesterday's presentation was quite near the US Consulate, and if I hadn't had another appointment I was tempted to make another protest at the Consulate - like previous ones. In fact, as I hear daily reports about Israel's use of starvation in Gaza, I pray that manna and quail might come from Heaven, as happened for the Israelites when they were in the desert for 40 years!

2 Samuel 10-11: The Ammonites went to war with the Israelites, but David led the Israelites to victory. During a further war with the Ammonites, David stayed in Jerusalem and did not go to the battle. While in Jerusalem, he made love to Bathsheba the wife of Uriah who conceived and sent word to David, "I am with child." David recalled Uriah to Jerusalem and tried to get him to sleep with his wife. But Uriah loyally observed the custom of the time and refrained from marital relations since he was a soldier at war. David then arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle by having him stationed in a defenceless position. After a time of mourning for Uriah, Bathsheba became David's wife and bore him a son. The Lord was displeased with David.
Dear God, help us not to displease you
My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.
Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Acts 27.21-37: Paul then spoke to everyone: Don't despair. There will be no loss of life. Last night an angel of God said to me: "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to go to Rome. Therefore God grants you the safety of all who are sailing with you". On the 14th day, Paul took some bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it and  gave it to everyone to eat. This gave them courage. There were 276 of them on the ship

Jesus, give light to my life. Increase my love for your teaching. Help me learn more about truth

Isaiah 43-45: The Lord says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine. If you travel over the seas, I will be with you. If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior. They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood, those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear. Turn to me and be saved all peoples of the world.
Lord, please help me be more aware of your protection each day and night

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Philippians 3.7-11: Because of Christ, I have come to consider all my former advantages as a scholar as disadvantages. Nothing is more important than knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. I want to share his sufferings by carrying the Cross with him. This is the way I can hope to receive eternal life.
Christ Jesus my Lord, knowing you is No. 1

John 8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you say?"  They said this to test him, looking for something to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied. "Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The leaders' sins? "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could claim innocence?"

(Psalm 130)

2 Samuel 8-9: Wherever David went, the Lord gave him success and victory. David  showed kindness to Saul's family. Meribbaal, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul was crippled in both feet.
David restored Saul's property to Meribbaal and arranged for Meribbaal to eat at the royal table each day.

Acts 27.9-20: Navigation at that time of the year was dangerous, since winter was starting. But the ship's captain set sail hoping to reach Phoenix, a harbor in Crete. Suddenly a fierce storm began and the ship could not be turned head-on to the wind. We had to let ourselves be driven by the wind. The ship was badly damaged by the storm. On the second day, the cargo was dumped overboard. For several days both sun stars were invisible as the storm raged.  We lost all hope of surviving

2 Samuel 7: After David settled into his palace and the land enjoyed peace, David thought about building a temple for the Lord. Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David: " I will establish your dynasty for ever. But it will be your son, not yourself, who will build a temple for me."
David praised God: "Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have helped me so much
and promised me so much?
May my House continue in your presence for ever. May you bless my House forever."
Dear God, please bless everyone in my family tree, past, present and future

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. John 7.1-30:

Jesus stayed in Galilee; he could not stay in Judaea, because the Jews were out to kill him. As the Jewish feast of Tabernacles drew near, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, but quite privately, without drawing attention to himself. Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, ‘Isn’t this the man they want to kill? And here he is, speaking freely, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authorities have made up their minds that he is the Christ? Yet we all know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one will know where he comes from.’
Then, as Jesus taught in the Temple, he cried out: ‘Yes, you know me and you know where I came from. Yet I have not come of myself: no, there is one who sent me and I really come from him, and you do not know him, but I know him because I have come from him and it was he who sent me.’ They would have arrested him then, but because his time had not yet come no one laid a hand on him.

Reflection: Jesus knew that two weeks from today he would die on the cross. Imagine if someone told us we would die in two weeks .... in agony on a Cross

Acts 24.27 - 25.12: After two years, Felix was succeeded by Festus. Festus arranged a new trial for Paul. The religious leaders repeated their accusations. Paul repeated his innocence. Festus wanted to gain favor with the leaders so he said to Paul "Are you willing to go to Jerusalem for a trial with the full council of religious leaders, at which I would preside?" Paul knew his rights, and stood his ground, not wanting to go to a kangaroo court in Jerusalem. So he invoked his right as a Roman citizen: "I appeal to Caesar". Festus replied "You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar (Rome) you shall go"

If you really believe what Moses wrote, you would believe in me, since it was I that he was writing about"

2 Samuel 4-5: After Ishbaal, son of Saul, was murdered, David became king of Israel as well as king of Judah. David was 30 years old when he became king. He reigned over Judah for 7 years. Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

Acts 24.1-26: When the religious leaders arrived, they put their case to Felix. They summed up their accusations by saying "The plain truth is that we find this man to be a perfect pest. He stirs up trouble among Jews everywhere, and is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect". Paul replied "In regard to the Way, which they malign as a sect, I serve and worship the very same God worshipped by our ancestors. I live in hope that God will raise the dead. If that's my crime, my accusers are just as guilty as I am". Felix postponed a decision. He met with Paul many  times, hoping  Paul would offer him a bribe

John 5.17-30: Jesus said to the religious leaders "My Father goes on working, and so do I.  Whoever refuses honor to the Son, refuses honor to the Father who sent him. The Father judges no one. He has entrusted all judgement to the Son. A time will come  when the dead will leave their graves at the sound of the Son's voice. Those who did good, will rise again to life. Those who did evil, will face condemnation".
