Imitating
Pope Francis
Tues April 29
Yesterday morning I went to the Australian Consulate in Wanchai
to vote for this weekend's federal election. Australia is one of the few
countries in the world where voting is compulsory .... and as I get older
I see the wisdom in this ... it makes it more difficult for extremists to get
control of a country. Very different from the US where at the last federal
election more than 80,000,000 eligible voters did not vote ... making it easier
for D.T. to win.
Last night at the cathedral I took part in a special Mass to
commemorate Pope Francis (... and to pray that the next Pope would have a
similar love for the poor!)

1 Kings 3: The Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream and said "Ask me for anything you'd like." Solomon asked for wisdom: "Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil." God replied: "I now give you a heart full of wisdom, wisdom greater than anyone else has ever had. And I also give you what you did not ask for: riches and glory and long life." Not long after this, two prostitutes came for judgement: they lived in the same house and both had given birth to a son, but one of the babies died during the night.
The mother of the dead baby changed babies
during the same night
and claimed that the living baby was hers. Solomon asked for a sword to cut the
living baby in two
and give half to each mother. The lying woman agreed, but the real mother
said
"No. Don't kill the baby. Give it to the other woman." Solomon then knew the real mother was telling
the truth
and gave the baby to her.
For wisdom such as this, Solomon's reputation spread far.
Dear Lord, please give me more
wisdom for my life
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
109-110: O God whom I praise,
do not be silent,
for people are bombarding me with words of hate. They speak to me with
lying tongues
and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for
good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object
of scorn.
Help me, Lord my God.
Lord,
when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Romans 1.8-16: I thank God for the
way people everywhere speak of your faith. I never fail to mention
you in my prayers.
I pray for the opportunity to visit you if God wills. I long to see you to
encourage you and to be encouraged by you. For I am not ashamed of
the Good News. It is the power of God saving everyone who has
faith, Jews
first then everyone else
Jesus, help me to pray
for others the way Paul prayed for others
Listen
Luke
1.1-4: Dear
Friend of God, there are already many reports written about
Jesus.
These reports come from people who were the earliest
eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News.
After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a
report, so
that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News
Jesus, help me understand
your Good News

1 Kings
2: Before King David died, he encouraged his son
Solomon
to love the Lord with all his heart and soul. Solomon executed his main enemies and rivals,
including Adonijah who had again plotted to become king. Solomon then was secure and safe as king.
Dear God, thank you for the
life of David
who, despite his faults, loved you with all his heart
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing
your praise.
Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples,
praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens
and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today.
Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations.
With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every
day

Romans
1.1-7: From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, who has
been called to be an apostle,
and specially chosen to preach the Good News. This news is about the Son of God who,
according to the human nature he took, was a descendant of David. This news is about Jesus Christ our Lord who,
by his resurrection from the dead, proved he was the Son of God. From him I received my mission to preach the
obedience of faith to non-Jewish nations. You are one of these nations. You belong to
Jesus Christ. To you who are God's beloved friends in Rome,
may
God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give grace and peace
Jesus, Son of God, may all nations know
and love you
Listen

John
1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed.
The Word was with God the Father.
The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all
creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among
us.
We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept
the Word.
But to everyone who did accept him,
he gave power to become children of God
Jesus, please help me understand how you are
the Word-made-flesh

Acts
2.37-47: The
crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we
do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit".
That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the
teaching of the apostles, to a
life of sharing and caring, to the
Breaking of Bread, and to prayer.
Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on
everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group.
Jesus,
please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
118: Give
thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel
say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say:
"His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to
trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in
princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord
is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has
triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and
recount all his deeds. The
stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is
the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We
rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks
to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Peter 1.3-9: Blessed
be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In his great mercy, he has made us
his children. He has prepared a place in heaven for us to live with him forever.
This is a cause of great joy for you, even though life in this world has many
trials. You
did not see Jesus, yet you love him, and you believe in him. Faith gives
you confidence to look forward to the salvation of your souls.
Jesus, I have never seen you with my physical eyes, but I love you and believe

John
20.21-29: That
same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had
gathered, for fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before
them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his
side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he
breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the
12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had
seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I
refuse to believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the same
house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again
appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he
said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but
believe". Thomas replied "My
Lord and my God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see
me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe".
Jesus, my Lord and my
God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John
could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken
place: the crippled man was standing next to Peter and John. The leaders gave
Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus. Peter
and John replied "Which
is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop
proclaiming what we have seen and heard". The leaders released the two

21.1-14: Jesus also
appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other
disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught
nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not
recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the
boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on
the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they
returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The
net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread.
He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have

8: How
great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the
heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged,

Luke
24.36-49: The
disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself
stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a
ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch
me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I
have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they
were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some
grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then
he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So
you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day
rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins
would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the
Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with
this power from on high"

As
I reflect on the life of Pope Francis, I remember how his call to make 2016 a
Year of Mercy led to the establishment of MercyHK! And his example of using his
holiday time to stay in Rome rather than going to the usual summer resort led to
my using my holiday time to make trips to Africa etc to try to stop drug mules
coming to HK and to visit families of prisoners in HK. Francis a big influence

3.1-10: One
afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar
asked them for money. He was crippled from birth. Peter said to him "I
don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in
the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!" Peter then
took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and
ankles became firm and he could walk. He was so happy he started jumping around.
He went into the Temple, praising God

Luke
24.13-35: That same
day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of
Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened,
Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him.
When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus
of Nazareth, and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in
our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive".
Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and
resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he
blessed some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he
immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did
not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the
road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to
Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord
has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road,
and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible
