Imitating Pope Francis

My other sites/links

Tues May 13

Yesterday morning I went with MercyHK case workers Agnes, Candy and Raymond for the crematory funeral service of a 42 year old drug addict who used to attend our gatherings. No family or friends present ...just the four of us

Pope Leo explains the choice of "Leo" *** When he was international leader of the Augustinian Congregation, he visited many places where the Augustinians worked - including Africa and the Philippines - and Australia, where he four times (!) went to Villanova College in Brisbane, where I was a student in Primary 4 and 5 travelling by train and foot each day, before the Oblates opened Iona College near my home (bicycle..) in 1958 ...where I was a foundation student in 1958.

A picture that shocked the world

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 22: Some false prophets encouraged the king of Israel and the king of Judah to go to war. Micah, a true prophet of the Lord, warned the kings not to go to war. The men of Israel and Judah were defeated in the war. Ahab, the king of Israel, died in the war.
Dear Lord, please don't let false prophets deceive the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people

Romans 8.9-13: You are on God's team. God the Father is the manager. Jesus is the captain. The Holy Spirit is the coach, a coach living in your heart. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead, is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will help you live a risen life. By the grace of the Holy Spirit you can stop doing bad things
Holy Spirit of Jesus, Holy Spirit of the Father, fall afresh on me!

Listen

Luke 2.21-32: When the baby was circumcised on the 8th day, he was given the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him 9 months before. When Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died,  he would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple, took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying:
"Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel"
Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you Lord

1 Kings 20, 21: King Ahab wanted the vineyard of Naboth, but Naboth refused to sell his ancestral inheritance. Ahab's wife Jezebel then had Naboth murdered and Ahab took the vineyard. The prophet Elijah  confronted Ahab for his crime. Ahab then repented of his crime.
Dear God, please help us respect other people's property

My recording of this reading

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

Romans 7.14-25: Even though I'm on God's team, I don't always play as well as I should. At times I cannot understand my behavior. I fail to do good things, and I find myself doing bad things. It's as if there is a battle going on inside me. In my heart I dearly love God, but my will is weak, and I do things that I know are wrong. Who can help me keep going? Who can fix up things in my life? Jesus can. He is the one who sorts out things in my life, and changes chaos into order, by the working of the Holy Spirit
Jesus, my life is in your hands. Please arrange my life the way you want to

Luke 2.15-20: After the angels went away, the shepherds said to one another "Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about". So they quickly went and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. People who heard the shepherds talk about the angels were amazed. As for Mary, she treasured every moment of what had happened and pondered the whole event in her heart. The shepherds went back to their fields glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.
Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Jesus we adore you, Christ the Lord

c.f. readings for Easter 4

Acts 13.13-52: Paul and Barnabas went to another Antioch, Antioch in Pisidia. Out of jealousy, the local Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to the Jewish community. Paul and Barnabas then turned their attention to non-Jewish people, and so the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside. But the Jewish leaders kept up their campaign, and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from Pisidia.
Jesus, please don't let Gospel workers be expelled

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to serve you with gladness

Revelation 7.9-17: I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, and language. They were standing in front of the throne, with palms in their hands. They shouted: "Victory to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One of the elders told me who these people are: "These are the people who have been through the great persecution. They now serve God day and night in his sanctuary. The Lamb is their Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water. God has wiped away all tears from their eyes".
Jesus, please help sorrowing people who are crying today

John 10.11-14: Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. A hired man, since he has no real concern for the sheep, abandons them and runs away if he sees a wolf coming. I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep, and my own sheep know me"
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help me to be a good sheep, and a good shepherd

1 Kings 19:
Elijah once spent a night in a cave. The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave
. Then there was a mighty wind that shattered trees and rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze. And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us be aware of your presence in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalms 120, 121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever.
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Romans 6.12-23: Do not let sin control your life. Always remember which team you play for: God's Grace Guys, not Satan's Sin Side. Playing for SSS is a recipe for death. Playing for GGG leads to eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
Jesus, please help me remember I'm on your team

Luke 2.9-14: Not far from where Mary had her baby, there were shepherds who lived in the fields and took it in turns to watch their sheep during the night. An angel appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them. The angel said "Do not be afraid.  I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by everyone. Today in the town of David, a savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. Look for a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger". Suddenly with the angel there were many other angels, praising God and singing "Glory to God in heaven, and peace to people on earth"
"O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord"

Reflection: The God who was not in an earthquake or fire but in a gentle breeze showed the same characteristic in the Gospel ... not in a palace or rich home but in a manger

1 Kings 18: In the 3rd year of drought, the Lord sent Elijah to speak to Ahab. Elijah got Ahab to gather all the people and all the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to produce fire to consume a sacrificed bull. Elijah mocked the false prophets as they ranted and raved and cut themselves, but produced no fire for their bull. Then Elijah got the people to pour water on his bull and he prayed to God to hear his prayer. A fire from heaven then consumed the bull and the people acknowledged the Lord as God. Elijah then told Ahab there would soon be rain, and the sky grew dark and produced torrents of rain.
Dear God, please help people not to follow false gods

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Romans 6.3-11: When we were baptized, two things happened:
1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died.
2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life

This dying and rising means we have died to sin, and risen to a new life. We died to an old life, and  we came back to a new life. We have been re-born, born again
Jesus, please help me leave my old life behind. Help me live a new life with you

Luke 2.1-8: The Emperor of Rome ordered that a census be taken of the whole Empire. Every man  had to go to his home town to be registered. So Joseph set out from Nazareth in Galilee and traveled to Judea, to the town of David called Bethlehem, with his pregnant wife Mary. While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have her child. She gave birth to a son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a feeding box for animals, because there was no room for them at the local inn

1 Kings 17:  When Ahab was king of Israel, in the 9th century B.C., Elijah was a prophet of the Lord. Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain for a long time because the people were following the cult of Baal. Elijah did miracles in the name of the Lord: he blessed a poor widow's food to make it increase, and he brought back to life a young boy who had died.
Dear God, please bless our prayers as you blessed the prayers of Elijah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord.
We rejoice and are glad.

Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Romans 5.12-21: Through one man, Adam, the virus of sin entered the world, and sin infected everyone with death. The divine anti-virus of grace is more powerful than any sin virus

Matthew 1.18-25:
This is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. But before they lived together, Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife. Her baby has been conceived by the  power of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son. You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will save his people from their sins." Joseph  took Mary to his home as his wife. She gave birth to a son, Jesus.

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 12-16: After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king. The people asked Rehoboam not to be harsh like Solomon. Solomon had imposed heavy taxes, enforced labor etc. Rehoboam asked the elders for advice. They said "Treat the people kindly and they will serve you." Rehoboam asked his peers for advice. They said "Treat the people more harshly than your father." Rehoboam accepted the advice of his peers. Therefore the people of Israel rejected him as king. Only the people of Judah accepted him. The people of Israel made Jeroboam king. He had previously led an unsuccessful revolt against Solomon. Rehoboam and Jeroboam died and were succeeded by various kings who ruled over Judah and Israel.
Dear God, please help leaders be kind to their people

Romans 5.1-5:  By faith and through Jesus we can live in the friendship of God. We look forward to heaven and an end to all suffering. In the meantime our suffering teaches us patience. When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry
