Ezra 1: After the Jewish
people had been in Babylon about 70 years,
the Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia
to free the Jews. The king also told the
Jews to re-build their temple in Jerusalem.
Dear
Lord, please give freedom to all the peoples of the world
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried,
remembering Zion.
On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our
captors, for songs.
"Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on
alien soil?
If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth
if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys.
Lord, please help people
who have been exiled from their homeland

Romans 13.1-7: Be a good

Authority comes from God and is answerable to God. Don't break laws. Live honestly.

16.7-33:
Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I will leave you soon. After I go, I will send
the New Friend to you. The New Friend will teach you all about right and wrong.
The New Friend will help you know the truth about everything.
You are sad now because I am leaving you. But I will see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy. No one will be able to take that joy from you
Jesus, thank you for your peace, your joy, and your Holy Spirit

2 Kings
21-25: Josiah
king of Judah was a good leader who loved the Lord
and promoted religious reform. But
most other kings of Judah and Israel at this time were not good. The
country was invaded by the king of Babylon
who deported most of the population to Babylon.
Only the poorest people in the countryside were left behind.
Dear
God, please give the world good leaders
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
136: O
give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
for his great love is without end. It
was his wisdom which made the skies,
for his great love is without end. It
was he who made the sun, moon and stars,
for his great love is without end. It
was he who rescued and protected his people Israel,
for his great love is without end. He
gives food to all living things,
for his great love is without end. To
the God of heaven give thanks,
for his great love is without end.
We
praise you, Lord, for your great love is without end

12.14-21: Pray
for people who are unkind to you. Be kind to them.
Rejoice with those who are happy. Console people who are sad. Treat
everyone with kindness. Never be condescending.
Make real friends with the poor. Do
all you can to live at peace with everyone. Resist evil and conquer it with good
Jesus,
I pray for (.. name ...) who was unkind to me

John
15.18 - 16.1: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples
"If you belonged to the world, the world would be friendly to you.
But because my choice withdrew you from the world, therefore the world is
unfriendly to you. Just as I am hated and persecuted, so you also
will be hated and persecuted. As the Scripture says 'They hated me
for no reason'. I am telling you these things now, so that when they
happen, your
faith will not be shaken
Jesus, if people are
unfriendly because I am a Christian, please give me strength and courage

c.f. readings for Easter 6
Acts
15.1-29: Some Jewish
Christians came to Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians
should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and
decided to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there. During
a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been poured out
on non-circumcised people. James
spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James
then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers: "All we ask you to do is
to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood from the meat of
strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what
is right"
Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable demands on other people
My recording of this reading

Psalms
66-68: O God, be
gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let
all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O
sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his
presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter
for the homeless. God gives his people strength.
May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God
Recording

Revelation
21.10-23: I saw the
Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's
glory, and glittered like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city,
since the
Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need
sun or moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of
the Lamb.
Jesus, Light of the world, Light of Heaven, we adore you, Lord!

John
14.23-27: At the
meal, Jesus said to his disciples "If you love me, you will put my words
into practice, and my Father will love you, and we shall make our home in your
heart. The
New Friend, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach
you everything and remind you of all I have said to you. Peace
I leave with you, my own peace I give you, a peace the world cannot give"
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, please help me understand how you live in my
heart. Thank you for your peace

Genesis
3: A
creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and
first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they
disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God
said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday
a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and
woman: "From dust you came and to dust you will return." The first
man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve
(meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil
in the world started
when Adam and Eve disobeyed you

Psalm
103: My soul, give thanks to the
Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and
never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals
every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing
your youth like an eagle's life. The
Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the
heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As
far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father
has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him.
Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give
thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Ephesians
3.14-21: This is what I
pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or
natural, takes it name: May he give you power through his Spirit for your
hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith.
Planted in love and built on love, may
you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled
with that love
Glory be to him whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can
ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and
in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen
Listen

John
19.25-30: Near the
cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary Magdalene. Seeing his mother and John the apostle standing near her, Jesus
said to his mother "He is your son". Then to John he said "She is
your mother". From that moment, John regarded Mary as his own
mother. Jesus said "My work is finished". Then he bowed his head and
died
We adore you Lord Jesus and we praise you, because you have
redeemed the world

King Hezekiah became ill and was dying.
Hezekiah begged the Lord to cure him. The Lord told Isaiah the prophet to tell

135: Praise the name of the Lord,

Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he

4.31-37: Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee.
On the Sabbath day he taught in the local prayer hall. In the hall there was a man possessed by a
devil which shouted "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of
God". Jesus said sharply "Be quiet! Come out of
him".
And the devil left the man without hurting him. People in the hall said "He gives orders

Isaiah said to the king:
"The Lord says 'Do not be afraid of the King of Assyria.
He shall not enter Jerusalem.

4.14-22: Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him,
returned to Galilee.
He taught in local prayer halls. His reputation spread. He came to his home town of Nazareth and went
to the prayer hall
on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up and read these words from the
prophet Isaiah:
"The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me
to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners,
to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free". Jesus then sat down and said to the people in
the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today
even as you listen"
Jesus, please help me be more open to the
power of your Spirit.

On
this day in 1861, in Marseilles, a French bishop died at the age of 78. He had
been born into an aristocratic family which was forced to flee from the French
Revolution. His family went to Italy as refugees. His parents had an unhappy
marriage and eventually divorced. In Italy the young Eugene de Mazenod had an
overpowering experience of the love of Jesus on the Cross. Eugene became a
priest and dedicated himself to serving the poorest parts of French society such
as prisoners and domestic servants. To further his work he joined with other
priests to form a new congregation in the Church. The group came to be known as the Oblates
of Mary Immaculate.
Today the Oblates have around 3,000 members working for the poor in more than 60
countries around the world. Saint

Matthew
4.1-11: After he was baptized,
Jesus spent about 40 days praying and fasting in the
desert.
During this time, he was tempted by Satan. "If you are the Son of God,
change some stones into bread" said Satan. Jesus replied "Human life needs more than
bread.
Life needs God's message". Satan then took Jesus to a high place
and said
"Throw yourself down, since the angels will protect you". Jesus replied
"Presumption is a sin". Then Satan took Jesus to a high mountain
and showed him all the nations of the world. "Worship me and I will give you all these
nations" said Satan. Jesus replied
"Go away, Satan! Only God is to be worshipped". The devil then went away.
