Tues June 3
Yesterday at the High Court a very kind judge gave bail to two
applicants supported by Lucia and myself and our bail group. God bless the kind
judge! Today I'm due to be in a prison the whole day
To
prepare for Pentecost (June 8), let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this
week:The seal is
a symbol close to that of anointing. "The Father has set his seal"
on Christ and also seals us
in him. Because this seal indicates
the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, the image of the seal (sphragis)
has been used in some theological traditions to express the indelible
"character" imprinted by these three unrepeatable sacraments. CCC
698

In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day: Come
Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!
Today
is the feast of the
Ugandan martyrs. I had the privilege of visiting Namugongo in

Today
is the death anniversary of Hudson
Taylor who was known for his respect for Chinese culture. He adopted
the wearing of local Chinese clothing at a time when this was extremely rare

Ezra
8-10: Before the Jews left Babylon,
Ezra had organized them to pray and fast for a safe journey. When the Jews reached Jerusalem,
Ezra dissolved any marriages that had been arranged with foreign
women while the Jews were in Babylon.
Dear God, please help us to
remember to pray for safety each time we set out on a journey
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
145: I will give you glory, O God my king.
I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works,
shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion,
slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,
and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words
and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall
and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you
and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy
name,
for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love.
Thank you for your love

Romans 15.15-33: The reason I have written to you is to

Spain.

John
17.1-21:
After saying many things to his disciples at the meal, Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed "Father, my time has come. Give eternal life to everyone you have entrusted to
me.
Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have
sent.
I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world existed.
Protect those you have given me. Protect them from Satan. Consecrate them in the
truth.
As you sent me into the world, so I am sending them into the world. May all my followers be united, so that the world will believe it was you who sent me"
Jesus, please protect our world from lies and
deception. Please bless people who witness to the truth in difficult
situations

Mon June 2
This
morning Lucia and I are due to be at the High Court for two bail applications - Come
Holy Spirit! And speaking of prisoners .... on last Saturday's public
holiday, three kind Filipinas visited 15 prisoners at Lai Chi Kok & Stanley
... and yesterday they visited 13 at Shek Pik and Tong Fuk. The three angels are
domestic helpers who have only Sunday as a weekly holiday ... and use Sundays
& public holidays to visit prisoners. God bless them!
To
prepare for Pentecost (June 8), let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this
week:
Cloud and
light. These two images occur together
in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. In the theophanies of the Old
Testament, the cloud,
now obscure, now luminous, reveals the living and saving God, while veiling the
transcendence of his glory - with Moses on Mount Sinai, at the tent of meeting,
and during the wandering in the desert, and with Solomon at the dedication of
the Temple. In the Holy Spirit, Christ fulfills these figures. The Spirit comes
upon the Virgin Mary and "overshadows"
her, so that she might conceive and give birth to Jesus. On the mountain of
Transfiguration, the Spirit in the "cloud came
and overshadowed" Jesus, Moses and Elijah, Peter, James and John, and
"a voice came out of the
cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!' Finally, the
cloud took Jesus out of the sight of the disciples. (CCC
697)
In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day: Come
Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Ezra 7: Ezra was a scholar who loved to study the Law
of the Lord.
He was a descendant of Aaron. The Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia
to grant any request that Ezra made to help the Jews. Ezra prayed: "Blessed be the Lord our
God, for moving the
king's heart to look favorably on the rebuilding of our temple."
Dear God, please move the

who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress.
He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the Lord.
Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings
grown tall and strong from their youth;
our daughters graceful as columns,
adorned as though for a palace.
Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.

example of people who did not give up,

bounds to hope

idea for me was something we all can do: support one of the strongest media voices of
concern for Gaza - The

UK and Europe to care about Gaza

c.f. Feast of the Ascension
Acts 1.6-11: On
the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will
receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses
in every part of the world". As he said this, he
was lifted up while they watched. A cloud took him from their sight. Then
two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you,
will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave".
Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I
think and speak and live
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
47-48: All
peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord,
our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially
in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount
Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts
meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love
you as Creator of the Universe
Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you
Recording

Ephesians
1.16-18: I never fail to
remember you in my prayers and to thank God for you. May the God of our Lord
Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you more and more wisdom and knowledge
to see ever more clearly his great love for you. May he enlighten your mind to
hope for the
glorious life he has prepared for us in heaven.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may I see you more clearly, love you more
dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day
Recording

Luke
24.50-53: Jesus then took his
disciples out of Jerusalem to the village of Bethany. Lifting up his hands, he
blessed them. As he blessed them, he was
carried up to heaven. They worshipped him, then went back to Jerusalem
full of joy. They were continually in the Temple praising God.
Jesus, thank you for the Gospel of Luke. Please increase my faith in you as
the One who came down from heaven, and went back to heaven

c.f. readings for Feast of Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth

Zephaniah 3.14-18: Shout
for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your
heart, daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has
driven your enemies away. The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you
have no more evil to fear. When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem:
Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp. The
Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult
with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of
joy for you as on a day of festival.

Romans
12.9-13: Do not let
your love be superficial, but sincerely prefer good to evil. Have a family love
for each other, and a profound respect for each other. Persevere in your love
for the Lord and your service of the Lord. Hope will make you cheerful. Do not
give up when trials come. Keep on praying. Help people who are in need. Make
hospitality your special care.
Jesus, please help me grow in love. Help me love you and other people a bit

Luke
1.39-45: As soon as
she could and as quickly as she could, Mary went to Elizabeth's home in the
hills near Jerusalem. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in
Elizabeth's womb jumped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth
said to Mary "Of all women, you are the most blessed, and
blessed is the baby in your womb. Why should I be honored with a visit
from the mother of my Lord? Blessed are you for believing God's
promise"
Mary, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb,
