c.f. readings for Feast of Mary Magdalene

Song of Songs 3.1-4: The bride says: On my bed, at night, I sought him whom my heart loves. I sought but did not find him. So I will rise and go through the City; in the streets and in the squares, I will seek him whom my heart loves. I sought, but did not find him. The watchmen came upon me on their rounds in the City: "Have you seen him whom my heart loves?" Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my heart loves.
Jesus, please increase my love for you, my longing for you.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 63: O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you, like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night.
Lord, our hearts are restless, until they rest in you

Recording

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
Recording

John 20.11-18: Peter and John went home. Mary (Magdalene) remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?". Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary" and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at funerals  today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and strength for the days ahead

Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

Apostles' "right brain" said "no use staying at empty tomb. Can't do anything. Useless to stay". Mary Magdalene's feminine intuition said "Stay. Not sure why. But it's best to stay".

1 Maccabees 2: Mattathias was a Jew loyal to his religion at a time when most people were not loyal. When the king's representative came to the town of Mattathias and started forcing people to take part in pagan ceremonies, Mattathias killed the representative. Mattathias then called on everyone loyal to God to join him in the desert. Mattathias soon had a small army which gradually won control of many parts of the country and restored observance of God's law. When Mattathias was coming to the end of his life he appointed his son Judas as his army successor.
Dear God, help us to be loyal to you like Mattathias

My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48:
All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe
Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Listen

Galatians 5.19-26: When self-indulgence is at work, the results are obvious: sexual irresponsibility, sorcery, feuds and wrangling, jealousy and drunkenness. What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, truthfulness, gentleness and self-control. You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent desires. Let us be directed by the Spirit. We must stop being conceited, provocative and envious
Holy Spirit,  increase your influence in my life

Listen

Matthew 13.24-43: Jesus told the people another story: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. An enemy came and sowed weeds in the same field. When the good seed sprouted, so did the weeds. The man's servants asked if they should get rid of the weeds. "No", said the man, "you might damage the good seed if you do that. Let them both grow till harvest time. Then burn the weeds." Then Jesus explained his story: "I am the sower. The field is the world. The good seed stands for people of good will. The weeds stand for people of bad will. The enemy is Satan. At the end of the world, the Son of Man will send his angels to sort out the good and the bad people.
Bad people will go to hell.  Good people will go to heaven".

Jesus, please protect good people from bad people

Listen

Reflection: Pope Francis: An evangelizing community is always concerned with fruit, because the Lord wants her to be fruitful. It cares for the grain and does not grow impatient at the weeds. The sower, when he sees weeds sprouting among the grain does not grumble or overreact. He or she finds a way to let the word take flesh in a particular situation and bear fruits of new life, however imperfect or incomplete these may appear.  (No 24 here)

c.f. readings for Sunday 16

Genesis 18: One day at Mamre, God and two angels appeared to Abraham. At first, God and the angels looked like men. Following the ancient custom of hospitality Abraham prepared a feast for them. God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to be destroyed because of the evil done there. Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom. God agreed to postpone Sodom's destruction for a while.
Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should. Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others
Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

Colossians 1.24 - 2.2: As I sit in my prison, I am at peace in my suffering, offering up my suffering to Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. God chose me to reveal to you his sacred message: Christ, your hope of glory,  is among you. My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives.
"Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, With cords that cannot be broken, Bind us together, Lord, Bind us together, Bind us together in Love"

Luke 10.38-42: Jesus one day visited the home of Martha and her sister Mary. Mary sat and listened to Jesus. Martha complained that Mary was not helping her with the serving. Jesus said "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things. Mary has chosen the one thing that matters".

1 Maccabees 1: Some Jews abandoned their religion and made a pact with King Antiochus Epiphanes, a Seleucid king of the Greeks. Antiochus conquered many lands, including Israel. He plundered the Temple and forced the Jews to renounce their religion. But many Jews courageously stood firm and were punished with death. This was a sad and terrible time for Israel.
Dear God, please help us stay faithful to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 46: God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Listen

Galatians 5.13-15: Serve one another in works of love, since the whole of the Law is summed up in the command "Love your neighbor as yourself". If you go in for non-stop criticism and personal attacks, you will destroy the church community
Jesus, help me avoid unfair/unnecessary criticism of other people

Matthew 13One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field.
Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other listen to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest.

Jesus, please help me be good soil!

Listen

Reflection: The problem wasn't the seeds ... but the soil/ground!

Esther 6-8: On the night between the two banquets, the king could not sleep. To induce sleep he started reading the history of his kingdom. He read how some years ago two of his eunuchs planned to assassinate him, but the plot was foiled by Mordecai. The king asked Haman how to honor a man whom the king wished to honor. Haman thought the king was talking about himself, Haman, so
he suggested royal clothes, a royal horse and a royal parade. The king agreed and told Haman to honor Mordecai in this way. This was a great humiliation for Haman. And it got even worse for Haman. At the second banquet, Esther told the king that she was Jewish and that Haman planned to kill all Jews. The result: Haman was hanged on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the Jews were not only spared annihilation - they were given places of honor in the kingdom. The Jews praised God for all his help through Mordecai.

Dear God, please stop people like Haman from committing injustice

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Galatians 5.1-6: When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free. Stand firm then and do not return to a life of slavery to Jewish Law. As a Christian, it doesn't matter if you are circumcised or not.
What matters is faith that is put into loving action

Jesus, help people whose lives are being damaged by unreasonable religious laws

Luke 8.1-3: Jesus went to many towns and villages, proclaiming the Good News. The 12 apostles went with him, as did a group of women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna and several others. These women used their own money to support Jesus and the apostles
Jesus, thank you for all the women who support the spread of the Good News in today's world

Esther 5: After Esther prayed to God for a long time, she went to the palace and presented herself to the king. At first the king was angry that Esther came without being invited, but then his heart softened and he welcomed her. When King Ahasuerus saw that Esther was distressed, he asked her what was wrong. He promised to do anything for her. Esther asked that there be two special banquets for herself, the king and Haman.  The king agreed and the banquets were arranged. Haman meanwhile was making his own arrangements: a high gallows on which to hang Mordecai.
Dear God, please move the hearts of rulers to be kind to their people

Psalm 41: Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble. The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.

Galatians 4.4-6: When the appointed time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law, and to enable us to be adopted as children of God, brothers and sisters of his Son. The proof that we are children is that God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts: the Spirit that cries "Abba, Father"
Jesus, help me understand how I have been adopted, how you are my Brother

Luke 6.41-45:
In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you notice the splinter in someone else's eye, but don't notice the plank in your own eye?  Deal with your own faults before you start correcting other people. A good tree does not produce bad fruit. A bad tree does not produce good fruit. The fruit tells you what sort of tree it came from. So with people: their words and actions tell you what their heart is like - good or bad
Jesus, please help me be a good person, producing good fruit

Yesterday I spent the whole day in the office, trying to catch up on prison office jobs ... like writing support letters for people applying for early release under "Plan A":
Plan A refers to the Pre-Release Employment Scheme. This scheme  allows eligible prisoners serving sentences of two years or more to apply for early release, up to six months before their earliest discharge date, if they have secured employment . The primary goal is to facilitate their reintegration into society by providing a structured transition period involving supervision and hostel accommodation.

Esther 4: When Mordecai heard about Haman's plan, Mordecai asked Esther to appeal to Ahasuerus for help. Mordecai and Esther both knew that to approach the king without an invitation was a crime punishable by death, unless the king saw fit to welcome an uninvited person. So they prayed to God to move the heart of Ahasuerus to welcome Esther
Dear God, please move the hearts of rulers to care for their people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Galatians 3.26-28: Through faith in Christ Jesus, you are children of God. When you were baptized, you entered into a special relationship of friendship with Christ. John 4.1-14: Jesus visited a Samaritan town. Near a well there, Jesus said to a Samaritan woman "Give me a drink". He also said to her  "If you drink water from this well, you will get thirsty again. Jesus, please give me a drink of your eternal life water - which is your Holy Spirit
