Imitating
Pope Francis
Tues July 29
Yesterday morning at Chai Wan Cemetery chapel I joined several members of the MercyHK family and the Saturday afternoon prayer group for the funeral of our dear friend Teddy Tang. May his prayers in Heaven help us imitate his faith and courage.
Today I'm due to spend all day visiting a prison.

Feast of Sts Martha, Mary & Lazarus
Luke
10.38-42: Jesus
came to a village, and a
woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a
sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him
speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, "Lord,
do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself?
Please tell her to help me." But the Lord answered: "Martha,
Martha," he said "you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few
are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is
not to be taken from her."
Recording
John
11.1-44: Lazarus
and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village of
Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus
"Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time Jesus and his
disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha
said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died".
Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in
me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha
"Where have you put him?" Jesus cried as he went to the tomb.
The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the
stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come
out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said
"Unwrap him and let him go free".
Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Please give eternal life to my
friend (....name...) who died recently
Recording

John
12.1-8: Six days
before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, for a dinner at the home of Lazarus,
Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she
wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to
betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to
the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he
was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it. Jesus
replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial.
Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone"
Jesus, please help people in charge of money not to steal
Listen

John 12.9-11: When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[ was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

When I was walking back to Temple Street after 8.30 Mass
at YMT last Sunday, as I passed the open area of the Henry Leong Centre, I saw
people playing a game I'd never seen before ....on a small court area like a
tiny tennis court ...with net ...and a tennis ball ...using wooden bats - like
oversized table tennis bats. Name of game? I don't know. Someone please tell

Yesterday
morning at my 8.30 Cantonese Mass at St. Paul's Parish, Yau Ma Tei, I was joined
by 16 dear friends from MercyHK's Shanghai Street Centre ...including our
volunteer Shirley Lee who gave a beautiful sharing after the Gospel. After Mass
the 17 of us went to nearby McDonald's for a very special breakfast! Some photos
and a moving reflection by Shirley here at
her FB site (can translate to English).
When I was going back to Temple Street after McDonald's I happened to be walking near a group of 5 people from Shenzhen ...four men and one woman ... one of whom initiated a conversation with me ... was not I who started the chat ....so I showed them MercyHK's canteen in Temple Street and the next door Dr Jesus Centre .... and they were most interested in our work for prisoners and other needy people. It was their first ever visit to HK ... a one day visit. I welcomed them to come again!

Maccabees 7: Some Jews who were disloyal to Judas joined
with supporters of the new king, Demetrius, to plot the overthrow of
Judas. Nicanor, one of the king's generals, was sent
to defeat Judas
and exterminate the Jews. But when the battle took place, Nicanor
himself died and his army was routed. Once again the land experienced peace
for a
while.
Dear God, please protect us

Psalms
52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you
are.
You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from
trouble.
You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares
that I can't get to sleep.
Sometimes I wish I was a bird
and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you,
in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready.
I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength,
and each morning acclaim your love.
O God, please help me to praise
and love you every day

1.1-7: From Paul, appointed to be an apostle of
Christ Jesus. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ. Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ.

through whose blood we gain our freedom
and the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for upgrading me from human child to Divine Child!
Listen

Luke
8.40-56: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and
urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was
dying.
As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched
his clothing. Her bleeding stopped at that moment.
Jesus knew what had happened and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed
you. Go in peace"

Before Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived
and said to the official "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the
Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the
official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James,
John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying.
She is not dead, but asleep". They laughed at him, since they
knew she was dead.
Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get
up". Her spirit returned and she got up at once
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to
heal sick people and raise the dead

Genesis
18: One
day at Mamre, God and two angels appeared to Abraham. At first, God and the
angels looked like men. Following the ancient custom of hospitality Abraham
prepared a feast for them. God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to
be destroyed because of the evil done there. Abraham
pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom. God agreed to postpone Sodom's
destruction for a while.
Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

Psalm
138: I thank you, Lord, with all
my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless
you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and
love which are far above what we can understand. On
the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All
earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall
sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though
I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not
abandon us whom you have made.
Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of
the year is a Thanksgiving Day
Listen

Colossians
2.9-18: In
Christ's body lives the fullness of divinity. In him, you too find fulfillment.
In baptism, you were buried with him and then raised to new life. Our
real life is life with and in Christ. Be careful of people who are always
going on about some vision they have had, giving such visions more importance
than Christ himself
Jesus, may my focus always be on you

Luke
11.9-13: Jesus
said to his disciples "Ask,
and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and
the door will open. If children ask their parents for something good, their
parents will always give it to them. Even more so will the heavenly Father give
the Holy Spirit to those who ask him"
Heavenly Father, please give me your Holy Spirit!

be your way of exercising authority. You
must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I
came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the

The army of Antiochus was led by Gorgias and

He often said that it is easy for a great number of soldiers to be defeated

49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable,

people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom.
