Imitating Pope Francis

Tues July 29

Yesterday morning at Chai Wan Cemetery chapel I joined several members of the MercyHK family and the Saturday afternoon prayer group for the funeral of our dear friend Teddy Tang. May his prayers in Heaven help us imitate his faith and courage.

Today I'm due to spend all day visiting a prison.

Feast of Sts Martha, Mary & Lazarus

Luke 10.38-42: Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me." But the Lord answered: "Martha, Martha," he said "you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her."
 Recording

John 11.1-44Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus "Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time Jesus and his disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died". Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha "Where have you put him?"  Jesus cried as he went to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said "Unwrap him and let him go free".
Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Please give eternal life to my friend (....name...) who died recently
 Recording

John 12.1-8: Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethany, for a dinner at  the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it. Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial. Besides, the poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone"
Jesus, please help people in charge of money not to steal
Listen

John 12.9-11: When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[ was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,  because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

When I was walking back to Temple Street after 8.30 Mass at YMT last Sunday, as I passed the open area of the Henry Leong Centre, I saw people playing a game I'd never seen before ....on a small court area like a tiny tennis court ...with net ...and a tennis ball ...using wooden bats - like oversized table tennis bats. Name of game? I don't know. Someone please tell me!

Mon July 28

Yesterday morning at my 8.30 Cantonese Mass at St. Paul's Parish, Yau Ma Tei, I was joined by 16 dear friends from MercyHK's Shanghai Street Centre ...including our volunteer Shirley Lee who gave a beautiful sharing after the Gospel. After Mass the 17 of us went to nearby McDonald's for a very special breakfast! Some photos and a moving reflection by Shirley here at her FB site (can translate to English).

When I was going back to Temple Street after McDonald's I happened to be walking near a group of 5 people from Shenzhen ...four men and one woman ... one of whom initiated a conversation with me ... was not I who started the chat ....so I showed them MercyHK's canteen in Temple Street and the next door Dr Jesus Centre .... and they were most interested in our work for prisoners and other needy people. It was their first ever visit to HK ... a one day visit. I welcomed them to come again!

1 Maccabees 7: Some Jews who were disloyal to Judas joined with supporters of the new king, Demetrius, to plot the overthrow of Judas. Nicanor, one of the king's generals, was sent to defeat Judas and exterminate the Jews. But when the battle took place, Nicanor himself died and his army was routed. Once again the land experienced peace for a while.
Dear God, please protect us from people who are disloyal

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird  and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength,
and each morning acclaim your love.

O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Listen

Ephesians 1.1-7: From Paul, appointed to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us in Christ, to live through love in his presence. He chose us, in Christ, to be his adopted children, to make us praise the glory of his grace. This grace is his free gift to us in his Beloved Son, through whose blood we gain our freedom and the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for upgrading me from human child to Divine Child!

Listen

Luke 8.40-56: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was dying. As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.  Her bleeding stopped at that moment. Jesus knew what  had happened  and said to her "My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace"

Before  Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived and said to the official "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James, John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying. She is not dead, but asleep".  They laughed at him, since they knew she was dead. Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get up".  Her spirit returned and she got up at once
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal sick people
and raise the dead

c.f. readings for Sunday 17

Genesis 18: One day at Mamre, God and two angels appeared to Abraham. At first, God and the angels looked like men. Following the ancient custom of hospitality Abraham prepared a feast for them. God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to be destroyed because of the evil done there. Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom. God agreed to postpone Sodom's destruction for a while.
Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.
Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day

 Listen

Colossians 2.9-18: In Christ's body lives the fullness of divinity. In him, you too find fulfillment. In baptism, you were buried with him and then raised to new life. Our real life is life with and in Christ. Be careful of people who are always going on about some vision they have had, giving such visions more importance than Christ himself
Jesus, may my focus always be on you

 Listen

Luke 11.9-13: Jesus said to his disciples "Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open. If children ask their parents for something good, their parents will always give it to them. Even more so will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him"
Heavenly Father, please give me your Holy Spirit!

c.f. readings for Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus

Sirach 44-50: It is good to remember the famous people in history who had a special love for God. Remembering their faith and their love for God will give us courage for our daily lives. They were human and made mistakes, yet they persevered in serving the Lord. People like Abraham, Moses, David. Let us try to imitate their faith and courage.
Lord, please give me courage to live each day as I should

My recording of this reading

Psalm 132:

The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
The Lord swore an oath to David;
he will not go back on this word:
A son, the fruit of your body,
will I set upon your throne.
The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
For the Lord has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his dwelling:
This is my resting-place for ever;
here have I chosen to live.
The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
There Davids stock will flower;
I will prepare a lamp for my anointed.
I will cover his enemies with shame
but on him my crown shall shine.
The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

Matthew 13.16-17:

Jesus said to his disciples: Happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.

c.f. readings for Feast of St James

2 Corinthians 4.8-51: We are in difficulties on all sides, but never cornered. We see no answer to our problems, but never despair. Even though our bodies are aging and decaying, our hearts are renewed day by day. Our troubles seem great now, but they don't stand comparison with the eternal glory coming soon. When the temporary tent that we live in here on earth is folded up, we will move to an everlasting house built by God for us in heaven
Jesus, help me remember Heaven - especially when life gets tough

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Acts 12.1-2 (For Feast of St James): About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover

Matthew 20.20-28: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all "In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world".
Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

1 Maccabees 4: The army of Antiochus was led by Gorgias and had 40,000 men. Judas and his men numbered only 3,000. Judas implored God for help and then fought bravely. The army of Gorgias was routed. The next year another force, numbering 60,000 men, was sent against Judas who had 10,000 men. Once again by prayer and courage, Judas was victorious. Judas gave thanks to God, and then went to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem Judas re-dedicated the Temple and re-built the city walls
Dear God, please give me the courage of Judas

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Galatians 6.14-18: As for me, the only thing I boast about is the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not. What matters is that we become a new creature. From now on, I want no more trouble from you. The scars on my body were suffered for the sake of Jesus. May his grace be with you

Luke 8.22-25:

1 Maccabees 3: Judas led the people in many successful battles. He often said that it is easy for a great number of soldiers to be defeated by a few. "Victory in war does not depend on the size of an army. It is from heaven that strength comes". As Judas' fame spread, King Antiochus ordered a huge army to attack Judas.
Dear God, please help us put our trust in you rather than in anyone or anything else

My recording of this reading

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forget God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Listen

Galatians 6.7-9: God cannot be cheated. Where we sow is where we will reap. If we sow in the field of self-indulgence, we will get a harvest of corruption. If we sow in the field of the Spirit, we will get a harvest of eternal life. Never tire of doing good
Jesus, help me sow in the field of the Spirit by doing good

Luke 8.19-21: Jesus' mother and his brothers came looking for him. They could not get to him because of the crowd. Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers want to see you". Jesus replied "My mother and brothers are people who hear the word of God and put it into practice"
Jesus, please help me put your word into practice in my daily life, like Mary your mother
