Tues Aug 5
Two lots of good news
yesterday: MercyHK paid the HK$1,000 needed for someone to be released on
bail from prison, and the person came out yesterday afternoon. The person had
been unable to pay the bail money. And ....one
of our 8 current bail cases was informed that their case will be dropped and
they will soon be free. On the same front, today I'm due to go to a magistrates
court for the bail application of another prisoner.

Maccabees 13-14: After Jonathan's capture, Jonathan's brother
Simon became leader of the Jews. He rallied the people to defend
their land
against an attack by Trypho. Trypho was forced to abandon his attack by a
heavy snowfall.
As he returned to his own land, he killed Jonathan. Trypho killed Antiochus and became king of
Asia. Simon made peace with Demetrius. He also
renewed the treaties with Sparta and the Romans. Israel had peace during the time of
Simon.
Dear God, please give the world
leaders who work for peace
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
73-77 : Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper,
I wonder what's the use in trying to be good?
But then I realize that
everyone someday has to pay the bill
for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see
our world and religion in ruins,
I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that
God has promised to break the power
of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good
people. So may all people honor
the Lord our God and judge.
May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord,
you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good
and to trust you always

2.19-21: In God's Church you are not foreigners. You

Jesus, be the foundation stone

Luke
9.1-6: Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He
gave them power and authority to cast out devils and to heal sick people.
He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
So they set out and went from village to
village proclaiming the Good News and healing sick people.
Jesus, help me understand how some
people have a special gift for healing sick people....and how I can
better pray to heal sick people

Maccabees 12: Jonathan sent a delegation to Rome to renew
his treaty with the Romans. He also renewed treaties with other
groups, all the time using politics to secure peace for
Israel. But Demetrius once again made war on Jonathan,
this time with
a larger army than before. Jonathan bravely faced and defeated Demetrius'
army before they could enter the land of Israel. Not long after this Jonathan was tricked and
captured by Trypho who wanted to become king of Asia, replacing
Antiochus.
Dear God, please give wisdom

Psalm
72: O Lord, please bless the king,
that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the
people
and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts.
All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help

10.1-16: Many men followed Jesus as "fishers of

Jesus chose 12 of them and called them "apostles": Peter and his
brother Andrew; Zebedees' sons James
and John;
Philip and Bartholomew;
Thomas and Matthew;
James son of
Alphaeus; Thaddaeus,
Simon and Judas.
Jesus sent them to prepare his way by visiting
the places he would go.
He gave them power to cast out evil spirits and to heal all kinds of
sicknesses.
He said to them:
Proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near.
Cure the sick.
Raise the dead. Cleanse lepers. Cast out devils.
Jesus, please help all

Ecclesiastes
1-2: Everything
is temporary and passing. What's the use of all our toil? Our life is
over in a few days. What's the use of all our toil? The same fate awaits both
wise person and fool. Death is always just around the corner.
Dear God, please help me understand the meaning of life. Help me understand
that there is life in heaven after life on earth
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
90: O Lord you have
been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before
the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you,
a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We
humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or
80 for those who are strong. Make
us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In
the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives
more wisely

Colossians
3.1-2: Since you
have been brought back to true life with Christ, focus on heaven, where Christ
is, sitting at the Father's right hand. Let
your thoughts be more on heavenly things, less on the things that are on
earth.
Jesus, please help me think more often about heaven.....since that's where I
hope to spend all eternity! Help me understand how this present world is just a
temporary arrangement
Recording

Luke
12.15-21: Jesus told
the people this story: There was a rich man who, having had a good harvest from
his land, thought to himself "What am I to do? I don't have enough room to
store my crops". Then he said to himself "This is what I will do:
I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them,
and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for
many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But
God said to him "Fool!
This very night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your
possessions, who will get them?" So it is when people store up treasure for
themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with what I have, and not to be
greedy

Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison from 9am to 5.30pm
.....s pending more than 6 hours in just two sections of the prison
...overwhelmed by new drug trafficking cases. And last night about 7pm as I
waked home from Austin MTR station to Temple Street, relieved to get away from
the world of drugs, a local HK Chinese woman recognized me and said hello ... as
she counted a wad of HK$500 dollar notes in her left hand (...maybe worth about
$20,000). I asked her did she have a job. She said yes. I asked what was the
job. She quite openly and immediately replied "selling drugs". And
when I asked "any connection with Nigerians" she again promptly
replied "my supply". I offered to help her find a better job and said
I hoped not to see her in Tai Lam again (she was previously in detention)!

Maccabees 11: King Ptolemy of Egypt pretended to be friends
with Alexander.
But then he went to war with Alexander. Ptolemy's army won the battle,
but not long after both Ptolemy and Alexander died. Demetrius then became king.
He had an unstable relationship with Jonathan even though Jonathan on one
occasion rescued him from former supporters of Alexander. Demetrius was replaced as king by
a young Antiochus.
Antiochus confirmed Jonathan's position as leader of Israel.

Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge.
Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope.
In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help.
My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me.
Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed,

"Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous power?
He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary.
His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude.
His sisters are here, too. He's nobody special."
Jesus said to them
"A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house".
And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

1 Maccabees 10: When King Demetrius was challenged for the
throne by Alexander, Demetrius tried to get Jonathan's support for a
possible war with Alexander. Alexander then also sought Jonathan's support,
and appointed him as high priest of Israel. Demetrius again tried to win Jonathan's
support, but Jonathan
and the Jews did not trust Demetrius. Alexander and Demetrius went to war.
Demetrius died in the battle. Alexander then became king. He married
Cleopatra, daughter of Egypt's Ptolemy, thus securing a treaty with Egypt.
Jonathan met Alexander and Ptolemy and was
given great honor in their presence. About 147 B.C. Demetrius son of Demetrius
challenged Alexander for the throne.

Jonathan defeated the army of Demetrius.
Alexander then gave Jonathan new honors.

faith in you.

1 Maccabees 9:
King Demetrius sent another army against
Israel.
The size of this army was so large that many of Judas'
soldiers deserted him. Judas had only a small force to fight the
king's army.
Judas could have saved his life by running away from the battle,
but he courageously chose to stay and fight. Judas died in the battle and his troops fled.
Judas' brother Jonathan succeeded him as
leader of the Jews. Jonathan gradually reclaimed control of most
of the country

Israel’s genocide has thrown Gaza into
the final chaotic stages of a full-blown human catastrophe. Today’s
warning of an unfolding famine – one created entirely by Israel’s murderous
siege – must finally rouse the international community to act with a clarity
and resolve that has so far been beyond it.
World leaders have been variously divided, complicit, uncaring, and collectively ineffectual in stopping Israel’s campaign of erasure. In failing to protect the Palestinian people, they have no more excuses left. Ending Israel’s genocide of Gaza is a test not only of our world order but of our collective humanity.
Air drops, and brief pauses for relative crumbs of aid, is nowhere near enough to prevent human death at an unimaginable scale. We need urgent forceful diplomacy and whatever restrictive measures are necessary in order to achieve an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, break Israel’s siege and allow humanitarian aid to flow freely and safely throughout Gaza. The hostages and unlawfully detained prisoners must be released.
