Hello again from Melbourne where I am attending the annual retreat for Oblates
of the Australian Province at a conference centre in the Yarra
Valley. Yesterday I saw rabbits, kookaburras and coloured parrots! No
koala bears or kangaroos yet. During the
retreat I am praying for all dear HK friends ....and I ask your prayers for
the 38 Oblates on the retreat
Yesterday the official announcement was made: Mary's

the world (.. I try to send a donation each month...)

Proverbs
13-14: Guard your talk and you
will protect your life. People who talk too much, easily get into trouble.
Choose wise people as your friends and you will be happy. Choose foolish people
as friends and your problems will multiply. The heart knows its own grief best.
No human person can fully understand another person's heart. A peaceful heart is
necessary for good health. Envy is like a cancer in the bones. Injustice to the
poor is an insult to our Creator. Kindness to the poor gives honor to our
Creator. Virtue makes a nation great.
Sin causes empires to fall.
Dear God, please help everyone in our country to be wise and kind and just
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
102: O
Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my
days are vanishing like smoke, my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat
my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who
hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will
arise and have mercy on Sion. You will
hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray
to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last
from age to age.
Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Colossians
1.15-20: Christ
is the image of the unseen God. In him were created all things. All things were
created through him and for him. Before anything was created, he existed. He
holds all things in unity. The Church is his body. He is its head. God
wants all things to be reconciled through him who brought peace by his death on
the Cross
Jesus, God the Son become man, may our world find reconciliation and peace in
you

Matthew
17.14-20:
A man went down on his knees
and pleaded with Jesus: "Lord, please help my son. He is crazy and does
crazy things like falling into fire and into water. I asked your disciples
to heal him but they were not able to." There was an evil spirit oppressing
the boy, so Jesus ordered the spirit to leave the boy. The boy was healed
immediately. Jesus' disciples asked him "Why were we unable to expel that
spirit?" Jesus answered "Because
your faith is not strong enough."
Jesus, please increase my faith, so that my prayers can be of more help to
other people

of Jesus' dear mother Mary
Hello again from Melbourne where the annual retreat for Oblates
of the Australian Province has begun at a conference centre in the Yarra
Valley. A most beautiful setting ... up in the hills ... only mountain
trees outside my window ... a bit different from Temple Street in HK. During the
retreat I will be praying for all dear HK friends ....and I ask your prayers for
the 38 Oblates on the retreat. I hope HK is safe during another Typhoon Signal 8

For Feast of Birthday of Mary
Micah 5.1-4: The
Lord says this: But you, Bethlehem, the least of the clans of Judah, out of
you will be born for me, the one who is to rule over Israel. His origin goes
back to the distant past, to the days of old. The Lord's help will be on hold until
the time when she who is to give birth, gives birth. He will stand and
feed his flock with the power of the Lord, with the majesty of the name of his
God. He himself will be peace.

Romans
8.28-30: We
know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those
who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose. They are
the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his
Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers and sisters. He
called those he intended for this; those he called, he justified, and
with those he justified, he shared his glory.

Matthew
1.18-25: This
is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. But
before they lived together, Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy
Spirit. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Joseph,
descendant of David, do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife". Her
baby has been conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to
a son. You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will save his people
from their sins." Joseph took Mary to his home as his wife. She
gave birth to a son, Jesus.
Dear Jesus, Son
of God, son of Mary, step-son of Joseph, please help me understand how you are
the Saviour of the world
Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
If it's Mary's birthday, how come the readings are all about Jesus' birth?! Because Mary is the moon, Jesus is the sun .... all of Mary's light/importance comes from Jesus and reflects Jesus' light/importance. Honoring Mary is a very ancient and very special way of honoring Jesus. Just like in any place/culture we give honor to a person by honoring their parents

c.f. readings for Sunday 23
Wisdom
10-19: Wisdom has
been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a
close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of creation.
Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise
people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people try to be
good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our
refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world
existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are
like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our
life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make
us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In
the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives
more wisely
Listen

Philemon
9-25: While
here in prison, I have helped someone you know to become a believer. He is
carrying this letter - Onesimus. I'm
sending him back to you, no longer your slave, but your brother in Christ.
Please welcome him as you would welcome me. And let me pay for anything he stole
from you. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you
Jesus, please put an end to slavery in the world
Listen

Luke
14.25-27: Great crowds accompanied
Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. "If any man wants to be
my disciples he
must realise that I am more important than his father, mother, wife, children,
brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too. Anyone who does not carry
his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple"
Reflection on the above readings: Most translations of today's Gospel have Jesus saying we must hate our own parents etc ....which is ridiculous ...Jesus would never say such a thing. What he is saying is that our relationship with him must be number one. In fact, if Jesus is No. 1 in my life, my love for parents etc will increase! (If the poor translation is used, what a terrible Gospel for Father's Day today in Australia!)

Proverbs
11-12: Pride
comes before a fall. Humility brings wisdom. A city prospers when good
people are many. A city falls when good people are few. Good people are kind to
animals. Bad people are cruel to animals. Good people overlook insults. Good
people's speech promotes harmony in society. Worry makes our hearts heavy.
Kindly words from others make us glad.
Lord, help me to be kind and wise
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
101: My song is of mercy and
justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I
will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People
who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People
who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Colossians
1.9-14: I pray that you will
continue to grow in your Christian life, a life full of good deeds. Never give
in when trials come, but bravely, even joyfully, carry your cross each day.
Keep on thanking the Father who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and
brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we gain our
freedom, the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for letting me be a Christian. Help me be a good Christian

Mark
9.14-29: A
man brought his son to Jesus and pleaded: "Master, there is a spirit of
dumbness in my son. When it takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground, and
he foams at the mouth and goes rigid". They brought the boy. As soon as the
spirit saw Jesus, it threw the boy into convulsions. Jesus asked the father
"How long has this been happening?" He replied "From
childhood....please help us!" Jesus said "Everything is possible if
you have faith". The father cried out "Please increase my faith!"
Jesus rebuked the evil spirit: "Deaf
and dumb spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again".
The spirit came out, but the boy seemed to have died. Jesus took him by the
hand and helped him up. Jesus' disciples asked "Why were we unable to expel
that spirit?" Jesus replied "Only prayer can drive out that kind of
spirit"
Jesus, please help me pray better, so that I can help other people more

9.28-36: One day Jesus
took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray. On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed. His
clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared
and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to
be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow.
From the cloud came a voice: "This
is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him". When the voice had finished
speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance

On
the menu of Sep 3, below, I mentioned how I met a Chinese Anglican priest on the
train to Camberwell two days ago. Well, last night at a Chinese restaurant, my
Australian provincial, Fr Andrew Chen (who is from China) and I had a meal with
that priest, Fr Conrad Chiu and his dear wife Teresa ...both of them Western
medical doctors, both from HK. A most beautiful evening ... inspiring to hear
their faith stories. They work in the same clinic at Box Hill, with Conrad also
spending half the week in ministry service. And ... another story of Providence
....staying with them in their home is a student from HK who is now studying at
a school in Melbourne. That student, Samantha, was part of a group who sang at
the Christmas concert in front of MercyHK's canteen in Temple Street last

Hello from the Oblate Provincial House at Camberwell in Melbourne where I arrived yesterday afternoon after an overnight flight from ...the first hour of which (12.20am to 1.30am) was spent on the tarmac in HK for technical repairs, because of a problem that emerged just before we tried to taxi to the runway for take-off!
From Melbourne airport I took the airport bus to Southern Cross train station where I got a train to Camberwell.... a five station trip. At the second station a young Chinese man wearing clerical dress got on the train and sat in the only available seat ...opposite my seat...he is an Anglican priest! Born in HK....went to Kowloon Wah Yan College.... been in Australia more than 15 years ...is a Western medical doctor (so is his wife) ...he became a priest only a year or so ago. Three days a week he works as a doctor at a clinic. The other days as a priest. An amazing man. I have invited him to visit the Dr Jesus Centre in HK. For me, meeting him so providentially is a sign that the Good Lord wanted me to make this trip to Australia!
Am having computer problems. So that's all for this time. Will try to update this blog each day as usual.
Thank you for a prayer.
