Tues Sep 23

For most of yesterday HK had a lovely blue sky and only a few beautiful white clouds ... but people's faith in the weather bureau was absolute: not panic buying, but at least busy buying and stocking up ... an interesting example of believing in something (a typhoon) that we cannot yet see!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Ecclesiastes 3: There's a time and a season for everything: A time for giving birth, a time for dying. A time for tears and mourning, a time for laughter and dancing. A time for embracing, a time to refrain from embracing. A time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.
Dear Lord, please help me to do the right thing at the right time

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Listen

1 Thessalonians 1.7 - 2.12: You are a great example to other believers, since it was from you that the word of the Lord spread to many places. Everyone knows how we planted the Good News in your hearts, and how you broke with idolatry and became servants of the living God. Let me remind you how we loved and served you, like loving parents caring for their dear children
Jesus, thank you for the people who nurtured me as a Christian

Listen

John 8: 42, 46, 56-58: Jesus said to the people "If God were your father, you would love me, since I have come from God and I speak the truth. You avoid the truth, because your father is the father of lies, the Devil. Abraham rejoiced at the thought of my coming. He saw it in the future and was glad". The people said "You are not yet 50 years old. How could you have seen Abraham?" Jesus replied "I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I Am". The people then picked up stones to throw at Jesus for claiming to be God. But Jesus safely left the Temple
Jesus, you who existed as God the Son from all eternity, please increase my love for the truth, and help me avoid lies

Ecclesiastes 1 & 2: Everything is temporary and  passing. What's the use of all our toil? Our life is over in a few days. What's the use of all our toil? The same fate awaits both wise person and fool. Death is always just around the corner.
Dear God, please help me understand the meaning of life. Help me understand that there is life in heaven after life on earth

My recording of this reading

Psalms 114 & 115: When Israel came out of Egypt, Jacob's descendents from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple, Israel became his kingdom. Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. To you may the Lord grant increase, to you and all your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth
Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings

1 Thessalonians 1.1-6: From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy to the Church of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ in Thessalonika. Wishing you grace and peace. In my prayers for you, I thank God our Father for your faith in action, your work for love, and your persevering hope. When we brought the Good News to you, it came to you not just as words, but as power from the Holy Spirit. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, you accepted the Good News, despite great opposition from many quarters

c.f. readings for Sunday 25

Amos 1-9: It was God who formed the mountains and created the wind. The Lord is his name. He says to the House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live. Do not go to the places of idol worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Hate evil and love good. Injustice and swindling, exploitation of the poor, this is the reason for earthquakes and disaster.
Lord, please help me to do good and avoid evil

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

 Listen

1 Timothy 1.18 - 2.8: My advice is that, first of all, there should be prayers offered for everyone - petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving - and especially for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet. To do this is right, and will please God our saviour: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for them all. He is the evidence of this, sent at the appointed time, and I have been named a herald and apostle of it and - I am telling the truth and no lie - a teacher of the faith and the truth to the pagans.

Luke 16:

Jesus said to his disciples:  use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when it fails you, they will welcome you into the tents of eternity. The man who can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great; the man who is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in great. If then you cannot be trusted with money, that tainted thing, who will trust you with genuine riches? And if you cannot be trusted with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own? No servant can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.

Sat Sep 20

Yesterday, my first full day back from Australia, was spent starting on the long job of processing dozens of letters from prisoners.

MercyHK (through Lucia) and Voice for Prisoners (through Jane) have worked together to help a woman from Africa come to HK to receive the 7 month baby of her imprisoned sister. The baby was "handed out" yesterday afternoon, then came with her aunt and Jane for a visit to the Dr Jesus Centre ... before a flight from HK last night (paid for by MercyHK). I first met the baby when she was minus 8 months in her mother's womb in prison. God bless everyone connected with this very special case!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Proverbs 30, 31: Every word of God is true and of great value. Do not change or misinterpret God's words. Do not give way to sexual excess. Do not give way to drunkenness. Be the voice of the poor, the unwanted. Uphold the rights of the needy. Happy the man who finds a good wife. She is far beyond the price of pearls. She looks after her household with care. She works diligently for her family. She holds out her hand to the poor. She opens her arms to the needy. Charm is deceitful, and beauty empty. The woman who is wise is the one to praise.
Lord, thank you for all the wisdom in the Book of Proverbs!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with integrity. Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten. Lord, please help me do more for the poor
Listen

Colossians 4.3-21: Pray for me, in my chains, that I may proclaim the message of Christ as clearly as I should. Be tactful with people who are not Christians. Use friendly conversation with them. Greetings from the believers here with me. Greetings to all the believers in your area. Grace be with you all
Jesus, may my conversation with non-Christians help them know you

John 8.1-11While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you say?" They said this to test him, looking for something to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied. "Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The leaders' sins?
"If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could claim innocence?"
(Psalm 130)

Proverbs 27-29: Do not boast about tomorrow, since you do not know what will happen today. Let others praise you, but do not praise yourself. Better open reproof than voiceless love. From one who loves, wounds are well-intentioned. From one who hates, kisses are ominous. He who admits his faults will prosper. He who confesses and renounces his faults will find mercy. A roaring lion, a hungry bear,
such is a bad ruler of a poor people
.

Lord, please help me practise the ideas in these words

My recording of this reading

Psalm 111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart. Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever. The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all times. He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Dear Lord, please help me to love and honor you every day

John 7: 32, 45, 46: The religious leaders sent the Temple police to arrest Jesus. When the police returned to the leaders without Jesus, the leaders asked "Why didn't you arrest him?" The police replied "There has never been anyone who has spoken like him"
Jesus, in the history of the world, there has never been anyone who has spoken about goodness and truth like you

Hello one last time from Iona College in Brisbane where yesterday I was kindly invited to give a sharing at the weekly assembly for the whole school...nearly 2,000 students and staff. The assembly hall is a massive building called "Provence" ....in honour of Oblate founder Eugene de Mazenod who was from Provence in France. Provence and its surrounding facilities are so good that they have been booked by France for the Olympic Games due to be held here in Brisbane in 2032!
This afternoon I am due to take a flight back to HK.  God bless all the people I have met in Australia over the past 16 days!

Proverbs 25-26:  Cloud and wind, but no rain. Such is the person who makes a lot of promises but doesn't keep them. Don't over-tax your neighbor's hospitality. If people who don't like you are hungry or thirsty, give them something to eat or drink. In this way you will shame them into being better people. Rain comes by the north wind. A ravaged face comes from a backbiting tongue. An open town, without defences. Such is a person lacking self-control. As a dog returns to its vomit so foolish people return to their folly. Interfering in the quarrels of other people is like catching a stray dog by the tail. No wood, and the fire goes out. No talebearer, and quarrelling dies down.
Lord, please stop me from being  critical of other people

My recording of this reading

Psalms 109-110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Listen

Colossians 3.15-16: May the peace of Christ reign in your hearts. Always be thankful. Let the message of Christ, in all its richness, find a home in you. Help each other grow in wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts, sing songs to God.
Jesus, live in my heart. Please live in my heart

Listen

John 7.37-39:
During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly  in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty, come to me. Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Holy Spirit, flowing from the heart of Jesus, please increase your influence in my life

Proverbs 23-24: If someone invites you for a meal, be careful not to make a pig of yourself. Don't waste your breath talking to foolish people. Make sure your children receive a wholesome discipline. Don't be a drunkard. Don't be a glutton. Avoid prostitution. Brains are better than brawn. If you make a big mistake and fall, get up and start again.
Lord, please help me put into practice the ideas in these words

My recording of this reading

Psalm 108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations. With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every day

Listen

Colossians 3.12-14: You are God's special friends. He loves you. You should be clothed in sincere compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Allow for other's weaknesses. Forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you. You must forgive others. Over all these clothes, to keep them together and to complete them, put on love
Jesus, help me be a better and kinder person

Listen

Luke 10.17-24: The 72 came back rejoicing. "Lord", they said, "even the devils submit to us when we use your name". Jesus replied "Yes, I have given you power to tread underfoot the whole strength of the enemy. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you. Rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven. Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it"
Jesus, thank you for the gift of faith
