Today I'm due to be at the High Court in the morning for the sentencing of a "drug mule" from South America (who took part in my anti-drug campaign, so I was able to write a mitigation letter for them) .... then in the afternoon I'm due to attend a function at the Consulate of Indonesia (to warn people about the danger of drug trafficking)

Song of Songs 1 & 2:
The bride says
:
Kiss me. Your love is better than wine.
How right it is to love you, you whom my heart loves.

The bridegroom says:
How beautiful you are, my love, how beautiful you are.

The bride:
He has taken me to his banquet hall
and his banner over me is love.

The groom:
Come then, my love, my lovely one, come.
Show me your face and let me hear your voice,
for your voice is sweet and your face is beautiful.

The bride:
My beloved is mine and I am his.

Dear God, please give me a lover's love for you
My recording of this reading

Psalm 125: Those who put their trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, that cannot be shaken. Jerusalem, the mountains surround her, so the Lord surrounds his people, now and forever.
Lord, please help us be more aware of your protecting presence

1 Thessalonians 5.1-11: The Lord's coming will not find us unprepared if we live a good life. You are not children of the night and of darkness. You are children of the light and of the day. Put on faith and love for a breastplate. Put on the hope of salvation for a helmet. Encourage one another. Strengthen one another
Jesus, please help me be a person of
encouragement, not discouragement

Readings for Feast of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael

Tobit 12 (Raphael): When Tobit's banquet was finished, Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit and Tobias that he was an angel sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7 angels who stand ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of giving God thanks. And never tire of helping the poor." Raphael farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them. They praised and thanked God for all he had done for them.
Dear God, thank you for all your love, all your blessings

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!"
Lord, when we remember how much you love us and help us, every day of the year is a Thanksgiving Day
Recording

Revelation 12 (Michael): Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought the dragon and his angels.
Michael won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the serpent, known as the Devil or Satan, was hurled down to earth. His angels were hurled down with him. The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus.
Jesus, may your holy angels protect us from Satan

Recording

Luke 1 (Gabriel): In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb
Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

Notice how the names Raphael, Michael and Gabriel all end in "el" which means "God"!
When we are sick we can ask Raphael ("Medicine of God") to pray for us. When we are in danger, we can ask Michael ("Who is like God?") to pray for us. When we feel powerless and weak, we can ask Gabriel ("God is my strength) to pray for us

c.f. readings for Sunday 26

Amos 1-9: It was God who formed the mountains and created the wind. The Lord is his name. He says to the House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live. Do not go to the places of idol worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Hate evil and love good. Injustice and swindling, exploitation of the poor, this is the reason for earthquakes and disaster
Lord, please help me to do good and avoid evil

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

 Listen

1 Timothy 6.11-13: As a man of God, avoid things like greed and disputes. You must aim to be a saint, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith, and win for yourself eternal life. Be a constant witness to goodness and truth, like Jesus who spoke up as a witness for the truth in front of Pontius Pilate.
Jesus, help me be a witness to goodness and truth

 Listen

Luke 16.19-31: Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to dress in expensive clothes and feast magnificently every day. At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his side. So the rich man cried out "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames". "My son", replied Abraham, "remember that during your life, good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here, while you are in agony"
Jesus, please help me understand how I should do more to help poor people

Ecclesiastes 10 & 11: Foolish people are lazy,  and careless in speech. Wise people are diligent, and careful in speech. Young people, rejoice in your youth. Young people, remember your Creator in the days of your youth. Let everyone remember: our life is short. Don't waste your life. Live life well. Our days pass quickly and old age is soon at the doorstep. Old age: when to go uphill is difficult and even walking is not easy. In all we do, let us love and honor the Lord our God. At the end of our lives on earth, it is to God we will have to give an account of the way we have lived.
Lord, make us know the shortness of our life so that we may have more wisdom in living our lives
My recording of this reading

Psalms 120 & 121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever.
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Listen

1 Thessalonians 4.13-18: You asked us about the situation of people who have died. Do not mourn in an unhealthy way for them, like people who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and that it will be the same for everyone who dies in God's friendship: God will give them life with Jesus. They will live in God's House for ever With thoughts such as these you should comfort one another in times of mourning
Jesus, please increase my faith in the life to come

Listen

Matthew 11.25-30One day Jesus prayed: Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am joyfully amazed at the way simple people understand and accept what I'm saying, while proud and clever people miss the plot. And he said to the ordinary people: Come to me, all you who are treated unfairly by unjust religious laws. I will give you peace and justice. Learn from me, and you will know peace, for I am gentle and humble of heart.
Jesus, please help people who are suffering from unjust religious laws

Listen

Reflection: Most people don't realise that "heavily burdened" (usual translation in Gospel passage) refers to unjust religious laws!

Ecclesiastes 8 & 9: I see injustice in the world: good people are treated badly; bad people are treated well. I do know, however, that good people are in the special care of God. We must try to be happy as much as we can. We must try to make the most of our lives. Spend your life with the woman you love. Whatever work you have to do, do it well.
Lord, please help me to be optimistic and cheerful

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Listen

1 Thessalonians 4.1-11: We urge you and appeal to you in the Lord Jesus to make more and more progress in the kind of life you are meant to live. God wants you to be holy. He wants you to keep away from fornication. Live life peacefully. Get a decent job and earn your living
Jesus, make me be a better person, a better Christian

John 10.11-14: Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. A hired man, since he has no real concern for the sheep, abandons them and runs away if he sees a wolf coming. I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep, and my own sheep know me"
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help me to be a good sheep, and a good shepherd

Yesterday during typhoon Signal No. 10 I went to McDonald's in Jordan. And again I say "God bless McDonald's for letting needy people stay there". Thanks to a recent donor at our canteen in Temple Street, I had some coupons which could be used at McDs, so I gave them out to a number of people who were "sitting hungry" ... and then when I walked down to McDs in Nathan Road I gave out the remaining coupons to other needy people. Nearly all my walking was without an umbrella ...very little rain ..."super typhoon"? During the day around 30 needy people collected rice meals from our canteen. And see below

Ecclesiastes 6 & 7:  Even if a person studies wisdom, what use is it? Wise person and fool both must die. Yet wisdom gives protection and strength. And wisdom reminds us that all of us make mistakes.
Therefore we should be slow to condemn others.

Lord, may the memory of my own mistakes make me slow to judge other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Listen

1 Thessalonians 3.11-13: May God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ make it easy for us to visit you again. May the Lord be generous in increasing your love, and make you love one another and the whole human race as much as we love you. May the Lord so confirm your hearts in holiness, that you may be blameless in the sight of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus Christ comes with all his saints
Jesus, please increase my love for the whole human race

John 10.1-10:
Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the gate of the sheepfold. If anyone enters the sheepfold by some other means than the gate, that person is a thief. The person who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the flock. The sheep hear his voice as he calls each one by name and leads them out of the sheepfold. When he has brought them out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that people may have life, not just now but for ever"
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help more and more people hear your voice and follow you
