I wish all dear readers a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Recently I met a local 80 year old HK man whose working career spanned 45 years ...for just one employer. During those 45 years the man had his annual holidays and observed public holidays, but never once ... not even once ....took a day off for sickness or any other reason. Life is a bit different these days ...

c.f. readings for Feast of the Rosary

Genesis 3: A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you." God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came, and to dust you will return." The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you
My recording of this reading

Luke 1.46: My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.  He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Recording

Acts 1.12: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers.
Recording

Luke 1.26: In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her

Reflection on the above readings:

Many religions use beads to help pray. Beads help us to remember what we're doing. Beads help us to focus on praying ... even as we ride a bus or walk along the street. My own custom is to pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary at the start of each decade of the Rosary, and then for the 9 other beads to use words from the Bible readings of the day. So for today, the first decade might use a bead or two for each of these words: "the snake tempted them", "they disobeyed God", "Someday a member of the human race will defeat you", "from dust you came, to dust you will return", the first people were named "man" and "woman". Then the Glory be to the Father, then the "O my Jesus" prayer. Then to the next decade

Wisdom 1 & 2: Love virtue, honesty and simplicity, since God is found by people whose hearts are seeking goodness. Selfishness, dishonesty and bad habits, these close the door of our hearts and prevent Wisdom from entering. Bad people persecute good people, since the lives of good people are a reproach to bad people.
Lord, please help me to be a good person

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!
Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

2 Thessalonians 1.1-5: From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy to the Church in Thessalonika: grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We take special pride in you because of your perseverance, despite persecutions and other troubles you have to face. People who refuse to accept the Good News are facing an eternal penalty: to be excluded forever from the presence of the Lord. So we pray that God will help you be the sort of people he wants you to be. In this way our Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified in you
Jesus,  help me "keep going" when trials come

Luke 10.38-42: Jesus and his disciples visited the home of Martha and Mary. Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to him speaking. Martha complained "Lord, do you not care that my sister is not helping me with the serving?" But the Lord answered "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things. Mary has made a better choice"
Jesus, please bless my serving and my listening!

c.f. readings for Sunday 27

Minor prophets: Pride of heart leads us astray. See how they are listless, those whose souls are not at peace. Lord, I have heard of all your wonderful deeds in the past. Do them again in our day, Lord! Even when everything seems hopeless, I trust in you Lord, I praise you Lord. Seek the Lord, all you humble people. Seek integrity, seek humility. In the days to come, people will say "We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is with you". Rejoice heart and soul, people of Jerusalem. See, your king comes to you. He is humble and riding on a donkey.
Dear God, thank you for all the beautiful teachings and stories in  "The Old Testament", ("The First Testament"). I now look forward to your message in "The New Testament" ("The Second Testament")

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

 Listen

2 Timothy 1.6-8: I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands. God's gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love and self-control. Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord. Like me and with me, put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News
Jesus, help me put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News

 Listen

Luke 17.5-10: The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "Were your faith the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, "Be uprooted and planted in the sea," and it would obey you. Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, "Come and have your meal immediately"? Would he not be more likely to say, "Get my supper laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards"? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, "We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty."

Reflection on the above readings: With the apostles let us often pray "Jesus, please increase our  faith"!

c.f. Feast of St Francis of Assisi

Galatians 6: The only thing I can boast about is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not; what matters is for each person to become an altogether new creature. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, who form the Israel of God. I want no more trouble from anybody after this; the marks on my body are those of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.

The Prayer of Saint Francis: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Psalm 127: If the Lord does not build the house,  in vain do its builders labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from going later to rest, but from the Lord's blessing. Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb.

Luke 10.29-37: The religious leader then asked another question: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied "A man on a journey was attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him seriously injured. A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help.  But a lowly foreigner who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man?" The leader replied "The one who helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"

c.f. Feast of the Guardian Angels

Exodus 23: The Lord says this: "I myself will send an angel before you to guard you as you go and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Give him reverence and listen to all that he says. Offer him no defiance; he would not pardon such a fault, for my name is in him. If you listen carefully to his voice and do all that I say, I shall be enemy to your enemies, foe to your foes. My angel will go before you."
 My recording of this reading

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
 Recording

Acts 12: When Peter was rescued from prison, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John Mark where people were praying for him, thinking he was still in prison. A servant girl opened the door when Peter knocked. She ran inside to tell the group that Peter was at the door. The group did not believe Peter was there. One of them said  "it must be his angel". Eventually they opened the door and Peter described how an angel had rescued him from prison.
 Recording

Matthew 18.1: The disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, "I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven."
