Tues Nov 18
I had a busy day yesterday at the Dr Jesus Centre: a Voice for Prisoners meeting in the morning, then the usual gathering for homeless people, then a meeting with staff from a Consulate, then some special visitors. No trouble sleeping last night!

39. From the first centuries, the Fathers of the Church recognized in the poor a privileged way to reach God, a special way to meet him. Charity shown to those in need was not only seen as a moral virtue, but a concrete expression of faith in the incarnate Word. The community of the faithful, sustained by the strength of the Holy Spirit, was rooted in being close to the poor, whom they considered not just an “appendage,” but an essential part of Christ’s living body. For example, while he was on his way to face martyrdom, Saint Ignatius of Antioch exhorted the community of Smyrna not to neglect the duty to carry out acts of charity for those most in need, admonishing them not to behave like those who oppose God. “But consider those who are of a different opinion with respect to the grace of Christ, which has come to us, how opposed they are to the will of God. They have no regard for love; no care for the widow, or the orphan, or the oppressed; of the bond, or of the free; of the hungry, or of the thirsty.” [27] The Bishop of Smyrna, Polycarp, expressly stated that ministers of the Church should take care of the poor: “And let the presbyters be compassionate and merciful to all, bringing back those that wander, visiting all the sick, and not neglecting the widow, the orphan, or the poor, but always ‘providing for that which is becoming in the sight of God and man’.” [28] From these two witnesses, we see that the Church appears as a mother of the poor, a place of welcome and justice.

Isaiah
25: On Mount Zion in Jerusalem,
the Lord will prepare for all peoples
a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. On this mountain
he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away
the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God,
I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor,
a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and

to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

Psalm
27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall
I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though
an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this
I long:
to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not
your face.
I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart.
Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my
help.
I will always praise you

Hebrews
4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active.
It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who
is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was
tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne
of grace.
He will give us grace when we are in need of help
Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

Luke
22.1-6: Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of
the Passover which was only a few days away. The
religious leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them
from killing Jesus. But then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot who
was one of the 12 apostles. Judas went to the leaders to plan how to
capture Jesus. The leaders agreed to give Judas some money for his
help. Judas then began looking for an opportunity to
betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around
Jesus, please protect me from Satan's
influence, and from any sort of pride that might make me want to abandon
your friendship

38. A little less than two centuries later, another deacon, Saint Lawrence, will demonstrate his fidelity to Jesus Christ in a similar way by uniting martyrdom and service to the poor. [23] From Saint Ambrose’s account, we learn that Lawrence, a deacon in Rome during the pontificate of Pope Sixtus II, was forced by the Roman authorities to turn over the treasures of the Church. “The following day he brought the poor with him. Questioned about where the promised treasures might be, he pointed to the poor saying, ‘These are the treasures of the Church’.” [24] While narrating this event, Saint Ambrose asks: “What treasures does Jesus have that are more precious than those in which he loves to show himself?” [25] And, remembering that ministers of the Church must never neglect the care of the poor, much less accumulate goods for their own benefit, he says: “This task must be carried out with sincere faith and wise foresight. Certainly, if anyone derives personal advantage from it, he commits a crime; but if he distributes the proceeds to the poor or redeems a prisoner, he performs a work of mercy.” [26]

Israel is going the wrong way in forgetting God's protection. It has no thought for its Maker,

Malachy 3.19-20: The day is coming now, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and the evil-doers will be like stubble. The day that is coming is going to burn them up, says the Lord of Hosts, leaving them neither root nor stalk. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will shine out with healing in its rays.
Psalm
98: Sing a new song to the Lord
for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has
made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has
remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the
earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring
out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music.
Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the
rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the
Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He
will rule the world with justice and the peoples with
fairness.

Thessalonians 3.10-16: We
gave you a rule when we were with you: not to let anyone have any food if he
refused to do any work. Yet we hear that some of you are living in idleness, doing
no work themselves but interfering with everyone else's work. In the Lord
Jesus Christ, we order and call on such people to go on quietly working and
earning the food that they eat. Never grow tired of doing what is right. May the
Lord of peace give you peace always and everywhere

Luke
21.3-38: Jesus said to his
disciples that Jerusalem would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout
the world. He also spoke of how his followers would be persecuted, and of
the end of the world: "The planets will be shaken, nations will be in
agony, bewildered by the force of the oceans. Then they will see me coming
in a cloud with great power and glory. To
prepare for your own end of earthly life, stay faithful to prayer and goodness.
Don't let your heart be coarsened by debauchery, drunkenness and material
cares". In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent the daytime in the
Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would gather round him to listen
to him. Then he would spend the night on the Mount of Olives.
Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer and goodness

37. Saint Paul recounts that among the faithful of the nascent Christian community not many were “wise according to the flesh, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth” (1 Cor 1:26). However, despite their poverty, the early Christians were clearly aware of the necessity to care for those who were most in need. Already at the dawn of Christianity, the Apostles laid their hands on seven men chosen from the community. To a certain extent, they integrated them into their own ministry, instituting them for the service — diakonía in Greek — of the poorest (cf. Acts 6:1-5). It is significant that the first disciple to bear witness to his faith in Christ to the point of shedding his blood was Stephen, who belonged to this group. In him, the witness of caring for the poor and of martyrdom are united.

36. This desire reflects the understanding that the Church “recognizes in those who are poor and who suffer, the likeness of its poor and suffering founder.” [20] Indeed, since the Church is called to identify with those who are least, at her core “[T]here can be no room for doubt or for explanations which weaken so clear a message… We have to state, without mincing words, that there is an inseparable bond between our faith and the poor.” [21] In this regard, we have numerous witnesses from disciples of Christ spanning almost two millennia. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the
Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer

My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me.
They make holes in my hands and my feet.
They await my death. They divide my clothing among them,
they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that you are good and
holy.
I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb
and entrusted me to my mother's breast.
To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now.

34. The life of the first ecclesial communities, described in the pages of the Bible and handed down to us as God’s revealed word, has been given to us as an example to imitate, but also as a witness to the faith that works through charity and an enduring inspiration for generations yet to come. Throughout the centuries, those pages have moved the hearts of Christians to love and to perform works of charity, which, like fruitful seeds, never cease to produce a rich harvest.

peace. You will be totally destroyed, because you rejected God's offer of
grace". Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out
the sellers. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house
will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers'
den". Each day Jesus taught in the Temple. The leaders wanted to
do away with him, but they didn't know how to, since most of the
ordinary people had great respect for Jesus
Jesus, please don't let me ever reject your
friendship
