Dear Friends
According
to Wikipedia, Sebastian
Junger published his book The
Perfect Storm in 1997
and its success brought the phrase "perfect storm" into popular
culture.
Its adoption was accelerated with the release of the 2000
feature film adaptation of Junger's book.
Since the release of the movie, the phrase has grown to mean
any event where a situation is aggravated
drastically by an exceptionally rare combination of circumstances
Hong
Kong is now facing a "perfect storm" whose elements are:
* A new chief-excecutive, Mr Leung, is due to take office on July 1, but
his credibility was
questioned during the election period when
he failed to declare a business interest that compromised
his role as judge of a competition to choose a company for West Kowloon Arts Hub
project
*
His competitor for chief-executive, Mr Tang, also pre-Beijing-approved, was even
less credible because of many personal
and other scandals, not the least being an illegal
construction in his home
* Mr Leung took advantage of Mr Tang's illegal construction embarrassment, and replaced him as front runner, and eventual winner, of the chief-executive race....saying publicly he had no illegal construction problems
* In the past week Ming Pao newspaper has forced Mr Leung to admit his home had many illegal constructions
*
A group of politicians is considering an appeal to the courts that Mr Leung's
"election" is void, since he mislead
the public about his illegal constructions
* Mr Leung is due to be sworn in as new CE on Sunday, July 1 (the anniversary of HK's return to China)
* July 1 has become the annual protest day for all sorts of groups and grievances.
* This year's July 1 will be extra large because of the CE issue, and the issue of Lee Wangyang on the Mainland
*
President Hu Jintao is due in HK June 29....to install the new CE. The
president's presence will be like
red rag to a bull for protestors re the CE issue, the Lee Wangyang issue, and
many other issues
* HK media has been relentless in exposing the cases of Mr Tang, Mr Leung, Lee Wangyang....so that HK people are really fired up ....and a record crowd of protestors can be expected on July 1
*
President Hu would be wise not to come to HK at this time....just as Pope
Benedict decided not to visit Ireland
for the recent International Eucharistic Congress, because the Irish people were
in no mood to welcome someone they feel
is responsible for many of the problems in the Irish Church. But President Hu
would lose face if he cancelled his visit
because of protests in "his" own country
All of which adds up to a perfect storm.
The only way out of all this to rescue everyone concerned? A physical perfect storm, a typhoon ! on June 29....to give Pres Hu an excuse for not coming....with Typhoon Signal No. 8 on July 1 to force a cancellation of all protests...and then a resignation by Mr Leung with a fresh election.
