Mail from HK to many parts of Africa, South America and even Malaysia can take weeks,  which is why I am one of a number of people in HK who help prisoners send mail to their families, especially in the period between a person's arrest and trial (which can take a year or more). Prisoners send me a letter, I scan it and email or W/App it to the family. The family then send back a reply email or W/App which I print and post to the prisoner. If any HK reader has access to a post box (... best not to use home address ... ) and a W/App number which would be safe to use, and would like to help in this project, please contact me: jdwomi@gmail.com

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 2: Before King David died, he encouraged his son Solomon to love the Lord with all his heart and soul. Solomon executed his main enemies and rivals, including Adonijah who had again plotted to become king. Solomon then was secure and safe as king.
Dear God, thank you for the life of David who, despite his faults, loved you with all his heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 46: (c.f. famous hymn by Martin Luther "A Mighty Fortress is our God", and also the hymn "Be Still and Know that I am God")
God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".

Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Listen

1 John 3.1-3: Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's children. And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ.
Jesus, please help me be more like you

Listen

Mark 14.17-25: On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles. While they were eating, Jesus told them he knew he would be betrayed by one of them. He told Judas he knew he was the betrayer. Then Jesus took some bread, blessed it and gave it to his apostles saying "This is my body". Then he took a cup of wine, blessed it and gave it to them saying "This is my blood".
Jesus, please help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

Mon Feb 25

To combat a recent mini-surge in drug mules from South Africa arrested at HK airport, the "No More Mules" team is using FB "boost" to reach readers in Johannesburg, and I have also contacted a local radio station and an Oblate confrere in Johannesburg - to try to warn people about the danger of bringing drugs to HK

Last night at a local hospital I again visited 75 year old Nick from the UK whose charge of drug trafficking was dropped in the High Court last Friday. Nick was in detention for two years. He is expected to be in hospital for a week or two recovering from an infection before returning to the UK. Last night he made a one minute recording - which was played on local radio - to greet inmates at Lai Chi Kok and Stanley prisons where he was a guest of the HK government. Recording is here (opens in I.E.  but not Chrome !?)

1 Kings 1: When King David was very old and near the end of his life, Absalom's brother Adonijah plotted to become king. The prophet Nathan therefore advised Bathsheba to go to David and remind him that he had promised to let Bathsheba's son Solomon become king. David then summoned the priests and royal guards and ordered them and Nathan to anoint Solomon as king.
Dear God, please give the world good leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Listen

1 John 2.9-16: Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the dark. Do not love the ungodly values of this world generated by the sensual body, the lustful eye and a pride in possessions. Such things do not come from God.
Jesus, please help me avoid worldly values

Listen

Mark 14.1-11: Two days before the Passover festival, the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him put to death. During these days Jesus had a meal at the home of Simon the leper. At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head. The woman understood  that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest Jesus at a convenient time. The leaders promised to give Judas money. Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest.
Jesus,  forgive me for the times when I have not been faithful  to you and your teaching

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The woman in today's Gospel is Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus. The oil cost a year's salary! And Mary ignored more than one custom of the time. See here

When I visited Nick in hospital last night (see item at top of menu) I asked him if there was anything I could get him. He asked for some bottled water, a newspaper and ... an ice cream. He said the ice cream was beautiful ... he hadn't had an ice cream for two years!

c.f. readings for Sunday 7

1 Samuel 20-24: Jonathan again tried to help David make peace with Saul. But Saul was full of anger and just wanted to kill David. David then became a nomad, roaming from place to place, continually pursued by Saul's soldiers. David once had a chance to kill Saul but David refused to kill him. David said: "Saul is the anointed one of the Lord. It is wrong for me to hurt him." Even though Saul hated and hunted David, David respected and protected Saul
Dear God, when other people treat me unkindly, please help me to be kind to them, as David was kind to Saul

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Listen

Luke 6.27-38Jesus said to the people "Love your enemies. Do good to people who hate you. Pray for people who are unkind to you. Treat others as you would like them to treat you. Be compassionate as your heavenly Father is compassionate. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Grant pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and there will be gifts for you. The amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back".
Jesus, bless ....(name)....who was unkind to me

Reflection on the above readings: Unforgiveness is bad for our health. It plays a major part in the 80% of our sicknesses which have a psycho-somatic aspect. As the Chinese saying puts it: "All sickness starts in the heart"

Sat Feb 23

Yesterday morning I came away sad from the High Court after a very harsh lady judge gave a young man from Africa a very harsh sentence ... and would not give him any discount for his help for my campaign because something he said in one campaign letter contradicted something in his statement to police. Irrelevant ... his campaign letter is helping to stop people bringing drugs to HK. Judge must have been missing from university class in the semester when they studied logic.

But in the afternoon there was good news: a 75 year old UK man charged with drug trafficking was released from detention after his case was withdrawn in the High Court. Thank you Jesus! Man is currently in a local hospital with some health issues. Please God he will soon be able to return to UK. Last night I was able to give him a Nokia so he can keep in touch with family and friends. For a prison chaplain one of the happiest times is when someone is released from detention!

2 Samuel 16-24: When David was living in exile, some people helped him, some people insulted him. To insult his father and to claim the kingship Absalom publicly had sex with his father's concubines. Gradually David was able to re-build his army and his army defeated Absalom's soldiers in battle. In that battle, Absalom died and David mourned his death for a long time. Eventually David was able to become king of all Israel again.
Dear God, may Israel be a land of peace
My recording of this reading

Psalm 41: Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble. The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.
Lord, please help me to do more for the poor

Listen

1 John 2.3-6: We can be sure we know God only by keeping his commandments. Anyone who says "I know him" and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, refusing to admit the truth. We can be sure we are in God only if we are living the same kind of life as Christ lived
Jesus, please help me live like you, live for you

Listen

Mark 13.1-37: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the future: "On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed. But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun and moon will stop shining. Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you  should live a good life and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"
Jesus, please help me live and grow and die in your love ... and not be afraid of death

Fri Feb 22

I spent most of yesterday at Lai Chi Kok men's prison ... two days in a row at LCK, trying to catch up on a backlog of jobs. I met a number of "old friends" who are back again ... including one man I'll never forget: four years ago when he was at LCK he had a large growth over his left eye, which doctors had been unable to heal. But after some prayers the growth went away in a matter of days ... to the amazement of some 50 or so prisoners in the same day room. And history repeats itself: yesterday I also met a man from China who has a huge growth below his right ear. I prayed with him ... gave him a copy of Doctor Jesus to encourage his own prayer ... and now ask dear readers' prayers for him.

2 Samuel 14-15: When David had finished his time of mourning for Amnon, he allowed Absalom to return to Jerusalem. Only after two years did David agree to meet Absalom. He met him and pardoned him. But as time went on Absalom started to plot against David. Absalom  gathered enough supporters to overthrow David. David found out about the plot and fled from Jerusalem. David was very sad and prayed to God that someday he could return to Jerusalem.
Dear God, please help  people who are exiled from their homes

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

1 John 1.5-9: God is light. There is no darkness in him. If we say we are in union with God while we are living in darkness, we are lying, because we are not living the truth. If we say we have no sin in us, we are deceiving ourselves and refusing to admit the truth. But if we acknowledge our sins, God will forgive us and purify us from everything that is wrong.
Jesus, forgive my sins. Please help me avoid sin

Listen

Mark 12.41-44: Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor. Many rich people put in a lot of money. A poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus said to his disciples  "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she put in the only money she had".
Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: The first chapter of St John's Gospel and of his First Letter (above) imitate Genesis by talking about "the beginning". All three books quickly move from "the beginning" to the theme of "light", "light" being one of the most striking images of God ... who calls us to "walk in his light"

Thu Feb 21

Yesterday I spent nearly 8 hours at Lai Chi Kok men's prison ... my first visit for 2 months after trips to Malaysia and Australia + visits to women's prisons last week + High Court cases and meetings etc. Among the dozens of men I saw yesterday were 9 whose families I had met in Malaysia. We looked over photos of the meetings in Malaysia (which I had posted to them when I got back to HK) and checked information I had obtained in Malaysia to help them prepare for their court cases. A most worthwhile exercise in more ways than one ... thank you Jesus! And see   below!

2 Samuel 13: David had many wives and concubines. One of his sons, Amnon, fell in love with his step-sister Tamar and raped her. King David was very angry about this but did not punish Amnon, since he loved him. Amnon was his first-born son. But another son, Absalom, Tamar's full brother, hated Amnon and killed him. Absalom fled for three years to another land. All that time the king mourned for Amnon.
Dear Lord, please spare my family from conflict and strife

Recording

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the meaning of life

Recording

1 John 1.1-2: Something which has existed since the beginning, that we heard, that we saw with our own eyes, that we touched with our hands: the Word, who is life - this is our subject. That life was made visible. We saw it, and we are giving our testimony, telling you of the eternal life which was with the Father and has been made visible to us.
Jesus, Word-made-flesh, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life

Listen

Mark 12.38-40: Jesus told the people to beware of religious leaders who like to walk about in long robes, who like to be greeted obsequiously in the market places, who like to take the places of honor at prayer halls and banquets, who steal the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy prayers.
Jesus, help religious leaders to be good people

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Only on a few rare occasions in the Gospels does Jesus make a link between sin and sickness (as is Psalms 38-39 above). But given the fact that doctors estimate more than 75% of sicknesses have a psycho-somatic aspect, we can see a link between things like anger/unforgiveness and health (c.f. next Sunday's Gospel)

2 Samuel 12: The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David. Nathan said: "Why did you do what is displeasing to the Lord?" David replied: "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan said: "The Lord forgives you, but because of your sin, the child will die." After the child died, Bathsheba conceived another son by David, whom she named Solomon. The Lord specially blessed Solomon.
"Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness. In your compassion blot out my offence"
(David's prayer in Psalm 51)

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.

They have proved themselves, and will win the prize of eternal life which the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Mark 12.28-30: In Jerusalem a religious leader asked Jesus "Which is the most important commandment?" Jesus replied "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart. Jesus, please help me love you with all my heart and care for others as much as I care about myself
