Tues June 2
I spent most of yesterday working with Eddie Chan (St Peter's
Association Chairman) and other kind friends in the setting up of our new
MercyHK second hand shop at 191 Temple Street. After the electricians finish
their work tomorrow we hope to have the shop ready for business by the weekend
please God. Eddie is preparing a management team as well as a group of
volunteers and two pairs of homeless people to work in the shop. Formal contract
was signed yesterday on behalf of MercyHk for two years.

In this week after Pentecost, please join me in praying the Sequence of Pentecost each day

Joshua
9: After hearing that the
Israelites had captured Jericho and Ai,
other peoples of the region formed an alliance to fight against the Israelites.
But the people of Gibeon used another strategy:
they tricked the Israelites into thinking
they were not locals but had come from far away. So the Israelites made
a treaty with them. When the Israelites
realized they had been tricked,
they kept their side of the bargain and did not attack Gibeon. Instead the Gibeonites
became wood-cutters and water-carriers
in the service of the Israelites.
Dear
Lord, please help nations to make treaties instead of war
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord.
All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord
and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt,
who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things,
renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and
love,
slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth
so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West,
so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his
children,
the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels,
who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and
everything.
My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love
and compassion

Acts
2.22-36:
Peter said to the crowd "You know that
Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he
worked. This same Jesus has been raised from the dead
by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection. Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand.
He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy
Spirit on us. Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is
the Messiah and he is Lord".

Luke
10.1-9:
Jesus appointed 72 disciples to go ahead of
him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them "The harvest is rich, but
the laborers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to
his harvest. When you go into a town, cure those in it who
are sick, and say: 'The kingdom of God is very near to you'."
Jesus, please inspire more people to make the

Yesterday I had three groups of visitors (3 + 4 + 4) at my home:
the first a group supporting my anti-drug campaign, the second a group which has
been visiting 15 prisoners, the third which is supporting the Temple Street
project to help homeless people. The latter project has gone from 3 stalls near
187 Temple Street to a G/F shop at 191 Temple Street which hopefully will be
operating by the end of this week ... thanks to the help and hard work of many
kind people. Our MercyHK Temple Street
project financial report for May 1-29 is here.
God bless all kind donors! (.. money in bank is large, but so are our monthly
expenses (around $100,000) + setting up of shop expenses).

Joshua
8: Once again the
Israelites attacked the town of Ai,
this time with a special strategy: 5,000 men
went by night to the back of the town and hid themselves in the nearby hills.
In the morning Joshua and the rest of the people
marched towards the front of Ai. When the
king of Ai saw them coming,
he led his people out for battle. In chasing
the Israelites,
the king of Ai left his town undefended. Then the
5,000 Israelites attacked
Ai from the rear and set it on fire.
When the men of Ai looked back and saw their town on fire,
they realized they were caught in a trap. The
Israelites easily won the battle
and captured Ai.
Dear Lord, please
give leaders the courage of Joshua

Psalm
102: O Lord, listen to my
prayer in my distress.
Do not hide your face from me. For my days are
vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my
bread.
My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes
revile me.
Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will
endure for ever.
You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the
groans of the prisoners
and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do
not take me away before my time has come,
you whose days last from age to age.

Acts
2.11-18: When people heard the apostles' group
speaking in many different languages, some said the apostles were drunk. Peter stood up with the Eleven and said to the
crowd:
These people are not drunk. It's only 9am .... too early to drink.
What is happening is what God said through the prophet Joel: 'I, the Lord, will pour out my spirit on all
peoples. They will prophesy and see visions. I will pour out my spirit on
everyone'

9.51-58: When the time came for Jesus to finish his

go". Jesus replied "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but

Wishing all dear readers a Happy Pentecost!

courage to world leaders to deal with Covid-19

attended by more than 50 loyal members of the wider Oblate family who used
umbrellas in the steady rain. In the afternoon and evening I helped with the
shifting of items from the 3 MercyHK stall trolleys in Temple Street to our new
home, No. 91 Temple Street which

c.f. Readings for Pentecost

Acts
2.1-4: About ten days after
Jesus' ascension to heaven, was the Feast of Pentecost. Jesus'
12 apostles, his mother, several other women, and his brothers were together in
one room. Suddenly
they heard what sounded like a powerful wind. Tongues of fire appeared and came
to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and began to speak foreign languages

Psalm 104: Bless
the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You
make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make
springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the
field. You make grass grow for the cattle, and plants to provide food for
people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts, and oil to make our faces
shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its
setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The
earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things,
great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You
send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I
will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.

Come Holy Spirit!
A
simple little song to the Holy Spirit - to the tune of "The
Stabat Mater" - listen to it here:
Flowing
from the heart of Jesus,
Living River, Holy Spirit,
Fill our hearts and flow through us
-based on today's Gospel, below!

Yesterday morning there were 4 cases at the High Court building
which I have been following. I found out about one of the cases only the night
before when checking the court lists .... after which I prepared a support
letter (for a man from Africa on a drug trafficking charge) .... then took it to
court yesterday morning and gave it to man's lawyer ... before going to another
place for a meeting ....during which I kept asking the Holy Spirit to bless all
4 cases. Last night I also attended the funeral Mass for 96 year old Fr John
Chai O.M.I. ... led by Cardinal John Tong.
The one-month trial of MercyHK stalls at Temple Street Market is
coming to an end .... and our core group is now looking at Plan B: renting a G/Fshop
in Temple Street instead of stalls .... because ....we have run into some
licensing problems ... and weather problems... and we have confirmed our
pre-trial thinking that our potential buyer group is not tourists (there aren't
any!) or better-off local people but poorer local poorer people (residents from
Sub-Continent, domestic helpers etc). ..who can be better served from a shop
open say 9am to 9pm than a stall open 2pm to 7pm .... and a shop would not have
all the difficulties of setting up and packing away each day etc. And ... a shop
would make it easier to store the many, many items we receive from kind donors
each day (our stall trolleys just can't cope!).
40 million Americans have lost their jobs

Joel
1-4: My country has
been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth, and

"Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and
rescue you. I
will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Everyone will prophesy and see visions. You
will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."

Romans
8.14-21: Everyone
moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's
language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since
we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his
suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be
compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation
looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality.
Holy Spirit, please help us pray!

John
7.37-39: During the
Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly in the Temple
"If anyone is thirsty, come to me. Anyone who believes in me, come and
drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of
living water". Jesus
was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to
receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been
glorified.

To
prepare for
Pentecostst (May
31) lelet's
reflect on the Holy Spirit:
The dove: At
the end of the flood, whose symbolism refers to Baptism, a dove released
by Noah returns with a fresh olive-tree branch in its beak as a sign that the
earth was again habitable. When
Jesus comes up from the water of his baptism, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove,
comes down upon him and remains with him. The Spirit comes down and remains in
the purified hearts of the baptized. In
some churches, the Eucharist is reserved in a metal receptacle in the form of a dove (columbarium)
suspended above the altar. Christian
iconography traditionally uses a dove to
suggest the Spirit. - CCC

often pray each day: Come
Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Joshua 7: The Lord had told the
Israelites not to keep anything for themselves
when they captured Jericho. But one man disobeyed
the Lord
and secretly kept some of the spoils. As a result of that
man's disobedience,
the Israelites were defeated in battle when they attacked the town of
Ai. The disobedient
man's identity was found by drawing of the lot: of the 12 tribes, one was chosen, the tribe of
Judah; of the tribe of Judah, one clan was chosen, that of Zerah; of the families of Zerah, one was chosen, that of Zabdi;
of the men of Zabdi, one was chosen, Achan. Achan admitted his
guilt.
He and his whole family were then stoned to death
and a great cairn built over them.
All of Achan's possessions were burnt.

I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud

1.15-26:
During these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples:
"As you know, Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now
choose someone to take Judas' place, someone who has been with us since
the time when John was baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and Matthias.
After prayer was offered, Matthias was
chosen. He was listed as one of the
12 apostles
Jesus, please protect your church from

Luke
9.28-36: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James
and John
up a high mountain to pray.
On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed.
His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared
and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for
us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its
shadow.
From the cloud came a voice:
"This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him".
When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his
normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God,
how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

To
prepare for Pentecost (May 31) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit:
The
finger is
another symbol of the Holy Spirit. It was by the
finger of God that Jesus cast
out demons. If God's law was written on tablets of stone "by the
finger of God," then the "letter from
Christ" entrusted to the care of the apostles, is written "with the
Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human
hearts." The hymn Veni Creator
Spiritus invokes the Holy Spirit as " the finger of
the Father's right hand." - CCC

Temple Street. One of those days when not everything went so well ... but
sometimes "not so well" days if offered up in prayer can bring a
blessing to others. And ... today is shaping up as an ominous one for HK on a
number of fronts. Let's offer up our little trials and difficulties for the
peace of HK. I am due to be at a prison all day today - 9am to 6pm - unable to
answer phone, W/App, email, texts

To
prepare for Pentecost (May 31) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit - today: The
Hand
The hand is
another symbol of the Holy Spirit. Jesus heals the sick and blesses little
children by laying hands on
them. In his name the apostles will do the same. It is by the Apostles'
imposition of hands that
the Holy Spirit is given. The
Church has kept this sign of the all-powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit by
having the priest at Mass extend his hands over
the bread and wine as he says "Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to
make them holy" CCC
699
In
this week before Pentecost, let's
often pray each day: Come
Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Book Blog:
4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Joshua 5: The kings of the
Jordan area
heard that the Lord had
dried up the Jordan's waters
to let the Israelites cross over.
The kings became very afraid of the Israelites. At Gilgal near the
Jordan
the Lord instructed Joshua
that all un-circumcised men should be circumcised. It was at Gilgal that
the Israelites kept the Passover Feast
and tasted the produce of the land.
As soon as the Israelites tasted the produce of the land,
the manna stopped falling.
Dear
God, thank you for all you did for the Israelites
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
99: The Lord is king. He is great in
Sion.
His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and
Samuel.
They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name.
He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples
know and love you
Listen

Acts
1.6-11: On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus
said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the
world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they
watched.
A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said
"Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the
same way as you have seen him leave".
Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I
think and speak and live
Listen
Luke
9.18-21: One day Jesus asked his disciples
"Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some people say
you are one of the famous prophets come back to life". Jesus then asked them
"And what about you. Who do you say I am?"
Peter answered
"You are the Anointed One of God"
Jesus, please help more and more people know
you and love you
