Tues June 2

I spent most of yesterday working with Eddie Chan (St Peter's Association Chairman) and other kind friends in the setting up of our new MercyHK second hand shop at 191 Temple Street. After the electricians finish their work tomorrow we hope to have the shop ready for business by the weekend please God. Eddie is preparing a management team as well as a group of volunteers and two pairs of homeless people to work in the shop. Formal contract was signed yesterday on behalf of MercyHk for two years.

In this week after Pentecost, please join me in praying the Sequence of Pentecost each day

Joshua 9: After hearing that the Israelites had captured Jericho and Ai, other peoples of the region formed an alliance to fight against the Israelites. But the people of Gibeon used another strategy: they tricked the Israelites into thinking they were not locals but had come from far away. So the Israelites made a treaty with them. When the Israelites realized they had been tricked, they kept their side of the bargain and did not attack Gibeon. Instead the Gibeonites became wood-cutters and water-carriers in the service of the Israelites.
Dear Lord, please help nations to make treaties instead of war

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Listen

Acts 2.22-36: Peter said to the crowd "You know that Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he worked. This same Jesus has been raised from the dead by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection. Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand. He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy Spirit on us. Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is the Messiah and he is Lord".
Jesus, Messiah Lord, please pour your Holy Spirit into my heart

Listen

Luke 10.1-9: Jesus appointed 72 disciples to go ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them "The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest. When you go into a town, cure those in it who are sick, and say:  'The kingdom of God is very near to you'."
Jesus, please inspire more people to make the spreading of the Good News their life's work

The steel shutter of our 191 Temple Street shop is a bit special .... one person can open the shutter, but two are needed to lock it: one to stand on the far right of its bottom section while the other turns the key in the middle of the shutter. Impossible for one person to do both!

Mon June 1

Yesterday I had three groups of visitors (3 + 4 + 4) at my home: the first a group supporting my anti-drug campaign, the second a group which has been visiting 15 prisoners, the third which is supporting the Temple Street project to help homeless people. The latter project has gone from 3 stalls near 187 Temple Street to a G/F shop at 191 Temple Street which hopefully will be operating by the end of this week ... thanks to the help and hard work of many kind people. Our MercyHK Temple Street project financial report for May 1-29 is here. God bless all kind donors! (.. money in bank is large, but so are our monthly expenses (around $100,000) + setting up of shop expenses).

Joshua 8: Once again the Israelites attacked the town of Ai, this time with a special strategy: 5,000 men went by night to the back of the town and hid themselves in the nearby hills. In the morning Joshua and the rest of the people marched towards the front of Ai. When the king of Ai saw them coming,  he led his people out for battle. In chasing the Israelites, the king of Ai left his town undefended. Then the 5,000 Israelites attacked Ai from the rear and set it on fire. When the men of Ai looked back and saw their town on fire, they realized they were caught in a trap. The Israelites easily won the battle and captured Ai.
Dear Lord, please give leaders the courage of Joshua

My recording of this reading

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Listen

Acts 2.11-18: When  people heard the apostles' group speaking in many different languages, some said the apostles were drunk. Peter stood up with the Eleven and said to the crowd: These people are not drunk. It's only 9am .... too early to drink. What is happening is what God said through the prophet Joel: 'I, the Lord, will pour out my spirit on all peoples. They will prophesy and see visions. I will pour out my spirit on everyone'
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on all peoples, all nations

Listen

Luke 9.51-58: When the time came for Jesus to finish his life on earth, he resolutely took the road to Jerusalem. As Jesus and his disciples traveled along, they met a man who said to him "I will follow you wherever you go". Jesus replied "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but I have nowhere to lay my head"
Jesus, give me  courage to do what I should do

Wishing all dear readers a Happy Pentecost!

COME HOLY SPIRIT!  FALL AFRESH ON OUR WORLD!

Especially today let's ask the Holy Spirit to give wisdom and courage to world leaders to deal with Covid-19

Yesterday morning I attended the funeral Mass of 96 year old Fr John Chai O.M.I., followed by burial at Cheung Sha Wan cemetery ... attended by more than 50 loyal members of the wider Oblate family who used umbrellas in the steady rain. In the afternoon and evening I helped with the shifting of items from the 3 MercyHK stall trolleys in Temple Street to our new home, No. 91 Temple Street which Please God will be open early next week (.. background: see yesterday's menu, below)

c.f. Readings for Pentecost

Acts 2.1-4: About ten days after Jesus' ascension to heaven, was the Feast of Pentecost. Jesus' 12 apostles, his mother, several other women, and his brothers were together in one room. Suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind. Tongues of fire appeared and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak foreign languages
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on me. Fall afresh on our world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle, and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts, and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food. You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Lord, send forth your Holy Spirit and renew the face of the earth

1 Corinthians 12.4-10: The Holy Spirit gives us many different gifts: Some people have the gift of wise preaching. Some people have the gift of an extra strong faith. Some people have the gift of healing sick people. Some people have other gifts like the power of miracles, prophecy, recognizing spirits, and the ability to speak in tongues.
Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life. Please give me the gift of (..name...)

John 15-16: Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Advocate comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you to the complete truth. He will glorify me, since all he tells you will be taken from what is mine. Everything the Father has is mine; that is why I said: All he tells you will be taken from what is mine"
O Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth, fall afresh on our world!

 The Day of Pentecost (good!)

Hudson Taylor: "Since the days of Pentecost, has the whole church ever put aside every other work and waited upon Him for ten days, that the Spirit's power might be manifested? We give too much attention to method and machinery and resources, and too little to the source of power."

Come Holy Spirit!

A simple little song to the Holy Spirit - to the tune of "The Stabat Mater" - listen to it here
Flowing from the heart of Jesus,
Living River, Holy Spirit,
Fill our hearts and flow through us

-based on today's Gospel, below!

Yesterday morning there were 4 cases at the High Court building which I have been following. I found out about one of the cases only the night before when checking the court lists .... after which I prepared a support letter (for a man from Africa on a drug trafficking charge) .... then took it to court yesterday morning and gave it to man's lawyer ... before going to another place for a meeting ....during which I kept asking the Holy Spirit to bless all 4 cases. Last night I also attended the funeral Mass for 96 year old Fr John Chai O.M.I. ... led by Cardinal John Tong.

The one-month trial of MercyHK stalls at Temple Street Market is coming to an end .... and our core group is now looking at Plan B: renting a G/Fshop in Temple Street instead of stalls .... because ....we have run into some licensing problems ... and weather problems... and we have confirmed our pre-trial thinking that our potential buyer group is not tourists (there aren't any!) or better-off local people but poorer local poorer people (residents from Sub-Continent, domestic helpers etc). ..who can be better served from a shop open say 9am to 9pm than a stall open 2pm to 7pm .... and a shop would not have all the difficulties of setting up and packing away each day etc. And ... a shop would make it easier to store the many, many items we receive from kind donors each day (our stall trolleys just can't cope!).

c.f. readings for Vigil of Pentecost

Joel 1-4: My country has been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth, and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help. "Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Everyone will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."
Lord, pour out your Holy Spirit on all nations

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. Romans 8.14-21: Everyone moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality.
Holy Spirit, please help us pray!

John 7.37-39: During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly  in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty, come to me. Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Holy Spirit, flowing from the heart of Jesus, please increase your influence in my life

Today is the feast day of Blessed Joseph Gerard O.M.I. who died in Southern Africa on this day in 1914. In January 2017 I had the privilege of visiting his grave in Lesotho.  A video life of Blessed Joseph

To prepare for Pentecostst (May 31) lelet's reflect on the Holy Spirit:
The dove: At the end of the flood, whose symbolism refers to Baptism, a dove released by Noah returns with a fresh olive-tree branch in its beak as a sign that the earth was again habitable.
When Jesus comes up from the water of his baptism, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, comes down upon him and remains with him. The Spirit comes down and remains in the purified hearts of the baptized. In some churches, the Eucharist is reserved in a metal receptacle in the form of a dove (columbarium) suspended above the altar. Christian iconography traditionally uses a dove to suggest the Spirit.  CCC 701

In this week before Pentecost, let's often pray each day:
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Joshua 7: The Lord had told the Israelites not to keep anything for themselves when they captured Jericho. But one man disobeyed the Lord and secretly kept some of the spoils. As a result of that man's disobedience, the Israelites were defeated in battle when they attacked the town of Ai. The disobedient man's  identity was found by drawing of the lot: of the 12 tribes, one was chosen, the tribe of Judah; of the tribe of Judah, one clan was chosen, that of Zerah; of the families of Zerah, one was chosen, that of Zabdi; of the men of Zabdi, one was chosen, Achan. Achan admitted his guilt. He and his whole family were then stoned to death and a great cairn built over them. All of Achan's possessions were burnt.
Dear Lord, please don't let me disobey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 101: My song is of mercy and justice. I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless heart. I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud looks, these will not be my friends. People who are good and do good, these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to avoid bad company

Acts 1.15-26: During these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples: "As you know, Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now choose someone to take Judas' place, someone who has been with us since the time when John was baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and Matthias. After prayer was offered, Matthias was chosen. He was listed as one of the 12 apostles
Jesus, please protect your church from betrayal and disloyalty

Listen

Luke 9.28-36: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray. On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed. His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him". When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

Thu May 28

I spent most of yesterday at Tai Lam women's prison ... as usual feeling sorry for so many women in detention. But last night I realised one was missing when I read this: Case dropped against relative of police officer

As the protests re-start, I invite protesters to reflect on this: Protest is a right. Vandalism is a wrong

To prepare for Pentecost (May 31) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit:
The finger is another symbol of the Holy Spirit.  It was by the finger of God that Jesus cast out demons. If God's law was written on tablets of stone "by the finger of God," then the "letter from Christ" entrusted to the care of the apostles, is written "with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts." The hymn Veni Creator Spiritus invokes the Holy Spirit as " the finger of the Father's right hand."  - CCC 700

In this week before Pentecost, let's often pray each day:
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Joshua 6The Lord said to Joshua: "I am delivering Jericho and its king into your hands. Get your soldiers to march around Jericho. Do this for 6 days, marching with the Sacred Chest with 7 trumpets in front of it. On the 7th day, march around the city 7 times, and then let the whole people give a mighty war cry." The soldiers and people did this, and when the war cry was made,
the walls of Jericho fell down. The Israelites then entered the town and captured it. They spared the lives of Rahab the prostitute and her family

Dear Lord, long ago you caused the walls of Jericho to fall. Please in our day cause walls of prejudice and corruption to fall

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. Acts 1.12-14: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers
Jesus, your apostles' group spent special time in prayer preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit. I now ask them in heaven to pray that the Holy Spirit will increase his influence in my life

Luke 9.22-25: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he would suffer, die and rise from the dead. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"

Wed May 27

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the sentencing of a young Malaysian man on a drug trafficking charge. Then home for a long stretch of office work. Then a number of jobs connected with the MercyHK stalls in Temple Street. One of those days when not everything went so well ... but sometimes "not so well" days if offered up in prayer can bring a blessing to others. And ... today is shaping up as an ominous one for HK on a number of fronts. Let's offer up our little trials and difficulties for the peace of HK. I am due to be at a prison all day today - 9am to 6pm - unable to answer phone, W/App, email, texts

To prepare for Pentecost (May 31) let's reflect on the Holy Spirit - today: The Hand
The hand
is another symbol of the Holy Spirit. Jesus heals the sick and blesses little children by laying hands on them. In his name the apostles will do the same. It is by the Apostles' imposition of hands that the Holy Spirit is given.
The Church has kept this sign of the all-powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit by having the priest at Mass extend his hands over the bread and wine as he says "Let your Spirit come upon these gifts to make them holy"
   CCC 699
In this week before Pentecost, let's often pray each day: Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Joshua 5:  The kings of the Jordan area heard that the Lord had dried up the Jordan's waters to let the Israelites cross over. The kings became very afraid of the Israelites. At Gilgal near the Jordan the Lord instructed Joshua that all un-circumcised men should be circumcised. It was at Gilgal that the Israelites kept the Passover Feast and tasted the produce of the land. As soon as the Israelites tasted the produce of the land, the manna stopped falling.
Dear God, thank you for all you did for the Israelites

My recording of this reading

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Listen

Acts 1.6-11: On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they watched.
A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave".

Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I think and speak and live

Listen

Luke 9.18-21: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets come back to life". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Anointed One of God"
Jesus, please help more and more people know you and love you
