Readings are from Simple Bible

Numbers 5: Moses reminded the people of the Ten Commandments:
1: I am the Lord your God. Do not worship anyone or anything else.
2: Use my name with respect. Do not insult my name.
3: Make the Sabbath a holy day each week.
4: Honor your father and your mother.
 5: Do not kill.
 6: Do not commit adultery.
 7: Do not steal.
8: Do not tell lies about other people.
9: Do not lust after someone else's wife.
10: Do not desire what belongs to someone else.

Dear God, please help us to put these commandments into practice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry. He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.
Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Listen

Romans 6.3-11: When we were baptized, two things happened: 1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died. 2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life. This dying and rising means we have died to sin, and risen to a new life. We died to an old life, and  we came back to a new life. We have been re-born, born again
Jesus, please help me leave my old life behind. Help me live a new life with you
Listen

John 4.34-36: Jesus said to his disciples "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work. Look around, look at the fields. They are ready for harvest".
Jesus, please encourage more people to be Gospel workers, harvesting souls for eternal life

Deuteronomy 2-4: Moses continued his talk to the Israelites: "God has been with us these 40 years, watching over us and providing for us. God gave us many victories and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies. So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen. Make sure to tell these things to your children's children. God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people. If you seek God with all your heart and soul you will find him. Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below, he and no other. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever."
Lord, please help me to seek you with all my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I have on earth. Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better
Lord, help us better understand the meaning of life

Listen

Romans 5.12-21Through one man, Adam, the virus of sin entered the world, and sin infected everyone with death. Through one man, Jesus, the divine anti-virus of grace entered the world, and brought the gift of eternal life to everyone who allows it to be installed in their heart. The divine anti-virus of grace is more powerful than any sin virus
Jesus, please download and install in my heart your anti-virus program of grace

John 4.1-14: Jesus visited a Samaritan town. Near a well there, Jesus said to a Samaritan woman "Give me a drink". He also said to her  "If you drink water from this well, you will get thirsty again. But if you drink the water that I shall give, you will never be thirsty again.
The water that I shall give will turn into a spring of eternal life inside you"

Jesus, please give me a drink of your eternal life water - which is your Holy Spirit

Sun Oct 10

Because of typhoon "Lionrock", my morning and evening Masses at St Paul's Parish in Yau Ma Tei were cancelled yesterday. The usual Sat afternoon prayer meeting for the sick was able to be held - by zoom! Hopefully by the time you are reading this, typhoon signal No. 8 will have been replaced by No. 3 and even maybe by No. 1.

Today is the 19th World Day Against the Death Penalty. A good day to pray for Wu Chi Man:
Wu Chi Man, a 50 year old HK man with a history of mental illness, is due to be executed in Shenzhen at the end of this month on a charge of drug trafficking. His aged parents have been told they can say goodbye to him on Oct 28 .... so they are now in Shenzhen for quarantine before a farewell visit to their son. Parents had asked HK government for help and govt sent info to China, but no success. Media is last resort. Parents have agreed to media publicity in a final effort to get HK govt to try effectively to stop the execution. JESUS, PLEASE HELP WU CHI MAN!

c.f. readings for Sunday 28

Wisdom 6-7: Listen, rulers of the nations, govern with justice, for you will be judged by the Lord. Rulers, if you want to govern successfully, seek Wisdom and she will guide your decisions. A wise ruler is a blessing for his people. The more wise people there are, the better our world will be. When I, Solomon, became a ruler, I prayed for Wisdom. I prayed, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. In Wisdom's company, all good things came to me.
Lord, please give me the gift of Wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

 Listen

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne of grace. He will give us grace when we are in need of help
Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

 Listen

Mark 10.17-27: A young man asked Jesus "Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill; do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
Jesus, please don't let riches endanger my eternal life

Sat Oct 9

I had much to give thanks for last night! Despite heavy rain with typhoon signal 3, the usual Friday 12.30 lunch at the Dr Jesus Centre for mothers who work on Temple Street was attended by 8 people. During the meal came the news that the Black Rain Signal had changed back to Red. Black was up for about an hour and meant all activities in afternoon needed to be cancelled. So a number of us asked Jesus to look after Mr Black .... and sure enough he didn't last long ....which meant our usual afternoon gathering for homeless people could go ahead at the Dr Jesus Centre ....with special guest Bishop Joseph Ha ... who inspired everyone with his Bible sharing, humour and encouraging reflections. Bishop's sharing will hopefully be available on YouTube next week, with link put on this menu.
Not forgetting other special guests: Camay and Yuki! Camay gave a moving testimony about her courageous fight to recover from stage four lung cancer.

Deuteronomy 1: After wandering in the desert for 40 years, the Israelites reached the land of Canaan. Moses then assembled the people and recalled all that had happened over the past 40 years: "When God first told us to take this land, I said to you: Do not be afraid. God goes ahead of you and will be fighting on your side, as he did in Egypt. I also said how God carried you, as a man carries his child, all along the road you travelled to this place. But you did not trust God and God closed the door to Canaan for 40 years,
causing us to wander in the desert until now
."

Dear God, please help me to trust you a bit more

My recording of this reading

Psalms 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you, you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you, confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

Listen

Romans 5.1-5: By faith and through Jesus we can live in the friendship of God. We look forward to heaven and an end to all suffering. In the meantime our suffering teaches us patience. Patience produces perseverance. Perseverance produces hope. This hope is not imaginary. It's real, since the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us
Jesus, through your Holy Spirit, please give me more hope

Listen

John 3.25-36: Some of John the Baptist's disciples told John that many of his disciples were leaving him and following Jesus. John replied "I am not the Christ. I am the one who was sent to prepare his way. The bride is only for the bridegroom. But the bridegroom's friend is happy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. This is the happiness  I now feel. He must become more and more important.
I must become less and less important
. Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life. But anyone who refuses to believe in the Son will not have eternal life"

Jesus, be more and more important in my life

Numbers 34-35: God gave the land of Canaan to the Israelites and Moses allocated a section of the land to the eleven tribes. The tribe of Levi received some towns and pasture land from each of the eleven tribes. Cities of refuge were established, where people could find safety if they had accidentally caused someone's death and the dead person's relatives wanted to take revenge. In cases of homicide, more than one witness was required to convict someone of murder. A final law: the inheritance of each tribe was not to be transferred to another tribe
Dear God, please bless my family with a sense of history and togetherness

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34:
I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good.
They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.

Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Listen

Romans 4.1-25: Remember our ancestor Abraham. He put his faith in God, and this was how he became holy. We too must put our faith in God the Father who raised Jesus from the dead to make us holy
Jesus, please increase my faith. Help me believe like Abraham

Listen

John 3.13-17: Jesus said to the religious leader: "The Son of Man must be lifted up on a cross, as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". God loved the world so much, that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: May the example of Abraham give us hope and courage in our troubled world ... to remember that life is all about God's love ..... God's love is the reason we are alive!

c.f. readings for Feast of the Rosary

Genesis 3: A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you."
God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came, and to dust you will return." The first man's name was
Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you
My recording of this reading

Luke 1.46: My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.  He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Recording

Acts 1.12: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers.
Recording

Luke 1.26: In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her

Reflection on the above readings:

Many religions use beads to help pray. Beads help us to remember what we're doing. Beads help us to focus on praying ... even as we ride a bus or walk along the street. My own custom is to pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary at the start of each decade of the Rosary, and then for the 9 other beads to use words from the Bible readings of the day. So for today, the first decade might use a bead or two for each of these words: "the snake tempted them", "they disobeyed God", "Someday a member of the human race will defeat you", "from dust you came, to dust you will return", the first people were named "man" and "woman". Then the Glory be to the Father, then the "O my Jesus" prayer. Then to the next decade

Numbers 30-33:  The Israelites waged war against the Midianites and claimed their land and the land of Canaan. To the sons of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh were given the land of Sihon, king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan. The land of Canaan was divided by lot among the Israelite clans

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love.
