Readings are from Simple Bible

Joshua 4: After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, Joshua selected 12 men, one from each tribe, and told them to get 12 stones from the middle of the Jordan. The 12 stones were set up at Gilgal, east of Jericho, as a reminder of how God had helped the Israelites cross the river. When children in the future asked "What do these stones mean?" parents were to answer:
"The waters of the Jordan separated and stopped flowing when the Lord's Sacred Chest entered the river. These 12 stones are a permanent reminder of this." As soon as the Israelites had finished crossing the Jordan, its waters immediately started flowing again.

Dear Lord, please don't let me ever forget the many times you have helped me cross "Jordan" rivers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Listen

1 Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my faith in you

Listen

John 10.11-14: Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. A hired man, since he has no real concern for the sheep, abandons them and runs away if he sees a wolf coming. I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep, and my own sheep know me"
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help me to be a good sheep, and a good shepherd

Joshua 3: Instructed by the Lord, Joshua told the people to go to the bank of the Jordan River. He told the priests carrying the Sacred Chest to stand in the river on the edge of the water. As soon as the feet of the priests touched the water, the river stopped flowing. The people then went across the dry river bed towards Jericho.
Dear God, please help me to cross rivers of difficulty, doubt, conflict etc

My recording of this reading

Psalm 86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer for I am poor and needy. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O Lord, you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart
for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant and save your handmaid's son.

Dear Lord, thank you for all your love

Listen

1 Corinthians 1.1-10: I, Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle, send greetings to the church of God in Corinth. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. I never stop thanking God for all the graces you have received through Jesus Christ. The witness to Christ has been strong among you. God shares with us the life of his Son, Jesus. God helps us to be faithful as followers of Jesus. I appeal to you to be united in belief and practice. Put an end to the differences between you
Jesus, Son of God, thank you for all the graces I have received

Listen

John 10.1-10: Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the gate of the sheepfold. If anyone enters the sheepfold by some other means than the gate, that person is a thief. The person who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the flock. The sheep hear his voice as he calls each one by name and leads them out of the sheepfold. When he has brought them out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that people may have life, not just now but for ever".
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help more and more people hear your voice and follow you

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The biggest problem in our troubled world is not poverty or climate change or Covid-19. The biggest problem is a lack of good leaders ... leaders who care for the sheep rather than their own power/prestige/re-election

c.f. readings for Sunday 32

1 Kings 17: When Ahab was king of Israel, in the 9th century B.C., Elijah was a prophet of the Lord. Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain for a long time because the people were following the cult of Baal. Elijah did miracles in the name of the Lord: he blessed a poor widow's food to make it increase, and he brought back to life a young boy who had died.
Dear God, please bless our prayers as you blessed the prayers of Elijah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Hebrews 8-9: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart and protect me

 Listen

Mark 12.41-44: Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor. Many rich people put in a lot of money. A poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus said to his disciples  "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she put in the only money she had"
Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

Joshua 2: Joshua sent two men as spies to explore the Jericho area. In Jericho they went to the house of Rahab the prostitute. The king of Jericho was told about this and he sent men to capture the two Israelites. But Rahab hid the men and told the king that they had already gone. Rahab said to the men in their hiding place on her roof: "I know that the Lord has given you this land. My people are afraid of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the sea for your crossing out of Egypt. We have heard how you defeated the 2 kings Sihon and Og. Since I have shown you kindness I now ask you to show kindness to my family and spare their lives when you attack this city." The men agreed and told Rahab to tie a scarlet cord to her window so the Israelites would know her family were inside. Rahab helped the men go down from the window by a rope. The men stayed in the nearby hills for 3 days until it was safe to leave. The men returned to Joshua and told how the people of Jericho were already trembling at the thought of an Israelite attack.
Lord, please bless all women and girls caught up in prostitution

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met.
Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps

Lord, please give more peace to our world

John 9.1-33: Once when Jesus was walking along the road, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud with the spittle. He put the mud on the man's eyes, and said "Go and wash in the Siloam Pool". The blind man went and washed, and came away able to see. When the blind man heard people criticize Jesus, he said "Ever since the world began, it has never been recorded that someone opened the eyes of a man born blind. This man must be from God".

Joshua 1: God said to Joshua: "I will be with you, as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or abandon you. Be strong and stand firm and be careful to keep all the Law which my servant Moses laid on you. Never swerve from this to right or left, and then you will be happy in all you do. Have the book of this Law always on your lips. Meditate on it day and night, so that you may carefully keep everything that is written in it. Be fearless, be confident, for wherever you go I the Lord your God am with you." Then Joshua said to the people: "Get ready, for in 3 days you will cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land  which God is giving to you."
Dear God, thank you for the courage and confidence that you give us

My recording of this reading

Psalm 84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord. My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your temple guests. They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple. And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life, you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

Romans 15.15-33: The reason I have written to you is to encourage you in your faith.  This is my job from God. He has appointed me as a priest of Jesus Christ. I must do all I can to spread the Good News. I hope to see you on my way to Spain.
Please pray for me that I may be protected from people who want to eliminate me.

John 8 (42, 46, 56 -58)Jesus said to the people "If God were your father, you would love me, since I have come from God and I speak the truth. You avoid the truth, because your father is the father of lies, the Devil. Abraham rejoiced at the thought of my coming. He saw it in the future and was glad". The people said "You are not yet 50 years old. How could you have seen Abraham?" Jesus replied "I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I Am". The people then picked up stones to throw at Jesus for claiming to be God. But Jesus safely left the Temple
Jesus, you who existed as God the Son from all eternity, please increase my love for the truth, and help me avoid lies

Deuteronomy 33-34Before Moses died, he blessed the twelve tribes of Israel. Moses then went up Mount Nebo, opposite Jericho,
where the Lord showed him the whole land that the Israelites would possess. Moses was buried in the land of Moab. After the people mourned Moses for 30 days, Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, since Moses had laid his hands on him. From that time there has never been a prophet like Moses, the man who knew the Lord face to face

Deuteronomy 32: The Song of Moses: Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words on my lips. May my teaching fall like the rain, my speech descend like the dew, like rain drops on the young green, like showers falling on the grass. For I shall praise the name of the Lord. O give glory to this God of ours! The Rock - his deeds are perfect, and all his ways are just, a faithful God, without deceit, a God who is right and just.
Those whom he begot unblemished have become crooked, false, perverse. Is it thus you repay the Lord, O senseless and foolish people? Is he not your father who created you, he who made you, on whom you depend? Remember the days of old, consider the years that are past; ask you father and he will show you, ask your elders and they will tell you. When the Most High gave the nations their heritage and disposed men according to his plan, in fixing the boundaries of the nations he thought first of Israel's sons. For Israel was the Lord's possession, Jacob the one he had chosen. God found him in a wilderness, in fearful, desolate wastes; he surrounded him, he lifted him up, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that watches its nest, that hovers over its young, so he spread his wings; he took him, placed him on his outstretched wings. The Lord alone was his guide and no other god was with him.

Dear Lord, thank you for life and all your love and care

Psalm 81: Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob. Listen to the voice of the Lord: "I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. The kingdom of God is about friendship with God, and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Do whatever you can to help other people become stronger Christians

John 8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you say?"  They said this to test him, looking for something to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied. "Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin any more".
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The leaders' sins?  "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could claim innocence?"
(Psalm 130)

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible
c.f. Readings for All Souls Day

Isaiah 25:

On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines.
On this mountain he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, please increase my remembering, my longing and my hope

Recording

Philippians 3.20-41: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord.
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

Recording

Mark 16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon. Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone, but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he will see them in Galilee"
Jesus, when life seems hopeless, like a dead body in a tomb, please help us remember how you rose from the dead .... and you can help us "rise" from any "hopeless" situation

Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:
One thing that nearly all cultures share: an instinct to remember the dead, to pray for the dead, to honor the dead.
