Tues Nov 23

Yesterday morning I went to my usual local doctor for annual check-up and for annual flu shot. Then to nearby Print Shop to order 15th (!) printing of Dr Jesus (Chinese edition). Then to bank to make a deposit to shop in Sham Shui Po for more small crosses to which homeless people then add a string (.. a little part-time work ...) so that crosses can be worn around neck ... for distribution to various groups as a protection against Covid-19.

Judges 4: After Ehud died, the Israelites again began to stray from the Lord and therefore again lost their freedom and peace. The Lord then used Deborah, who was a judge and prophetess, to rescue the people. Deborah instructed Barak son of Abinoam to go and do battle with Sisera, the people's oppressor. Barak said he would go only if Deborah went with him. She agreed but then said that his hesitation would cause the Lord to give battle victory to a woman, not Barak. When Barak's forces routed those of Sisera, Sisera fled and took refuge in the tent of Jael, wife of Heber. As Sisera slept from exhaustion, Jael drove a tent peg into his head and he died. So once again the Lord had rescued the Israelites.
Dear God, please give me more courage in the battle of life, (and please protect and bless
Barack Obama!)
My recording of this reading

Psalm 99: The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.
Lord, may all peoples know and love you

Listen

1 Corinthians 15.9-11: I am the least of the apostles. In fact, since I persecuted the Church of God, I hardly deserve the name apostle. But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless. On the contrary, I, or rather the grace of God in my heart, have worked harder than any of the others, preaching the same message that they preach
Jesus, may your grace in me be more fruitful

Listen

John 14.8-21: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "To have seen me, is to have seen the Father. I am in the Father, and the Father is in me. Whatever you ask for in my name, I will do it, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you love me, you will keep my commandments. I will ask the Father and he will give you another Friend to be always with you. This Friend is the Spirit of Truth who will be living in your heart. If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home in his heart"
Father, Jesus, Spirit of Truth - three Persons, one God  - thank you for living in my heart

Reflection on the above readings: Paul (I Cor) speaks about "the grace of God in my heart".... which can be understood as the presence of the Trinity in our hearts (Gospel)

Mon Nov 22

After Mass at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei yesterday morning, I attended a meeting with someone whose mother recently went home to Heaven. Then I joined a Parish Basic Group for their monthly lunch meeting. Then I met with 2 groups - one from Kowloon Wah Yan College, the other from St Peter & Paul's Parish, Yuen Long - for a visit to MercyHK's second hand shop in Temple Street and a sharing at the next door Dr Jesus Centre .... followed by a tour of the district which included visits to the rooms of some homeless people for whom MercyHK has provided accommodation at the Alhambra Building in YMT. Finally I joined the usual Sunday night prison group at the Dr Jesus Centre for their gathering ... at which we farewelled Deva who is due to return to Malaysia tomorrow after being acquitted by a High Court jury.

Judges 3: Some of the Israelites forgot the Lord their God and worshipped false gods. As a result, they were enslaved by the king of Edom for 8 years. They cried to God for help and God raised up Othniel, a nephew of Caleb, to lead and rescue them. Then the land enjoyed peace for 40 years. But when Othniel died, the Israelites again began to do what displeases the Lord, and were again enslaved, this time by Eglon king of Moab, for 18 years. Once more they cried to the Lord for help and he raised up Ehud, a left-hander. As Ehud presented tribute to Eglon, he said to Eglon: "I have a secret message for you". When they were alone, Eglon thought he was safe,
because Ehud's knife was on his right thigh. Ehud then used his left-hand to grab the knife unexpectedly and killed Eglon.Ehud escaped from the king's quarters before the king's attendants knew Eglon was dead. Ehud then roused the Israelites to fight and defeat the Moabites, after which the land enjoyed peace for 80 years

Lord, please raise up good leaders in every country

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

1 Corinthians 15.1-8: Let me remind you of the basic facts of the Good News: Christ died for our sins. He was buried. He was raised to life on the third day. He appeared to Peter, then to the other apostles, then to more than 500 of the believers - most of whom are still alive. Then he appeared to James and the other disciples. Last of all he appeared to me. I was like an unexpected child
Jesus, I have not yet seen you, but I believe in you and I love you

John 13.37-14.6: At the meal, Peter said to Jesus "I will lay down my life for you". Jesus replied "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times. c.f. readings for Christ the King

Daniel 7:
Once when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair as pure as wool. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. Then coming on the clouds of heaven was one like a son of man. On him was conferred  glory and kingship, and people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man" whose kingship is eternal

My recording of this reading

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Recording

Revelation 1: From John, to the seven churches of Asia province: grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come, from the seven spirits at his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the First-born from the dead, the Ruler of the kings of the earth.
Jesus, faithful witness, please help me to be a faithful witness to your love and truth

 Recording

John 18.33-37: "Are you the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked. Jesus replied, "Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others spoken to you about me?" Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?" Jesus replied, "Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this kind." "So you are a king then?" said Pilate. "It is you who say it" answered Jesus. "Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice."
Jesus, please help me bear witness to the truth

and I promise to try to live as a good Christian.
Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer you all my actions
that all hearts may recognize your love and know the peace of your kingdom

Judges 1-2: After the death of Joshua, the Israelites continued their campaign to occupy all parts of the land of Canaan. But as time went on, the Israelites began to forget the Lord their God. As a result, things went wrong for the Israelites. To help them, the Lord appointed judges to lead them. For a while the people followed the judges. But as soon as a judge died, the people again lapsed into idolatry.
Dear God, please don't let me forget you. Please help me pray to you and love you every day.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

1 Corinthians 13.1-13: If I am the most brilliant speaker, but don't have love, I am just a gong booming. If I understand all mysteries, and if I have a faith that will move mountains, but don't have love, I am nothing. Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous, never boastful, never conceited, never rude or selfish. Love does not take offence. It's not resentful. Love delights in the truth. Love is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. Love is virtue Number One, greater than faith or hope
Jesus, please help me love like you

John 13.34-35: Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples".
Jesus, please help all Christians to love one another as you have loved us

Joshua 23-24: As Joshua neared the end of his life, he urged the Israelites to stay faithful to the Lord while living with many foreign neighbours: "Continue to observe everything written by Moses. Do not mingle with the foreign peoples still among you. Do not utter the names of their gods. Stay loyal to the Lord your God. Love the Lord your God. If you stay faithful, the Lord will bless you. If you are unfaithful, everything will go wrong for you. Choose today whom you will serve:
the Lord our God, or false gods. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Dear Lord, may Joshua's dying words be true for me: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord"

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor

Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

1 Corinthians 12.12-30: A human body is made of many parts: arms, legs, muscles, eyes etc. Every part is important and needed for the body to be healthy. The church is like a body. We are the body's members. Some of us are apostles, some prophets, some teachers etc. The members of the church must care about every member of the church. Everyone is important. The spiritual health of each member affects the health of the whole body
Jesus, help me understand how your church is like a human body

John 13.21-30: Jesus became visibly upset and said to his disciples at the meal "One of you is going to betray me. It is the one to whom I give a piece of bread  that I have dipped in the dish". He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot. Immediately, Satan entered Judas. Jesus said to Judas "What you are going to do, do quickly". Judas left the meal. Night had fallen

Joshua 22The campaign to subdue the whole land had taken a long time. Joshua especially thanked the tribes from across the Jordan
for their help. These tribes - Reuben, Gad and Manasseh - had been given land on the Eastern side of the Jordan, but still helped in the campaign to control the Western side. Joshua said to them: "Despite the fact that the campaign has lasted so long, you have loyally helped your brothers. Keep on loving the Lord your God, following his paths. Be loyal to him and serve him with all your heart."

Dear Lord, please help me to be loyal - to you, to my family and to my country

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.

John 13.1-15: While Jesus and his disciples were eating a meal just before the Passover, Jesus got up from the table, removed his outer clothing,  and wrapped a  towel around his waist as an apron. He then poured water into a basin, and like a slave, began to wash the disciples' feet,  wiping them with the towel he was wearing. After washing their feet he said to them "You are right in calling me Master and Lord. If I, then, the Lord and Master, have humbly served you, you should humbly serve one another. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done for you"
Jesus, please help us to serve other people humbly, just as you humbly served the disciples

Joshua 11-21: Some kings in the north combined to fight the Israelites. But the Lord delivered them into the power of Israel. Eventually the whole country had rest from war, and the land was divided up among the 11 tribes. So it was that the Lord gave the Israelites all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors. They took possession of it and settled there. The Lord granted them peace on all their frontiers just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Of all the promises that the Lord had made to the House of Israel, not one failed. All were fulfilled.
Dear Lord, please give peace to nations troubled by war

My recording of this reading

Psalm 94: O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. The Lord gives them peace in troubled times. When cares increase in my heart, God's consolation calms my soul.
Lord, when cares and troubles increase, please help us to trust in you.

Listen

1 Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning the Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you: On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said "This is my body which will be broken for you". After supper he took a cup and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink it in memory of me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord.
Jesus, help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

Listen

John 12.42-46: Many people believed in Jesus, even some important people, but they did not admit it, through fear of being expelled from the prayer hall. They put honor from people before the honor that comes from God. Jesus said openly "I, the light, have come into the world, so that whoever believes in me, need not stay in the dark any more".
Jesus, true Light of the world, please help me put honor from you before honor from people
