Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Samuel 13-15: Not long after he became king, Saul began doing things that caused Samuel to stop supporting him. Samuel clearly told Saul what the Lord wanted Saul to do, but Saul insisted on doing things his own way. Saul seemed more concerned about his own popularity than about being obedient to the Lord. This displeased the Lord,  and he rejected Saul.
Dear God, please help us not to disobey you. "Your will be done"
My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Ephesians 1.9-13: God the Father has let us know his sacred plan: the whole show, everything in heaven and everything in earth, is one big orchestra with Christ as the conductor. We Jews are special instruments in the orchestra. We were chosen to put our hope in Christ before he came. And you non-Jews are also on the stage, now that you have believed the truth of the Good News. All of us have been stamped with the Holy Spirit. He's the composer whose music we are playing
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thank you for the gift of life and the gift of faith. Help me play well!

Listen

Matthew 4.1-11: After he was baptized, Jesus spent about 40 days praying and fasting in the desert. During this time, he was tempted by Satan. "If you are the Son of God, change some stones into bread" said Satan. Jesus replied "Human life needs more than bread. Life needs God's message". Satan then took Jesus to a high place and said "Throw yourself down, since the angels will protect you". Jesus replied "Presumption is a sin". Then Satan  took Jesus to a high mountain and showed him all the nations of the world. "Worship me and I will give you all these nations" said Satan. Jesus replied "Go away, Satan! Only God is to be worshipped". The devil then went away.
Jesus, please protect us from Satan and from evil

1 Samuel 12: As the elderly Samuel handed over leadership to Saul, he said to all the people: "In future it is the king who will lead you. The Lord is my witness that I have never treated you unjustly. You must follow the Lord with all your heart. Do not turn your back on the Lord's way. Do not follow false ways."
Dear God, thank you for the life of Samuel. Please help all people to follow your way, not follow false ways

Ephesians 1.1-7From Paul, appointed to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Before the world was made, he chose us in Christ, to live through love in his presence. He chose us, in Christ, to be his adopted children, to make us praise the glory of his grace. This grace is his free gift to us in his Beloved Son, through whose blood we gain our freedom and the forgiveness of our sins
Father, thank you for upgrading me from human child to Divine Child!

Matthew 3.1-17: About 30 years after Jesus was born, a man began preaching repentance, and baptizing people in the river Jordan. This man was John the Baptist. His message was "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand". John fulfilled the prophecy: "A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord". John said "I baptize you with water, but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit". Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said "This is my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on him"
Jesus, please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

c.f. readings for Feast of the Epiphany

Isaiah 59-60: Arise, shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the rest of the world is still in darkness. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. People from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord. No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your days of mourning will be ended.
Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Ephesians 3.2-6: You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations;  it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Jesus Christ, through the gospel

Matthew 2.1-12: Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, during the reign of King Herod. Some months after Jesus' birth, several  wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. They said "Where is the infant king of the Jews?  We saw his star as it rose and we have come to offer him honor." King Herod felt threatened by this news. He knew from the Scriptures that the promised Saviour would be born in Bethlehem. So Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending that he too would like to offer honor to the child. The wise men headed for Bethlehem, guided by the star. The star filled them with joy. The star stopped over the place where the child was. The wise men fell to their knees and honored the child. They offered him gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. Then they returned to their own country by a different way, having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.
Jesus, help me to honor you like the wise men

c.f. Readings for January 1, Feast of Mary, Mother of God

Numbers 6: God said to Moses and Aaron: "This is how you are to bless the people. Say to them:
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord let his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord uncover his face to you and bring you peace."

Dear God, please bless everyone in the world

My recording of this reading

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.
May all the peoples of the earth know you  and praise you, O God

Recording

Galatians 4.4-6: When the appointed time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law, and to enable us to be adopted as children of God, brothers and sisters of his Son. The proof that we are children is that God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts: the Spirit that cries "Abba, Father"

1 Samuel 11: The people of Jabesh-gilead told Saul that the Ammonites were threatening them. The spirit of the Lord stirred up Saul and he led the Israelites to a great victory over the Ammonites. Samuel and all the people then went to Gilgal where Saul was again proclaimed king.
Dear Lord, may your Spirit stir us up to do good things
My recording of this reading

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Galatians 6.14-18: As for me, the only thing I boast about is the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not. What matters is that we become a new creature. From now on, I want no more trouble from you. The scars on my body were suffered for the sake of Jesus. May his grace be with you
Jesus, may I look at everything in the world from up on your Cross

John 1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God

1 Samuel 9-10: Among the men of the tribe of Benjamin there was a very tall and very handsome man named Saul. Once when he went in search of his father's stray donkeys, he met up with Samuel. The Lord had told Samuel that he would meet Saul, and that he should be anointed as king. And so Samuel took some oil and poured it on Saul's head. He told Saul that the Lord had chosen him to be king. Samuel presented Saul to the people. The people acclaimed Saul saying "Long live the king!"

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Luke 2.9-14: Not far from where Mary had her baby, there were shepherds who lived in the fields and took it in turns to watch their sheep during the night. An angel appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them. The angel said "Do not be afraid.  I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by everyone. Today in the town of David, a savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. Look for a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger". Suddenly with the angel there were many other angels, praising God and singing "Glory to God in heaven, and peace to people on earth".

Yesterday morning Simon (MercyHK's social assistant) and I spent time with a group of drug addicts, trying to arrange a system whereby they can collect a free meal each day .... especially in this cold weather. For a second group of addicts, nearly all from Nepal, we already have a program in place whereby they collect a free rice box & soup each day from a local canteen. Two days ago 57 people made such collections.

Samuel 8: When Samuel grew old, the people asked him to find someone to be their king. Samuel was not happy that the people asked for a king. Samuel also warned the people that a king would impose taxes and have many rights over them. But the people insisted on having a king. The Lord then told Samuel to give the people a king
Dear God, you are our only true King

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

Galatians 5.19-26: When self-indulgence is at work, the results are obvious: sexual irresponsibility, sorcery, feuds and wrangling, jealousy and drunkenness. What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, truthfulness, gentleness and self-control. You cannot belong to Christ Jesus unless you crucify all self-indulgent desires. Let us be directed by the Spirit. We must stop being conceited, provocative and envious
Holy Spirit,  increase your influence in my life

Luke 2.1-8: The Emperor of Rome ordered that a census be taken of the whole Empire. Every man  had to go to his home town to be registered. So Joseph set out from Nazareth in Galilee and traveled to Judea, to the town of David called Bethlehem, with his pregnant wife Mary. While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have her child. She gave birth to a son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a feeding box for animals, because there was no room for them at the local inn
